It shocked me that other GMs don't roll out in the open. It's not a competition to me, it's collective storytelling.

There are benefits to secretly rolling in occasions. But anytime a GM tries to win against the players, it’s always a bad time

At our table, which is an online table with real dice, basically everyone rolls secretly. So no advantage to the GM, it's all based on trust and if someone ever fudged their dice, then they could, but they had to live with it! Haaaa!

I've been playing a game with a few friends and as a nettunner I always have to think outside the box. So I totally agree. If the gm railroaded me everytime I broke an encounter I'd be getting nothing done lol

I can see the logic of rolling for the players to see to be as transparent as possible I can see the logic of rolling in secret so that you can fudge dice in the players favor to deliver a satisfying story I cannot see the logic behind punishing a player when they have done nothing wrong. That feels like a good way to get players to quit.
