In my opinion, any form of physical assault, even something as minor as a push, is far more serious than damaging objects, like in Hans Niemann's case. While broken objects can be repaired, a person might carry the impact of physical aggression much longer. Christopher Yoo's actions, regardless of their severity, should be viewed as more serious than Hans's outburst. If the incident involved physical assault, even if minor, I believe the next step should be more serious. Assault is a crime, and it could warrant legal action-maybe even an arrest, booking, and fingerprinting. This isn't just a violation of chess conduct; it's a matter of basic human respect and safety.

The thing I like most about Eric is that he is able to think about this from both perspectives. To be clear, it is unequivocally absolutely mad and unacceptable to strike another human who is just trying to do thier job, but there are also not many other sports where you have so many actual kids participating in high-profile, high-pressure events, just expected to handle everything like they are a fully grown adult. I certainly wouldn't have been able to handle the emotions when I was 17 and there are younger players than Yoo on the professional circuit. Definitely needs looked at in more depth by professional chess.

It matters depending what he actually did. A light shove in a crowded scrum or a haymaker from behind? If it's a woman and there's video of him swinging at her head from behind then Yoo is in serious trouble. If it's a man in the same situation then it would just be an unfortunate altercation and the charges are unlikely to result in anything much aside from anger management classes.

@markedwards9247

I bet you the assault consisted of Yoo forcing his way aggressively past a female photographer who was facing the other way, maybe knocking her over. 'Striking a videographer from behind'. We all have experienced how frustrated we feel if we play badly, or blunder, in an important game. This emotion isn't aggression, it is pure frustration. I doubt Yoo meant any harm to anyone. I wouldn't stand in the way of a goalkeeper who had just failed to intercept a goal he should have saved. That doesn't make that goalkeeper an aggressive person. Just a person liable to human emotions. I think we need to see the whole incident before codemning Yoo, and conclude that SLCC have just applied its conditions consistently.

I have a feeling that you are completely correct. I bet he was trying to leave and pushed them from behind. It's impossible to say whether this was a reasonable decision or pr panic overkill without seeing the video footage. I am not willing to trust the chief arbiter's and/or the club's word on this, and I don't think any of us should be. The footage must be made public. And, meanwhile, the admitted cheater is allowed to play (ok, it's not an SLC event, but SLC chose to bid on the tournament knowing Hans would play. Also, Hans should be banned by the USCF, anyway).
@sonnygreen1396
Күн бұрын
SLCC should stick to the facts instead of exaggerating to make a case. If you say someone crumpled a paper, it's understood that they intentionally balled up a piece of paper as if to throw it away. Yoo angrily grabbed his scoresheet to separate his copy and then stuffed it into his pocket, and this resulted in it getting crumpled. This action demonstrates anger/frustration, it does not imply that he thought the paper was worthless or invalid. The exaggeration makes you question what is meant when they say he struck someone from behind. Did he actually strike someone with a hand/fist as their language implies or did he perhaps aggressively bump into someone as he was walking out? If it's the latter case, then SLCC loses all their credibility.

My money’s on either a heavy shoulder bump as he’s storming away or an accidental smack as he was throwing his arms up in frustration. We need to see the video if they’re gonna call it an assault. Assault means there was a threat made, not accidental contact. First of all, assault does not mean a threat was made. It means someone attempted to cause physical injury, pain, or illness (or some other variations on it that aren't relevant to this situation). Second, he walked up and intentionally punched her in the back, which does meet that definition. Third, he has been officially charged with said crime, so they aren't just throwing it out there casually.

That was a brutal loss. Up the exchange but getting beamed by the bishops. We shouldn’t cap on Yoo so much.

Hans throwing some glasses, making damage in the hotel (that he paid for) seems much less serious than this, doing it in public, and assaulting a person!

I know he's only 17 turning 18, but physically assaulting someone crosses a line. You're basically an adult and should know better not to hit people, let alone a woman!

Awesome video and analysis from Eric, very nice from him to care about the mental health and social interactions of these players, who only knows how to train chess. Maybe parents and the social circle must pressure them all to have psychological follow-up.

Glad I watched this video. I had no idea that GMs might be home schooled or otherwise isolated from the usual growing up experiences.

Fabi should not be blamed or affected by this because Fabi is very professional in person and in his game.

Ngl the bye rule is so bad. It introduces a huge element of luck in the scoreboard.

@thomasbolsee I dunno what pairing system is used here, prob. Swiss or RR, but a good pairing system should have flexibility and options to counter any situation "out of the normal". There exists a version of the Keizer system where you can assign - in order to pair for the next round specifically - not a 1, but a 1/2 or 0 to a bye. It does not change the scores, but it creates more realistical pairings. Indeed with a system like round robin all pairings are done beforehand and that seems a weakness to me.

I hope all the people who automatically assumed he didn't do anything bad are enjoying eating crow considering it was apparently a big enough deal that he was not just arrested by also charged with fourth-degree assault. This was no accidental bump or shove.

Fabi’s bishop was superior to Yoo’s rook after the inaccuracies. Fabi is one of the best all time, you can’t get to upset losing to him.

Chess can be unbelievably cruel! If you've never experienced a tantrum after a lost game you don't love the game...I feel for him..But it's unforgivable to attack a person....

Just a sad situation. A 17-year-old kid was unable to control his emotions. It's a tough age in life. I hope the videographer is OK.
