But i think they're the best gloves for hema

Skallagrim, that material sparring gloves are made of is rubber kind of thing that is used for shoe outsoles (which is called styroguma in polish - not sure about translation though). Basically you could get them in most of the stores with shoemaker supplies and make those gauntlets on your own for just fraction of the price. The wrist is made out of cordura nylon and plastic plates sewn inside. Also, the wrist is not really much of a weakspot if you bunch the glove up a bit, so the plates overlap. It doesnt inhibit the movement much and definitely increases protection.

We use Red Dragon gloves a lot at EHMS, that is the HEMA club in Espoo, Finland. The y are our go-ro gloves for one-handed sword use, because they allow so much more flexibility, and a smaller blade doesn't require as much protection. However, if you are using a longsword or other two-handed swords, you can only use these for light sparring. Other remarks: really cheap, but will not last as long as other gloves (but that's not a huge issue, because of the said price), quite flexible, do not hinder movement as much as many other gloves. So, very much like the lacrosse gloves, but way better protection; still, do NOT use with two-handed swords.

Me and my brother use Red Dragon ones. They are like lacrosse gloves yes, but they have overlapping plates on the fingers. They are good for a beginner but you can't do too much with the blade, as they are somewhat bulky and limit how well you can actually move your hand. They are also smaller than other gloves in that they don't extend past the wrist, leaving the forearm exposed.

I've been using the Gdansk / Hoof sparring gloves for almost a year now, practicing HEMA (Fiore style) and I have to agree on everything, just be aware new buyers that sometimes factory won't do a perfect cut between the fingers and a little bump of rubber will be on excess, you can easily cut it with a normal cutter or knife. They are quite confortable once you bend them a little with normal use, also I recommend using any kind of light glove inside the sparring gloves to avoid bruises and sore skin caused by friction. something Skall doesn't mention is that the wrist actually has light laminated pads in the wrist, like rings. It does offer very light protection, but if you get a hit in there you are going to feel it.

When I was into 14-15th century reenactment the most common hand protection used were padded mittens stuffed with tow or horse hair and chainmail overlay. Those were used both with synthetic and dull metall swords and I can't remember anyone getting real injury using those during my 2 years of training. Pretty heavy as you'd expect, but I ones hit a pal in the groin with a lucky throw - he was down on the floor for a couple of minutes =) And so was I, laughing...

@DaveLillethun

I own the SPES heavies and I'm a fan of them for their superior protection. The thumb tips can be a bit vulnerable, though, and I've seen someone get a bad thumb injury while wearing these. I bought the separate fingertip protectors (they fit on the fingers inside the glove) and I just use the two thumbs (the SPES heavy already protects the other fingers well enough). So if you're looking for the best protection at a reasonable price, I think this is the way to go, but be sure to get the added protection for your thumbs. Now I will say that you lose some mobility in exchange for the protection. It's a little challenging to do anything other than a hammer grip with these. Putting your thumb on the blade isn't too difficult, but it is slightly harder than if you had bare hands. The grip on them doesn't open as wide as I'd like, which makes it a little slower to let go with my left hand in order to grapple, and grabbing an opponent's sword, arm, or whatever is notable more difficult with these gloves. That said, I don't think you can currently do better without sacrificing protection (although I haven't seen in person what the Konig glove can do yet, and we don't know what the Pro Gauntlet will offer yet either - however these two also come at a higher price tag). On the other hand, if you want to get into practicing HEMA and are on a very tight budget (i.e., can't afford even the SPES heavies), then lacrosse gloves are a reasonable better-than-nothing alternatives. I would only spar with synthetic weapons in that case though. I think a feder or other steel trainer could too easily cause significant injury through lacrosse gloves. (Plus we're talking about a budget, and synthetics are also less expensive than steel.) You can get used lacrosse gloves for super cheap - I think I got mine for $15 (used) at Play It Again Sports.

Thanks Skallagrim. I've been trying to find the perfect gloves for years! I don't fight steel, though I've considered the articulated steel gauntlets. I do shinai, rapier with off hand, some cut & thrust. Seems like every other week I used to take a hard hit to whatever part of my hand was least protected. My best gloves so far have been shooters gloves like the type used in the military for heavy weapons (eBay used ~ 35.00 USD) and the Red Dragon HEMA sparring gloves. (new ~ 90.00 USD) I think you can get a general idea of pros and cons just looking at them. The Red Dragon are adapted from lacrosse gloves (I have a pair of the Brine also) but a little more flexible and less expensive that the comparable level of protection. I sell the Red Dragon on my eBay site so I may not be completely unbiased, but I think when you see the photos of my own pair you'll see how functional they are, more flexible than one might guess from the way they look. I am single male so I have to take these things seriously,

@CZProtton

None. The Gothic Armoury was closest to being accurate, but were still not good. HEMA gloves always* work better than historical gloves. We just have better materials, better manufacturing techniques and their gauntlets were made for war, ours are made for sparring. *there can be a shitty HEMA glove, but what I have seen or tried (SPES heavy, sparring gloves, Koning glove) were all better than historical gauntlets.

Also, it seems like your best option would be to take a bunch of small plates and sew/lace them onto those leather gloves. You likely NEED to tailor the gauntlet to your needs, so doing it yourself might be your best option.

