For goats that are more susceptible to worms, I'd recommend using a stronger dewormer and staying away from Safe Guard. Also you make sure you do your research as to what dewormers work best for your area. In my area, Safe Guard is basically like water and it's useless and a waste of money because it has been overused and all the worms are immune to it. I use Valbazen because that's what works best for me, but definitely ask other local farmers or your local vet as to what works best in your area to combat internal parasites.
@chrisazar7950

I use ivermectin except for tapeworm. White worm, white wormer.
@TallCFarms

Your area. What really matters is your goats. Have you over-used safeguard? Your goats' parasites will only be resistant to what you have used as wormers. If you can't or won't do fecals every time you worm, it's always best to rotate wormers.
@40streetblack79

Yeah,but Freeman,safeguard & pancur are the only ones with fenbenzole, which iz the only ingredient that kills whipworm,so you need safeguard l rock with valbazen but l dnt know if kills whipworms,does it but lm get safeguard bcuz of the ingredients!

Good info Daniel. If goats will eat turnips with or without roots, they’re loaded with thiamine. so get a couple of five for a dollar pack and sow them and give them the greens as a snack and extra thiamin. I use the roots in my stews and they’re so good.

Iodine is good for navel dip, and treating injuries. Also a bleach water combo 1:10 for large skin tears will keep from paying a large surgery bill to stitch those tears up. I wash with the bleach water then spread honey on the injury and cover with gauze if I can. works great on horses, goats and sheep.

hello arms family homestead. i wanted to thank you for this video. i have been watching your you tube channel for a few weeks now, and this video here helped save one of my young goats. she came from a auction, and the person that got her decided she was too small for her herd, and gave her to me. after a week or so, i started noticing her neck, jaw seemed to be very swollen, and she had some loose stool. i separated her from my other goats, and gave her some ivermectin, and also some antibiotic in the hip that my friend had on hand. she never quit eating or drinking, but i could just tell from the way she acted she didnt feel good. its been 3 days now since i treated her and her jaw/neck is already less swollen, and she is acting more like a young goat should act. i will keep a close eye on her just in case. anyway, if it hadnt of been for your video, i wouldnt have known what to have looked for, and might have wound up losing her. my goats are basically my pets, but i do sell their babies once they kid, and sure dont want any problems. thank you once again for this informative video. my knowledge of goats is very limited, but i am learning. thanks daniel.

Really learning a lot from watching your videos. Plan on raising goats eventually and your goat videos are really helping. I did work for this lady that crosses boar with Nubian to get a meat goat with milk and she has great success with it. She also has other livestock and when any of them are having a harder time with weight or wanting to give them a boost she adds calf manna to their feed and let me tell you. That adds on the weight fast. It's worked with my horses and dogs as well.

Thank you so much for this info. We have 3 small dairy goats. Since we are pretty new to goats, we had the goat Vet out this past summer as they turned a year old and needed their yearly vaccine. She did it and showed us how to do it. She tested their fecals and the youngest (our polled buck) had some coccidiosis. Interestingly, she used the same stuff you have for that, but it was a paste that she squirted into their mouth. I will certainly be following your goat videos !! Thanks again.

Just curious if a goat does get worms and i dont notice it or dont catch it in time can my kids or my chickens or anything else get the worms from the goats? And also if i butcher a goat that has worms would the worms be in the meat? And be possible transferable?
@carolhargis7680
5 жыл бұрын
Worms are generally species specific(the exception is sheep & goats have the same parasites), meaning each species has it's own version & cannot be infected with worms from another species(they call that being a "dead end host"). That's why multi species grazing is recommended. Each cleans the pasture of the other's parasites so everyone is healthier. Stomach worms live in the digestive system so they do not infect the meat, although an animal with a heavy parasite load will tend to be unthrifty & therefore have less meat on them. Btw, I'm not a vet. Just been raising (& learning how to keep healthy) goats for 8 years & counting. 😍

Excellent video, Daniel. I'm sure it will help a lot of new homesteaders out, as well as old ones. : ) Have you ever used Diatomaceous Earth for remedies with the goats, Daniel? I mined some from the mountain in my area and gave some to a friend for her goat, that had parasites, had low energy because of them, had a skin condition and she put some in the goats water and doused his fur with it. Four days later he was spry, jumping around and all conditions cleared up. Pretty amazing what those ancient little diatoms will remedy, from fleas, ticks, parasites to bedbugs. Works for people as well as animals. The one precaution is to try not to breathe the powder directly into the lungs, because the skeletons of those diatoms have sharp edges and can irritate the lungs. Whenever I've breathed in little amounts a ta time I didn't have any issues, but it does draw the moisture from your mouth. Lol. Be safe and cover nose and mouth with a mask or handkerchief when handling it. You can buy it from feed stores in big bags, sold at garden centers, used in people's swimming pools. You can get food grade as well. Lots of good info at diatomaceous dot org : )

Head tilt & circling can be caused by 2 things I am aware of. What Daniel talked about here is called goat polio(I'm sure there are KZitem video examples out there). The other is Listeriosis, a bacteria found in spoiled silage, moldy feed, & in the animal's digestive tract. It is zoonotic(transmissible to humans & other species). Thankfully, Daniel's goats had the best of the 2 conditions(if there is a "best" case).

Dogs will often know things like anxiety, heart rhythms, seizure activity, migraines, sugar highs/lows and other health problems. They will pester you trying to tell you. Hope Bear just wanted a ball thrown but when he pesters you please do a health assessment. My dogs (4 at different times of my life) have alerted me to seizures an hour b4; heart palpitations 20 minutes b4; panic and PTSD; and currently my dog alerts me to migraines 30 minutes b4 I have auras that used to be my signal. My vet had a conniption when she found out I was giving copper to my goats. 😂 I have since stopped to see if the copper in their feed, coupled with copper in their water from my water pipes & the copper in their loose minerals is enough. After 2 years, no one is deficient, so I guess they don't need the extra. But if goats are just on browse, hay, don't drink from copper water pipes(although I know people who throw a piece of copper in the bottom of their water troughs)& don't have loose mineral with copper it would be a necessary addition to their diet as I've read they do need more copper than other ruminants.

Thanks Daniel! Great info, but I was trying to look back to see if I could find if you had any footage of B1/Thiamin deficiency and what it looks like-but I couldn’t find anything. I know you described it in this video, but it would be handy to see exactly what it looks like-I know it’s a terrible thing when ur animals are sick, but as you said, you want to be able to identify what’s going on real quick and fix it. I did see the vlog you did on the baby goat that didn’t make it (RIP baby goat😔) but you mentioned selenium deficiency at the time-that doesn’t seem like the same thing as thiamin deficiency-do both deficiencies look the same? Maybe you could do an episode on what illness in goats actually looks like (ie clips of what you have collected over the years) so we are able to learn from you how the goats behave/look like when something is wrong-just a thought.
