Protection must therefore be found from all concentrations of power, be they individuals, companies or the state itself. The only way to obtain this is to actively break up private power that grows beyond a certain scale (anti-trust legislation, progressive taxation etc) AND federally devolve govt power in the hands of communities, placing important economic decisions of a township or region more directly in control of its citizens.

The anarchy advocated by Chomsky is in essence a walk in this direction, there is not a single drop of authoritarianism in his works. His entire political edifice is there to explain how regardless of ideology and rhetoric, concentrated power in all its forms (political, military, economic) ALWAYS results in totalitarianism. As far as facts go, check him out, I have never been able to catch him lying or misquoting, and I have tried.

I'm not sure this is what he's saying. Rather he's saying that the U.S. are founded on the principle that decisions have to be taken by rich people (that is: economic power), and that the whole political system in built to preserve that condition, and to prevent people from partecipating in political life. Which is basically the opposite of what 'democracy' should be.

The only way that they can, "prevent competition from eroding the power they have" is through the State. All monopolies are backed up through the State. Something like smog from a factory would be the pervue of government, because the smog intrudes upon the lungs of others. Unless someone is doing something which causes direct physical harm to another person, then I don't believe it's morally right to use force against that person. You may disagree, fine, we'll just have to agree to disagree.

I do see logical inconsistencies, because the very existence of a State implies taxation and statal functions that interfere with a "free market". Weak state, strong state, no state, all state, the free market is fucked anyway. Might as well start working on how to regulate the market to correct its externalities and help communities take charge of their economic life. Since it can never really be "free" let's all decide how we want to steer it instead of having corps do it covertly.

Ideally I would agree with you, but like I said, in the real world, with completely unregulated free market the main focus of players who have made it to the top is to cheat the market to find ways to prevent competition from eroding the power that they have obtained. So if you don't have a "referee" that keeps the players in check how do you prevent the system from being fucked with? The problem is not JUST state interference, but that anyone that grows "too big" will try to interfere.

The State does have a role in a Free Market. Capitalism is about Voluntary Trade. If anyone tries to use force to take something, then the State must get involved because that is theft. I don't really see any logical inconsistency here, but perhaps you do.

Monopolies are easily backed by force when a state isn't there to curtail it. The truth of the matter is violence is "an offer you can't refuse" and concentrated power everywhere has never had problems using it. One could even go as far as saying that in international affairs might makes right because there is no real international law to curtail its use (and the US profit immensely from this fact). But even the state will always fail unless it is truly accountable and democratic.

Simple, the community decides. In Italy the govt along with EU and private sector pressure wanted to punch holes into mountains rich in radioactive compounds to allow a high speed rail through. Well it was all good and dandy for the aforementioned parties, but the community was not thrilled about being showered with radioactive dust, formed local committees and fought teeth and nail. Who else should decide?
@DonVoghano

Money is power, the wealthy use that power to influence govt representatives who in turn pass legislation to protect and subsidize those wealthy. An entire system is created to multiply investor money regardless of economic performance. This is how too big to fail happens, this is how bailouts happen, this has nothing to do with the free market. But where there is no govt to corrupt the powerful simply rule by direct application of force (as they did through most of history).

You have just proved my point, Monopolies are backed through force, not Voluntary Trade. If a Corporation used force to make someone buy their product, or work for them, then the State does have a right to get involved because that would be theft. Even an Anarcho-Capitalist would say that if a business tried to make you buy their product through force, you'd have a right to blow their head off!

That is incorrect. Without a law keeper you simply revert to a feudal system, like we have had through 99% of human history. It's a very small step going from monetary to military power, a step that is regularly taken by mafias and even some corporations nowadays. Current deregulation, ideologically motivated, simply got us closer to a feudal system all over again, with an increase in concentration of power and violence.
