This is the setting of the Magnificat written by Herbert Howells as part of the Gloucester Service which was commissioned by Gloucester Cathedral, England.
This is one of my favourite Howells Evensong settings. It is an incredible, total experience to sing Decani soprano in such a work. Alas, I am now retired and disabled so can no longer get to Rochester Cathedral to sing all the wonderful music there. I was in the voluntary choir, with all its different names and revisions , since 1984. All good things come to an end. I can still enjoy listening to Church music of all the great composers. I met Howells quite often when I attended the Royal College of Music in London (1964). He was an elegant little man (a bit like an English Ravel) and I am sorry now that I didn't realise the value of his music.

Judging by the timing, this is from a recording by The Collegiate Singers, directed by Andrew Millinger, "Herbert Howells: Complete Morning and Evening Services, Vol 2" released in 1997.

I love Howells' music so much. He is, to me, the "mac Daddy" of anglican choral music. One of the biggest shames in this world is how relatively little known Howells is (my own composition teacher didn't even know who Howells is!) I especially love the irony of Howells' father playing in the Gloucester cathedral and Herbert practically growing up there as a child. He had an intimate relationship with the hall, to say the least.

Salvatore LoCascio I couldn’t agree more - I adore Howells’s Anglican Choral and organ music. He is the pinnacle of the Anglican Choral tradition for my money.

when I was at Bristol Cathedral the boys refused to sing it, or they sang it so badly on purpose we couldn't do it... little terrors!

Choir sounds like a girls choir - not boys. Just a guess. Does Gloucester have girls? Or maybe a group like Selwyn College Cambridge Choir . . .

Prince of parody. Please be respectful to the sacred message of this posting. I agree with mibi1946 there are so many adjectives to describe this masterpiece than the one which you chose. I don't claim to have the cleanest mouth when I converse, but for the sake of respect and utmost regard for the message in this music, please refrain in this venue. I know its easy because we all hide behind our screenname which very few people actually know.

Why are organist always appointed choirmasters? Why not appoint a true choral expert? And most organist and so called choral experts these day, don't know how to correctly train boys and girls how to sing correctly; lowered relaxed jaw, throat and Adam's apple.

I think perhaps it has to do with the fact that most Anglican congregations are underwater financially, and have to find someone who can fill both positions. An organist who can conduct is certainly more useful than a choirmaster who (usually) can't play the organ.

Many cathedral and collegiate choirs now employ a singing teacher who works with the choristers individually. This seems more effective than leaving it to the conductor to teach technique.

Organists are probably some of the finest musicians who essentially manage an orchestra with two hands and two feet. Trained in the church and often choristers ahead of organ study they understand the context and the requirements. Making music in the church is also a calling. Having someone coming in to conduct choirs without a background in the church or an understanding of the organ and choral tradition is a disaster waiting to happen.
