Thank you so much Alex for the video. I am struggling to understand the long sentences that go for 3 to 4 lines, like we see on these passages. Sometimes I reread but it is extremely difficult to decipher what is exactly happening in a particular sentence maybe because of the indirect wordings or vocabulary. How do I improve from this weakness? Any tips on how I can get to understand the gist without rereading too much?

one grammatical correction. apostrophe will be always like this > Krontiris' for words ending with S. and not like this> Krontiris's. This is to avoid hissing sound it generates.

@gmatninjatutoring. Great video.. One question: on Passage 1 Question 3 20:24 - I chose option D because Woody pointed to An Essay on Woman as "reflecting a shift in view" which I took to mean that it offered one of the most original arguments in favor of women's education. Any pointers to avoid making that type of mistake?
@GMATNinjaTutoring

Good question! To eliminate answer choice (D), I'd keep a few pointers in mind. 1) Focus on the exact words/exact meaning of the answer choices. 2) Your goal when reading each answer is to choice is to hunt for a flaw. 3) Watch out for making unfounded leaps in reasoning. In this case, the passage suggests that "An Essay on Woman" is written by an advocate for female education, so it's reasonable to guess it provides an argument in favor of female education. Also, if it provides a "shift in view," it's reasonable to assume it was original in some way. So why is (D) wrong? Well, notice there's a gap between being original and being "one of the most original arguments...in the eighteenth century." If we're hunting for flaws, and wary of making unfounded leaps, that phrase should jump out to us as a potential problem. Notice that (A), on the other hand, makes a claim that doesn't require a huge leap from what's stated in the passage. For those reasons, (D) is wrong and (A) is the correct answer. I hope that helps!

For passage 1 , questions no 3 (a) option claims that education opportunities *after 1750* .it can be before 1750 too .can anyone clarify?
@GMATNinjaTutoring
25 күн бұрын
Good question! To answer that, let's consider a few key points from the passage. First, in the second paragraph, we learn that Woody found that "educational opportunities increased for both girls and boys around 1750." This tells us that 1750 is an important date for Woody -- it's the time at which educational opportunities for females started to increase. Reading on, we learn that an essay written in 1753 (i.e. "An Essay on Woman"), is cited by Woody as evidence of this shift in view. More specifically, this essay demonstrates that "education for females had many advocates before the Revolution." Putting all this together: Woody believes that an "An Essay on Woman" demonstrates a shift in view about women's education that happened in 1750 (NOT before 1750). For that reason, (A) is correct. Thanks again for the question, and let me know if that helps at all!

Quick question 17:08 Passage 1, Q. No. 2 To put the question in a gist it talks about how Kerber's work in different from Woody's. Kerber work was stating things after the American revolution whereas option be states 'prior American revolution' so that means its talking about Woody's work and not Kerber's. That one discusses about one amongst them and not the difference between both. How does it make the do you come to conclusion of that being an answer? Please help me out Thanks in advance.

In the 3rd question why the answer isn’t D? “Feminist scholars cites his view as a prelude to their presentation of rich historical evidence of women’s inequality “
@GMATNinjaTutoring
Жыл бұрын
Great question! Let's take a look at the sentence you mentioned: "Jacob Burckhardt’s view that Renaissance European women “stood on a footing of perfect equality” with Renaissance men has been repeatedly cited by feminist scholars as a prelude to their presentation of rich historical evidence of women’s inequality." What does this sentence tell us? First, Burckhardt thought Renaissance women had equality with men. So why do feminist scholars cite him? Because he provides "prelude" to their evidence that Renaissance women were NOT equal to men. In other words, they cite Burckhardt to provide a contrast with their own views. Let's take a look at answer choice (D): D.Burckhardt’s work provides rich historical evidence of inequality between Renaissance women and men. Note that Burckhardt was actually arguing the opposite. In other words, he thought Renaissance women DID have equality with men. So he doesn't provide evidence of inequality, and (D) is wrong. Let's now consider (C): C.Burckhardt’s view is one that many feminist scholars wish to refute. We know the feminist scholars present Burckhardt's view that Renaissance women were equal to men. Then, these feminist scholars provide evidence of women's inequality. Based on that, we can conclude that they mentioned Burckhardt in order to disagree with him (i.e. refute him), so (C) is correct. Thanks again for the question, and let me know whether that helps!

Minute: 14 Passage 1, Question 1: The author clearly mentions Wood's work to be a notable exception because it shares evidence of the period before the revolution. Why isn't the answer B? Whereas in E, it's not even mentioning the significance by justifying with a timeline and rather just mentioning that the it was atypical. It's just a fact that the work studied the education of girls but what is the motive/the why. Please explain

Good question! For starters, let's check out the following line from paragraph 2: "Prior to Kerber’s work, educational historians barely mentioned women and girls; Thomas Woody’s 1929 work is the notable exception." What does this tell us? Well, before Woody, the education of women and girls was "barely mentioned." However, Woody was an exception to this. In other words, unlike other historians, Woody actually discussed the education of women and girls. So, it would make sense to say that Woody was atypical (different from other historians) in that he examined the education of women and girls. For that reason, (E) is correct. I hope that helps!

To put Passage 2, question 3 here: the Feminist Scholars repeatedly cited Burckhardt's view to support their point that the struggle for equality has existed since the Renaissance. "Jacob Burckhardt’s view that Renaissance European women “stood on a footing of perfect equality” with Renaissance men has been repeatedly cited by feminist scholars as a prelude to their presentation of rich historical evidence of women’s inequality." Now, If I go by the literal meaning of "prelude" it means this POV helped them put this point forward that it's an ongoing issue for a long time. So, isn't Option E a better choice that states Burckhardt's view includes historical evidence to support the scholar's arguments?

