Watch highlights from the second half and overtime in Sayreville’s hard fought, 49-47 victory over a determined New Brunswick squad at the Bomb Shelter in Parlin.
Trailing 21-19 at the half, and outscored 6-3 early on in the third, Sayreville rallied with a 13-7 spurt capped by a three pointer from freshman Sam Jones to take a 35-34 lead into the fourth.
The Bombers then led 42-40 and were at the foul line with 9.4 seconds to go in regulation, but missed a free throw.
New Brunswick’s Chris Moronta then came down the other end and scored to tie things up at 42-42 with 2.4 seconds left to force the extra session.
The Bombers scored first in overtime on a bucket from sophomore Keithan Shuler off a dish from Sam Omokeji.
Then, after Jones made a free throw, he poked away the ball on the defensive end, hustled after it, and while on the ground, passed the ball to Omokeji for a layup and a 47-42 lead with 2:11 to play in OT.
New Brunswick climbed back within two on a layup by Victor Adeyeri and a foul shot by Moronta, but Jones made two free throws with 21 seconds left for a 49-45 lead.
Omari Williams pulled the Zebras back within two, and New Brunswick had a chance to tie the game with two seconds to play, but freshman Chidi Chukwurah was able to knock away the lob pass on the inbounds to seal the Bombers win.
Jones led Sayreville (4-15) with a team high 18 points while Chukwurah chipped in with 9 and Omokeji added 7.
Adeyeri led all scorers with a game high 19 points in a losing cause for New Brunswick (2-16) while Moronta chipped in with 10, and senior Omari Williams added 8.
