Can I use 50/50 lye solution instead of dissolving the lye un water..also can I substitue the olive oil for sweet almond oil?
@Lovelygreens
5 ай бұрын
Sorry, no to the oil substitution. Too much sweet almond oil in soap recipes usually causes early rancidity in the bars. The lye and water amounts in this recipe are a 50/50 mix. Or are you talking about masterbatched lye solution?

After 2 days your bars are soap! No need for gloves. The curing process just gives the bars time to dry out & harden.

I'm curious how many batches you made before you successfully had a batch that came out like this? I tried it specifically made sure my temperatures were exactly within 9° of each other and immediately it seized up when I started blending. The lie solution was a couple of degrees cooler than the oils but they were within 5° of each other
@Lovelygreens
5 ай бұрын
This is a simple soap recipe, and it comes out perfectly every time for me. I suspect that you might be using a fragrance oil instead of an essential oil - they're notorious for causing seizing. One way to find out is to make this soap without fragrance and see.
@lucretiawrolstad3997
5 ай бұрын
@@Lovelygreens great idea! I figured I'd try it again, just to be sure it wasn't the temperature that was the issue. The bottle says that essential oils but I know it doesn't look the same as my name brand essential oils so it's possible that it's a cheaply made one or is in fact a fragrance oil. Thanks for your encouragement

I use food-grade lye supplied by a UK soapmaking company called the Soap Kitchen. Food grade lye is what you need to ensure the longest shelf life possible for your soap.

Thank you for this recipe. I’m making this now. Can you tell me the shelf life for this recipe?
@Lovelygreens
Күн бұрын
For home use, it doesn't have a specific shelflife. However, if you use old ingredients to make it, there's a higher chance of the soap going rancid quickly. Rancid soap smells bad, and that scent lingers on your skin if you use it. For selling soap, the shelflife is dependent on the ingredients you use. The closest best-by date is the best-by date of the soap.

We've raised pygmies for a few years now and I happen to come across a great price on two dairy goats who needed a home. We are getting a gallon a day so I thought maybe I should go back to soap making. I never made goat milk soap and I was hoping this would be a way to use up some of this milk. But when you look at the ingredients to make a batch of soap, the only way to make this economically feasible is to buy everything in bulk. Lye is expensive! Nothing is inexpensive anymore ....Next thing you know you spent $400 and you're only using 2 oz of goat milk to make a batch of soap. I'm not so sure this is the way I'm going to use up my goat milk. 😂
