i think this is of concern for a number of professions - i always do and did so (working in a print-shop, and now as a applience-tester)

Hi, if you ever get the time, could you show us how to design the welded flange plate on the underside of the steel beam at 4:45? I have always wondered how this is done. Also, are there thermal bridging issues with this detail?

You can use galvanised steel or paint it with blackjack as well as insulation to reduce the thermal bridging. I can do a video on how I justified this design.

Hi did you actually go for a UKB with bottom plate on the design? Just as they are no good in torsion, so will rotate and cause cracking in the masonry as it does so? I would typically specify a RHS with bottom plate

I did in this case because that’s what they wanted but I had to add stiffeners to make sure it wasn’t going to buckle due to torsion. It was an overturning issue in this situation anyways but yes normally would spec a box section

@@EverydayDazz that’s fair enough. Just like to question to broaden my knowledge of peoples views on things. I find different engineers can take different approaches to things 👍🏼

Definitely. Always more than one way to do something. Sometimes it comes to personal preference or a preference of the client or contractor. 🙂

Hey Dazz, any chance you could do an example calculation for the beam design you had sketched in this example? Beam on inner leaf supporting masonry on outer via soffit plate on the bottom?

I can do at some point 👍

Hi Darren, can you recommend a text book that looks into portal frame analysis which also includes deflection or sway? Im looking at the structural integrity of a small steel lean-to cover that has too much sway. I wanted to do some calcs to prove the sway also i need to come up with some solutions to reduce this. FYI im not a structural engineer but on a MEng route as a Mechanical engineer so need to brush up on my structural analysis stuff. Thanks

You can have a look at SCI P164 or P252 for guidance. They should have a worked example of portal frames at the end.
