Ah yes... the good ol' days, when getting hit in the face didn't shatter your bones or give you concussions or anything else, because the shots weren't coming at 100+ mph. I'm sorry, but anybody complaining about goalie masks is out of their head. If goalies today didn't wear masks there'd be a lot of goalies dying or retiring early. It's nothing to do with being manly or hardcore or anything. But anyway, this is a fucking awesome piece of footage.

Old style straight (non curved) sticks made it difficult to lift the puck. Once curved sticks came in, it became insane for a goalie not to wear a mask. Jaques Plante made the first one, and as a response to anyone questioning him for this, he drew stiches on the mask where pucks had hit him. It didn't take long to fill the mask up with stiches.

In Sept/69, when Ted Green got hit in the head with a stick by Wayne Maki and was out for the season, Boston GM Milt Schmidt wanted all Bruin players to wear helmets. Bobby Orr said no to that and threw his away. End of mandatory helmets on Boston. For the position players, there was the argument back then that going helmet-free gave players a greater awareness of incoming elbows, checks, sticks, and even pucks.

As a child in the 1960s, I fell strongly to be a goaltender. I saw courage in goaltenders because they are the last line of defence. However, I saw that goaltenders were often blamed for the loss in a game. It did not appeal to me to be blamed for something that was the failure from other players.
