This is awesome! This is what brought me back to the church. Marty Haugen's mass of creation gloria will always be my favorite.

As a former organist for Catholic and Episcopalian services, I must commend the congregation's singing! We can only hope and wish we had singing like that which is exhibited here. It is especially hard to sing with a pipe organ because of the delay involved when the note is played and when the people actually hear it--in this case, it is flawless! Thanks for posting.

You are very lucky indeed. In most English-speaking areas, Catholic congregations are notorious for not singing. There is even a book by Fr. Thomas Day called "Why Catholics can't sing." This is especially sad since the Catholic church has such a rich varierty of liturgical music but I am glad you have had a positive experience.

I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Tonight (March 7), we opened with a hymn that MH took from 3rd Century Greek and composed. The hymn is Joyous Light of Heavenly Glory. The tune is JOYOUS LIGHT. It is #561 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.

This may be my favorite Gloria out of all the mass settings I have heard, though the one from Mass of Light is a close second. My grammar school used the mass of creation setting, but we never used the Gloria. We didn't even say it, much less sing it. The few times I visited that church for Sunday mass, they still didn't use the Gloria. In fact, I don't think I ever went to mass in that archdiocese where they used it until the archbishop retired and replaced by a more conservative one.

My church has been doing the Mass of Creation for as long as I can remember. They started using before I was born, and that was 1994 so, it isn't new for all churches.

wonderful performance! although I have a strong musical background and appreciate Marty Haugen, I haven't served as a church musician for ages and I came over here because the church where I'll be guest organist day after tomorrow is using this Gloria that's new to me, but apparently not to lots of other, and I wanted to see how other people interpreted it. Nice organ and grand playing, too, thanks!

Because the more modern 3rd edition is now more popular probably due to more literal translations that are supposed to indicate the actual meaning of what is written in Latin in such a book.
@tylerstern3388
9 ай бұрын
Theres a revised edition but it is harder to sing since people remember the old version and dont try to change to the new then it sounds like garbage with people singing different lyrics and tunes.... priest and people complain to choir and organist etc. Not everywhere but where i reside that was the deciding factor.
@GabbyJSMusic
9 ай бұрын
Yes it is because the liturgy itself changed to a different translation in 2010, and priests and musicians are not allowed to change the official text of things like the Gloria, psalm, Sanctus, etc. So Mass of Creation was revised in 2010 and that's the version you will most likely hear in churches nowadays
@tylerstern3388

@@GabbyJSMusic Correct. Although theres a certain exception in the roman missal: Repetition of verses or certain phrases of songs is okay. (Example of this is why Heritage mass gloria doesnt repeat the refrain but many versions of the gloria do. Also in the lamb of god Mass of Joy and Peace repeats "the world") . But it must be approved prior to use by the USCCB (if i remember correctly).

I am part of the Co-Cathedral of the Scared Heart in Houston Tx. Daniel Cardinal Dinardo Is the Cardinal of out Arch Diocese and When he celebrates Mass the Gloria and Santus and Great Amen are took under much lower tempo Because he savors the Mass and the songs and the Liturgy of the Mass which allows the people to sing and be part of the Mass with out Hurry. I think that would help because that would make it sound in less of a hurry and more of a Mass.

Thanks for the info. How lucky your church is to have such an obviously talented and gifted organist - I have listened to many in the south Wales Swansea area and no-one as far as I can tell come up to Mr. Bell's playing standard. Others just play loudly with no feeling and obvious mistakes in choice of stops required. Please tell Mr Bell he has a new fan!

There are English-speaking Catholic congregations where the congregation doesn't sing (at least half heartedly?) I have never been to one! My former home parishes (Epiphany of the Lord, Katy, TX; student congregations at LSU and the University of Tulsa, and Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa, OK) all sang with gusto. Often out of tune, because the Mass of Light setting is difficult and in E Major, but with gusto. Get your congregations to sing glory, praise and grief!!! It's the joy of worship.

The organ is magnificent. The unpredictable, too-high Gloria that is the epitome of how *not* to write something that a congregation must sing every week of their lives, is not.

In some ways yes. Things that are new, the Anglican church, new being a few hundred years, will have a higher attendance, as you can see with American evangelicals. The Church is 2 Thousand years old, and the Fathers did not even try revamping it unitl 1,961 years in to its venture from when Christ gave Peter his mission to build his Church. As with a new things people will always be attentive. I live in Houston and we have no problems filling our Cathedral's and Churches with people.

My favourite liturgical music of all. Too bad I don't hear this anymore, as all the Parishes around here have gone over to new Mass settings, none of which I like. Overdone? Overplayed? You must be kidding! By those standards, we should dump the Our Father because it's "overdone". Anyhow this performance is lovely and brings back fond memories.
