Following the announcement on 16/11 by the European Commission that it would reapprove glyphosate for another 10 years, PAN Europe and its members Générations Futures (France), Global2000 (Austria) and PAN Germany will ask the EU Court to cancel the reapproval. The 4 NGOs consider that EU pesticide law has not been respected, with regard to the protection of human health and the environment.
Last week, the European Commission announced its intention to renew glyphosate’s EU approval for another 10 years, despite lacking the full support of Member States. In reality, a significant body of scientific evidence indicates that glyphosate use may harm human health and the environment. Therefore, this renewal is incompatible with the EU pesticide law's mandate for high-level protection and the application of the precautionary principle in cases where harm has been identified but some uncertainties could remain.
This renewal of glyphosate has led PAN Europe, and its member organisations Génerations Futures (FR), Global 2000 (AT), PAN Germany and PAN Netherlands to challenge the decision in court.
This has been possible since 2021, when the EU legislation on the Aarhus regulation (2021/1767/EC) was amended , giving the possibility to civil society to challenge pesticide approvals at EU-level.
Our experts have consistently highlighted the different inconsistencies and shortcomings in the EU’s current assessment of glyphosate leading to erroneous conclusions about its safety. They indicate how the EU regulators, including ECHA and EFSA, have not implemented the EU law and have not followed the European and international guidelines.
We invite you to watch the press briefing hosted by civil society groups, where we announce our intention to legally contest the renewal of glyphosate before the EU Court, and highlight some of the major shortcomings of the EU assessment. This action demonstrates our commitment to upholding EU law, which aims to prioritise the protection of health and environment over private economic interests.
