From February 1980, Glen Campbell sings Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier" & Jimmy Webb's "Highwayman", and has a VERY lively discussion with Moiv!
Where did the time go, Mr. Campbell? We miss you and your wonderful talent. You left your footprint in time with all your wonderful songs and playing guitar.

Glen actually sang Universal Soldier on Shindig back in '65 (find it on YT). I posted it to my f/b page and NO ONE acknowledged it. That song stood in the 60s, in the 80s and particularly now, since 91. He did get around to recording Highwayman until much later than this.

“War is no longer made by simply analyzed economic forces if it ever was. War is made or planned now by individual men, demagogues and dictators who play on the patriotism of their people to mislead them into a belief in the great fallacy of war when all their vaunted reforms have failed to satisfy the people they misrule.” - Ernest Hemingway

he sounds better in the 1980s than in the 1960s. this guy really is a great singer - great vocal quality, great interpretation, just the right amount of expression - kills Donovan, etc etc etc.

As a Canadian I suppose I should like the composer Buffy St Marie's version the best but I prefer Glen's version and always have and yes I am old enough to remember when it first came out in '65.....Glen became my favourite singer as soon as I heard him and all these years later, I've not changed my mind...One of the best in the business and always in my heart. We lost him 6 years ago yesterday. RIP Glen and thanks for all the happy years.

I prefer the finger picking guitar version of this song, but Glen sings very well here. He started out as a session guitarist, turned out he had a great voice too. What a talented guy!

I've heard Glen liked the song so much but Capitol Records wouldn’t give the go ahead for recording. (Supposedly Glen left Capitol partly over this). About twenty years later Glen mentioned this song to Johnny Cash. That’s when it became a hit. Glen once described Jimmy Webb as a great musical poet.

I actually think he's trying to make a valid and thoughtful point but, sadly, doesn't express it very well and the interviewer doesn't exactly help him out. Probably wondering what he's going to say next.

Rick Shefchik ... My husband plays an Ovation and many of our friends. Steve Wariner endorsed Ovation for years and still plays them. Ovations have a great sound in the hands of one who knows , but that bulky back never worked for me.

It is an Adamas, with a carbon fiber top. Top was thinner than a regular spruce top, allowing it to respond to the strings with greater vibration. Both louder and, yet, responded to finger picking well.

Truly an ignorant and hateful song, "Universal Soldier" blames the young men who are ordered to fight under threat of court-martial and firing squad, it's really the citizens who elect the politicians who start the wars, Glen should have known better.
