Broderick has stated this is his favorite role, and he clearly poured his heart and soul into it. He thought it would be his breakthrough into more adult roles, but he really was never able to shake his teen movie status. At the time of its release, a lot of critics praised this movie but had difficulty accepting "Ferris Bueller" as a Civil War officer. Broderick has had a successful career: some real triumphs on Broadway and some very good films, but when he dies it will be: "Matthew Broderick known best for "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

Also, part of my point was the improbability of the situation given the time period. During the Civil War period, baroque music had experienced almost nothing yet of the revival it enjoys now. In other words, listening to baroque music in the 1860s would've been considered much more unusual than it is now. They're clearly emphasizing that this particular general is very eccentric. There is a massive bronze relief sculpture in Washington, DC, at the Smithsonian that...it is remarkable. The 54th is so...uniquely represented..and the likeness of Colonel Shaw and Matthew Broderick is UNCANNY, though done decades before. Colonel Shaw was thrown into a trench with his "colored" soldiers, but when g8ven the opportunity to have his remains returned to Boston, his mother said, "He died with his men." Well, we know where he got his mettle from. Years later, he was disinterred and buried on a family plot. God bless the memory of the 54th Massachusetts and an honorable man named Robert Gould Shaw, who gave them honor...and Glory. If you've not seen the frieze, you should. They took a lot of liberties with the history, actually. They left out Sergeant Major Lewis Douglass, son of Frederick Douglass, for one, and replaced him with Morgan Freeman's made-up character. They also left out the bit about how they heavily recruited intellectuals and professionals (like "Thomas"), and specifically excluded escaped slaves (like "Trip"), because they didn't want the regiment to underperform. The regiment's role in the first battle was exaggerated in the movie. And they omitted the misery that occurred in the 2 days before the battle of Fort Wagner...2 days of travel in a downpour without sleep, so that they arrived hungry, sleepy, and totally worn out before the battle even started. Still one of my favorite movies, but you have to look at it as "inspired by real events" rather than as a docu-drama.

I guarantee you they know nothing of The 54th or anything of U.S. History for that matter. Products of the U.S. public school system. There was some disgusting behavior on the other side of Boston Common from where the 54th statue is, i.e., smashing store windows on Newbury Street and looting high-end stores. The security images of these people engaged in the looting (if you look it up online) will have you shaking your head. This behavior had nothing at all to do with George Floyd. Shaw came from a wealthy family in boston. I doubt his parents would have just rolled over if this happened. “Its not what you know, but who know”

In real life Major general David hunter was the commanding officer not harker. Not sure why the movie portrays this, as it is pretty historically accurate. otherwise

The movie Glory is not accurate yes it's true about the 54th that is real regiment commanding officers real but they do not offer command to Robert Gould Shaw at his parents home in Massachusetts they offered him the command three times at the field Hospital they should we do this movie and get it right the first time they offered the command of the 54th to Captain Robert Gould Shaw he turned it down and he actually said the n-word that's right go to the Library of Congress and you'll see I'm telling you the truth go to the Library of Congress and they will tell you they offered him the command at the field Hospital not his parents home in Massachusetts

This scene touched on the absolute robbery, rape, and pillage that the South endured under Union Occupation that did not end in 1865. It Continued well into the 1870s with what became known as the Reconstruction period. And the South was plunged into a 100-year great depression because of it.

Considering all the bullshit the South has put this country through before, during, and after the Civil War, i'd say the Union didn't go far enough, we never should have stopped Reconstruction.

@@DaHuntsman1 Reconstruction never stopped, it continued will into the 20th century. Only in the last 30 years has the South turned the corner and now the Economies in the Southern States particularly in Texas, Florida, and Georgia are booming. The Same cannot be said for the Northern states that keep electing democrat enslavers. They locked down the entire North for more than a year for political advantage which crushed the working class in the North. The Same enslavers who kept the Black Americans in bondage for more than 200 years. The North is going to reap what it sowed. Northern cities are full of Crime, Homelessness and despair. Their political leaders as no better than the democrat segregationist before them. The New Southern Confederacy will be comprised of all Americans as we join together to defeat and put down the White Democrat Liberal enslavers once and for all.

The South behaved exactly the same during its incursions into the North. You don't hear about it as much because they were less successful. But you can look up the ransom of Frederick MD and the sack of Chambersburg PA if you want to read about some of these episodes. If you want to see a scene where it is portrayed in a famous movie, review the scene fairly early in "Gettysburg" where Lee's aide tells him that the lovely breakfast comes "courtesy of the good citizens of Pennsylvania".

The south continues to vote conservative Dixiecrats prior to the 1990s and republicans since. 160 years of voting the same what do you expect to change?
