In The Journey Pt 5: Goal is the Roll, Bible teacher and Walking The Text founder, Brad Gray, explores how the visual aspect of the Hebrew language can get lost in translation. It’s not that translations are bad or inaccurate. It’s that they miss out on the depth of meaning the Hebrew language conveys, and Psalm 37:5 is a classic example.
Most translations of Psalm 37:5 read, “Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him, and he will act.” What’s interesting is that the Hebrew word translated as “commit” is the word “gol” (pronounced like “goal”), and it literally means, “to roll.” So, in Hebrew, the text reads, “Roll onto the LORD your path, trust on him, and he will act.” So, the goal is to roll (gol). There’s a visual dynamic of laying the path of our life on top of God’s path so that God’s way shapes how we journey.
For example, think about what happens when you take off your shoes and socks and walk barefoot. Once our thick soles and cushy socks are removed, we tend to walk a little more gingerly because our feet are responding to the path. That’s exactly what Psalm 37:5 is getting at. Let God’s path inform how you walk. The problem is many of us want to walk God’s path, but we want to walk it our way. In The Journey Pt 5: Goal is to Roll, we’ll examine how our comforts, conveniences, and personal preferences hold us back from walking God’s path, God’s way.
