In this video we look at a solution to a somewhat pervasive Chinese manufacturing quality problem with high quality GM Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) replica (clone) units where several have been encountered with defective / broken wired RJ45 ethernet connectivity out of the box not working. This defective hardware prevents the MDI from registering with either the MDI Manager or TIS2Web SPS.
The issue is in the unbranded RJ45 MagJack part itself, and an obvious bad batch from a Chinese supplier that got into manufacturing and went out the door due to poor quality control. We will go over the SMSC LAN9116 PHY controller used by this particular MDI design, and the compatible MagJack RJ45 magnetics circuit and pinout needed to replace the defective factory build successfully. Once the flaw is corrected, the MDI works fine with both the MDI Manager and ACDelco TDS over a wired ethernet. Overall I am very satisfied with the quality and accuracy of the logic board design of this serial 22129579 clone MDI. I did encounter a problem with the firewall software on the laptop that blocked the multicast discovery traffic that the MDI Manager and MDI use to communicate over the LAN and had to switch to another PC before I figured it out, so watch out for that.
And ideal and easy to locate replacement connector is the SparkFun RJ45 MagJack Breakout part BOB-13021 here www.sparkfun.com/products/13021
The jack by itself is sold separately by Sparkfun and "should" be the same as the once used in this video but is not tested by me. I only tested the one they include on the breakout. But if you want to save a little money and try they claim it is the same data sheet, Sparkfun part PRT-08534 here www.sparkfun.com/products/8534
These parts are also available at Mouser.com from Sparkfun. The actual supplier is Morethanall Connectors in Taiwan, and their part number for this is MJF13T3L-KF06B3YG-0808