My impression of red dragon gloves... great fit, comfortable, protective and so far my preferred glove for practice (emphasis on practice) in tournaments everyone fights a little harder because we all want to win, or at least not finish on the bottom. I have had a incident were a synthetic hit my finger right between two plates on the glove and really hurt (though thankfully didn't break) my hand. So I recommend these gloves very highly for the new guy starting out because of price, comfort and protectiveness. However don't fight the class monkey with them. I urge everyone wanting to do tournaments to get something more substantial. Lastly, if you're hardly with leather and sewing I would suggest using sinew to sew 3-4mm thick leather fingers over the top of the glove to stop cuts slipping between the protective plates. It looks ugly but it solves my only problem I have with the gloves. (I pretty good at getting injured in HEMA though not badly save bruised ribs and a broken finger from not motercycle gloves for dagger fighting instead of proper gloves and I'm the only person I know of who's had this issue with Red Dragon Gloves so I hope this is a fair and reasonable assessment of the product in question) Cheers guys.

Cheapest option that's most effective as far as protection goes, for me, has been boxing gloves. For $15, as a starter, very good protection, not so much flexibility. I could probably modify/cut the wrist part so that I have more of a movement range while still having the hand/finger protection. TLDR: boxing gloves from amazon work pretty well for starters

I've watched a lot of hema sparring videos now and one thing I noticed is that a lot of the newer trainees rely too much on their protective equipment. While necessary for tournament safety and for legal reasons, I have found that excessively protective equipment encourages sloppy footwork and fighting. When you are afraid of injury you are less likely to attack recklessly or leave your body lazily exposed. In the same regard, if you are worried about injuring your training partner you will hopefully be less likely to swing and thrust with wanton abandon. My friends and I have been sparring with only light gloves and black fencer wasters for a couple years now, and after just the first two or three days we almost never get hit in the hands and rarely do we exchange double hits. We also have never been seriously injured, despite moving quickly and striking with force. This may be due to my experience in unarmed martial arts, particularly in the school were I trained and now teach. We never used any form of protective anything, and we sparred and wrestled on all kinds of terrain, including hard wooden floors and asphalt. This sparring was hard and fast, with blows not pulled aside from those aimed toward the head (light contact was made, though only acknowledged if a forceful blow could have been made). When I introduced my friends to hema, I brought these concepts of acknowledging danger and respecting what great damage a training weapon can do. This has been very successful so far, granted, I choose my friends carefully and they are all patient and intelligent enough to comprehend the dangers of reckless fighting. I don't think this would work for most hema clubs and schools, but among small groups of trusted individuals I think it can be a useful tool to understanding how you would fight in a real, unarmored situation. Thank you for reading.

In Kendo we use gloves similiar as the Hood model gloves expect that there's no gap. They're basically from leather, but you really can't feel the hits or vibration from the hits, so you'd probably be okay with these kind of gloves for HEMA. I think?

Having used the sparringgloves and red dragon I'll add my experiences here: In my experience the biggest problem with the sparringgloves is that the rubberband tying the thumbpiece to the glove might break if i gets hit. Happened to me a few times and it sends the thumbpiece flying meaning your thumb is suddenly unprotected if your opponent doesn't notice and is doing a followup strike. Otherwise I like them a lot. The red dragon gloves simply offers to little protection for steel longsword sparring. Nylon might be ok or steel one handed swords if you are brave. They also seem to have some problem with quality as mine quite quily started fallig apart in the seams.

I think we need to improve on the whole Pommel throw thing. The fact is that while it is so obviously overpowered once thrown, it is balanced by the time you need to take to unscrew it. So, to make it more OP we must manage to make make a contraption that allows us to unscrew any type of pommel rapidly for quick use ! That or just going around with a bag of pommels for those with no honor.

My father made a pair of fairly good sparring gloves by taking some bikergloves with knuckle protection and adding some leather bands on it. And he used to spar with a steel sword and buckler. Funny yet painful story, once he forgot he wasn't holding the buckler, and a strike came, so he instinctly tried to block with the offhand, and his finger got bent backwards... So yeah, you don't need to pay a small fortune for specialized training gloves

Cons: Way oversimplified and all weapons go through armour too easily. Pros: Simple, internally consistent, adaptable to an impressive variety of weapons. Mount and Blade also does combat between large groups of people better than possibly any other game, which more than makes up for its shortcomings in the specifics of swordplay.

Pro gauntlets: See, here's my thing with those. Gauntlets will lots and lots of tiny plates to provide maximum articulation also provide less protection from blunt strikes. Same as chain. Being that they're doubtless going to be bought for HEMA longsword, they'll need some pretty decent blunt defense. You gotta have some trade off between protection and articulation. Look at those teeny plates; if you take a hard strike on one of those, how can you expect it to both articulate like it's not there and yet also diffuse the energy? I'd love someone like Skall with some experience inHEMA comment on that. I think the hoof gloves look like a pretty good trade off. Maybe some additional perimeter plates that must be trimmed to skip interference with the grip would be ideal.

Try Red Dragon HEMA gloves, they work really well.

Might sound like a silly idea but some football/soccer goalkeeping gloves come with padding along the fingers, ever thought about that?

Hey Skallagrim, have you ever tried Kote, the gauntlets that are used in Kendo?

I think the only way to get "perfect" gloves is to make them yourself. They may look crude but usally fit perfectly. Its not exactly rocket science too, but sewing machine is needed because of the material thickness.

Petition that gloves split between middle and ring be called "Spock gauntlets." Any takers? Either way, live long and prosper.
