It's a good thing the drivers never dropped the token they had just collected or missed it completely, it would be a fair walk back after getting a long liner to a stop, LOL, thumbs up Danny, really enjoyed watching

Thanks Thomas :) You're not wrong lol and some drivers took a chance at the rate they passed through as well, many at 40mph+! Never seen one dropped or missed though in my time.

@@TheIrishMainline On Summer Bank Holiday Friday in 1983, I and another enthusiast (a clergyman who shall remain nameless!), armed with footplate passes, were travelling on a 2 x small GM -hauled relief to the 18 35 Connolly - Rosslare Harbour, which was scheduled non-stop from Pearse to Arklow. Passing through platform 1 in Bray at about 30mph, our clergyman friend, who was in the co-driver's seat, unfortunately missed the staff. This resulted in an emergency brake application, some very unclergyman-like language from the Connolly driver who had to walk back 300 yards to get it and a delay of about 8 minutes. The reverend gentleman was highly embarrassed, but all three of us laughed about it later over a can of tea. Happy days!

Great stuff Danny. I never knew about the token system until I just looked it up. Very clever :). When did they stop using it ?
@TheIrishMainline
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob. It ceased operation in the early 2000s when the signalling system was converted to electric and controlled via mini CTC from Connolly. Subsequently the loop was moved from Thomastown to Ballyhale and the cabin closed.

1:20 now that was a token exchange on the fly!! I'm impressed how fast those Bell liners came through, but I think that one took the prize.
@TheIrishMainline

You think that's fast? I've seen many's an exchange done on them at over 40mph! Not for the signalman of a nervous disposition... Heard a few stories of the the staff failing to be collected and the driver having a rather long walk of shame back to retrieve it.

@@whitiemarsh3671 Thanks m8. They were rarely used tbh, only footage I've seen of them in action was on the Cork and Sligo lines. Don't recall snatchers being installed at any station on the Waterford line.

More wonderful footage of times past in Co. Kilkenny. Was the 2600 railcar train which didn't stop at Thomastown a scheduled service or a weekend extra?
@TheIrishMainline
5 жыл бұрын
That used to be the Fridays only 19:20 stopping service but was changed around this time to run express, much to the consternation of many local students who used to use it to return home from college each weekend!

Excellent Shots from the Good Years Danny!😃.When was Thomastown Signal Cabin taken out of use?.And back in the 1990s did Thomastown Train Station not get served by every HeustonStation/Waterford or Waterford/HeustonStation Train Service?.
@TheIrishMainline

Thanks Alan. Thomastown was removed as a block post in 2004 with the loop being lifted and shifted 5 miles south to Ballyhale. The 2600 clip shows what used to be a 19:20 stopping service on Fridays but was changed to run express, the only service that didn't serve the station.