Let's start with that sentence you pointed out: "Jacob Burckhardt’s view that Renaissance European women “stood on a footing of perfect equality” with Renaissance men has been repeatedly cited by feminist scholars as a prelude to their presentation of rich historical evidence of women’s inequality." What does this sentence tell us? First, Burckhardt thought Renaissance women had equality with men. So why do feminist scholars cite him? Because he provides a "prelude" to their evidence that Renaissance women were NOT equal to men. In other words, they cite Burckhardt to provide a contrast with their own views. Let's take a look at answer choice (E): E. Burckhardt’s work includes historical research supporting the arguments of the feminist scholars Note that Burckhardt was actually arguing the opposite of what feminist scholars believed. In other words, he thought Renaissance women DID have equality with men. Feminist scholars believed Renaissance women did NOT have equality with men. So Burckhardt doesn't provide support for feminist scholars and (E) is wrong.

For Q1 of passage 1, Shouldn't the answer choice be B. The notable exception was that it focused on the situation before the American revolution. Woody looked at study that was conducted before American Revolution. So, isn't that the notable exception. Also, the whole study was done to challenge the notion of the importance of the American Revolution. At the same time, it doesn't seem to mention that examining female education is atypical. So, I am finding it confusing why E is the answer and not B

As you suggest, the passage mentions a work by Thomas Woody which discusses the period before the American Revolution. But is discussing this period what makes Thomas Woody's 1929 work exceptional? To answer that, consider the following sentence from paragraph 2: "Prior to Kerber’s work, educational historians barely mentioned women and girls; Thomas Woody’s 1929 work is the notable exception. Examining newspaper advertisements for academies, Woody found that educational opportunities increased for both girls and boys around 1750." This tells us that Thomas Woody's 1929 work mentioned girls and their educational opportunities. It also tell us this was "exceptional," prior to Kerber's work. In other words, discussing educational opportunities for girls was "exceptional" or "atypical." For that reason, (E) make sense. But what's wrong with (B)? While it's true that Woody's work discussed the period before the Revolution, we have no indication that this was exceptional or unusual. For all we know, other historians could have focused on the period before the Revolution (perhaps discussing topics other than education) -- either way, the passage doesn't really address this. For that reason, (E) has more support than (B). Thanks for the question, and let us know if that clears things up!

you literally interpreted the passage incorrectly. Tina is not an example who refutes Kelly and Burckhardt, rather, she is the one being refuted by these scholars. Why? because she, like Kelly and burckhardt, bases her studies on a smal privileged sample of the population and uses it to talk about women. Disappointing Gmat... Please do react if you feel I am stating incorrect facts.

Thank you for this comment! You raise a really interesting point about the structure of the passage. What is the PRIMARY reason that Krontiris is mentioned by the author? To answer this, notice the first paragraph talks about a "significant trend among feminist scholars." According to the author, this trend "has entailed a rejection of both Kelly’s dark vision of the Renaissance and Burckhardt’s rosy one." Reading on, we see the second paragraph talks more about "this trend." What trend is the author referring to? Considering the first paragraph, it's clear the "trend" is the "rejection" of both Kelly and Burkhardt. Krontiris is then mentioned as someone who conforms to this trend. To confirm this point, the author tells us that Krontiris is "representative of those authors who offer what might be called a cautiously optimistic assessment of Renaissance women’s achievements." In other words, Krontiris's vision of Renaissance women is neither "dark" nor "rosy," but somewhere in between (i.e. cautiously optimistic). Put another way, Krontiris is someone who rejects both Burkhardt and Kelly. To confirm this interpretation, notice that Question #1 asks us to complete the sentence: "The author of the passage discusses Krontiris primarily to provide an example of a writer who..." The correct answer (D) completes the sentence by saying "...has rejected the views of both Burckhardt and Kelly." This confirms that the author mentions Krontiris PRIMARILY as an example of someone who rejects both Burkhardt and Kelly. Otherwise, the answer to this question wouldn't be (D). All that being said, you raise an absolutely great point - the author has a second, more nuanced reason for mentioning Krontiris. Digging a little deeper, we can conclude that Krontiris is mentioned as someone who rejects Burkhardt and Kelly DESPITE the fact that she focuses on a subset of women that may not be representative of women in general (i.e. women writers). Why is this notable? Well, the recent feminist scholars who rejected Burkhardt and Kelly did so because Burkhardt and Kelly focus on upper-class Italian women (who may not be representative). So it's kind of surprising that Krontiris also rejects Burkhardt and Kelly, even though she TOO generalizes based on a subset of women (i.e. women writers). So the most nuanced interpretation would probably be: the author mentions Krontiris as an example of someone who rejects Burkhardt and Kelly DESPITE the fact that she (like Burkhardt and Kelly) generalizes based on a subset of women that may not be representative of all women. So when you're tackling a GMAT RC passage, how much detail do you need in your description of the author's purpose? Ideally, you want to be laser-focused on the author's PRIMARY purpose, since this will help you both read efficiently and avoid getting lost in the details. In fact, taking this big picture view can also help you make sense of the nuanced details. In other words, if you understand the main thrust of the author's argument first, it becomes much easier to make sense of the nuanced details without losing sight of the bigger picture. Thanks again for your comment, and please do let me know if that helps!
