The teeth on the back were designed for foraging roots, making small notches and what not, not really for sawing through wood, as you would just be better off batoning through instead. There is definitely lots of fakes all over the internet. I’ve seen tests where they jab them into a tree and stand on them bouncing around without snapping. I believe they are made of spring steel with a 53-54 hardness if I recall correctly. It’s still essentially a bayonet.

Teeth on saws usually are bent out a little bit. This is called set. The overall width is called kerf, how wide your cut is going to be. With something like this, you actually wouldn't want any set, because it would negatively effect slicing, you would get hang ups on the saw teeth. Not something you really want on a knife, specially one this tall (edge to spine.) It could be improved by giving the blade a grind where the metal behind the saw teeth taper towards the edge everso slightly (doesnt need to be much), that should allow you to saw more effectively. However, these teeth were made for cutting tree roots if I'm not mistaken, so that's why they're not so good for cutting branches.

Had the was it FM78 or whatever the older variant without the saw edge was during my time in the military, it was good for throwing into trees when bored and cooking, that's about it. Couldn't hold an edge worth shit, instantly went dull the moment you cut anything tougher than tissue, even MRE packs could prove difficult for it and you'd end up ripping them open instead of cleanly cutting them open. Now I've thrown it into a tree stump on my lot and it's been sticking up from the stump for a good couple of years now, makes an okay lawn ornament I guess, but it's still a shitty knife. And before you start going on about how it's a bayonet and not a knife, why is it called a "field knife" then? The russians did bayonets that doubled as a good knife, so did the americans.

@@calculatedsurvival Hey, the backside works good enough to cut fresh roots, or to produce wood chips to start a campfire. The steel is produced by the company Böhler. The technical description is called SAE1095 and it has a 55 HRC ( Rockwell ) . I looked at Wikipedia and they write that the Army will get it without a serrated backside, so I was wrong but I heard it a lot of times that the serrated backside is made to tear wounds. I work in a outdoor store and we have a lot of soldiers buy from us. When you join the Austrian Army as a newbie you get the knife unsharpened ( maybe they drink to much beer and they wanna avoid accidental injuries I guess 🤭) the knife is official used by the Luxembourg Palace guard, the Dansk Army Force, the German GSG 9 anti terrorist unit, the national guard of India, that Police of Malaysia, the polish milltary police, the Chinese Army and th south Korea special mission battalion so as Chuck Norris ( Joke ) and a lot of outdoor people.
