GM killed it in the late 80s and early 90s...GNX, Typhoon, Syclone, the Camaro and Corvette weren't the only performance stars by GM back then.

0-60 in 5.3 is impressive; doesn't matter if it makes 280 horsepower, 380, or whatever. It's how you hook that power to the ground that counts.

the mpgs would be lower today due to ethanol in the gas today (roughly 20% lower today). my 93 Z28 was rated at 26 mpg on the highway when new, but with the 10% ethanol gas and different blend in general that we have today, i've never gotten more then 21 mpg and that was while hypermiling and i have freer flowing exhaust and a better flowing air filter then stock.

I was was working for a guy in 91 that had to have his Corvette repaired for some reason, his service loaner was a Syclone. He traded his Vette in on it. I don't know if he still has it or not.

I grew up seeing these all over the place, now they are considerably rare. My 1st car was an 89 S-10 4.3 liter-- basically the non turboed version of this truck. Even that thing was fast considering power to weight. It was a factory sleeper no doubt!

Used to own a Red/Red bone stock '93 Typhoon from 1998 - 2005. Ran 13.85 one night at the drag strip in October when the air was nice and cool and dry and dense. But, I had to launch it SO hard, I knew I would break it if I kept that up. Also, the trap speed was only in the mid 90's, even running that ET. It got such good traction, that's really all you needed. And, they've got the aerodynamics of a barn door. It's hard to find one now that isn't modified. It was a great bracket racer, though. You could run 14.70s reliably all night long and not worry about hurting any parts. And, I found that the ABS would freak out if you were on the brakes and the suspension became unloaded, like if you hit a big bump or something under braking. Then, you got a wicked vibration through the brake pedal, and the braking efficiency went to almost nil. To solve it, you had to take your foot off the brake pedal, then re-apply the pedal pressure to get the brakes to behave again. Not ideal in a panic braking situation. I sold mine and bought an SRT-10

By the way, I believe there has been very few SUVs and Pick ups with performance equal to these two GMCs, and now 21 years have passed! I think the only few are the F150 Lightning, Dodge Ran SRT-10 with the Viper engine and Porsche Cayenne, and very few others! These two are GMC's craziest trucks ever!

Correction: an automatic is probably best for drag racing. I too wish these two were available with a manual transmission, but I do understand the concept of the automatic being an advantage for the turbo, as one can build up boost at launch (due to the engine actually having load), making for an excellent take-off.

@2damaxmr2 actually automatic transmissions are better for turbo applications cause it keeps the boost, and secondly a automatic can shift faster than a manual. Manual is for a drivers car and a automatic that is built right is for racing

yeah theyre braking has always amazed me HOWEVER they do suffer from really bad brake fade. if you try more than 1 stop like that without a cooldown in between the test, youd see them get a lot longer distance each time. upgrading to some slotted racing disk with some racing pads would solve that easily though

I am with Power Brake Service, we do performance brake upgrades and we need to get ahold of any of the Typhoon, Syclone, turbo GM trucks of that era to do a video of. Turbos rob vacuum from the brake booster and we retrofit hydraulic brakes to solve that. Check out my page to see what we did with a Turbo Buick and a T-bird SC, we've done the Turbo GM trucks before, but want to do a video to show clients how to install it, please let me know of somebody in the community in Southern California.

Autos have more driveline loss than a manual, meaning they take more power to turn the wheels. The only time an auto is going to beat a manual is in a drag race with high hp cars. Any other form of racing, a manual is going to win.
