Has the population number per generation remain the same since you originally got them? I think it would make sense if it lowered a little bit year after year, but i dunno

I had not really counted them for many years, but I think the numbers stayed more or less sameish. Just in recent years, there were two near population crashes. And when I tried to raise the number again, I was irritated than after successfully getting lots of adults, I got not that many eggs from them. That is why I am now counting and separating egg clutches...

So, I recorded this after work and had a few technical difficulties... The first take didn’t record properly, so this is actually the second time I went through the motions. I was trying a another setup for recording with two cameras and separate audio. Next time I’ll put the microphone elsewhere... Or maybe you did enjoy this enclosure and camera bonking type asmr or something?

What's your usual mortality rate? I just started out with my first clutches from wild adults this summer. And suddenly had one of them crash from 56 to 12. Wondering about the most likely causes. I'm not confident whether I'm feeding them the right amounts so maybe just underfeeding? 🤔 Do you have any knowledge of disease they can potentially get?

Most of the time, I kept the Sardinian glowworms, I did no or very little counting. And I do not have my old notebooks with me. But I would consider a slow loss up to 50 % not worrysome. I also had way worse and way better results. There were also two catastrophic crashes with near extinction of my breeding strain, that I have now since 2004... I suspect overcrowing and bad food (like wild snails that contain pesticides) to be the main culprits for such losses. Poor hygiene and high temperatures in summer may also be reasons. You seem to keep them in relatively small groups (i.e. clutchwise?), so I guess overcrowding is not the issue (also depending on the size of the rearing container, though). If you think underfeeding is the problem, you can just powerfeed them. Give them fresh food every day or so and remove old food also, untill they lose interest in food. Feeding them for a few days like this once a week should be more then enough. Back in the day, I simply kept small live prey permanently with the larvae, but now I think that may have cost me some specimens from being eaten by the prey when in molt... Are you keeping Lampyris, too? Or is it Nyctophila? Those two genera should do well with my methods. You have seen my main videos on rearing glowworms, right? I hope your glowworms will do well...

I found your comment from last summer... So it's Luciola lusitanica, right? I had success with a Luciola species and raised a very small number of eggs with zero losses to adulthood. Sadly, those were all male, so I could not continue...
