Woohoo, 58 days, I can't wait! :) I don't mind the buck news, honestly: knowing that the animal you are buying is the animal it's meant to be is really important. You need to be confident when you buy something that costs ~$1000 that it IS what it's supposed to be. That when you breed him to, say, twenty, thirty does over the next five years that every one of those kids is going to have a decent chance of improving their herds, because you're confident in their sire's genetics. Congratulations, also! I hope this year of President-ing is good :)

You are going to love Travis and Cade Cockburn!! They are amazing judges!! And also I am not upset at all about the mandatory DNA. I am concerned as a breeder of cost (as you mentioned all performance adds up and is pricey). As of now I will not pay for the DNA typing rather the new owner will have to. Which also leads me to wondering...the buck/buckling market is flooded here in the southeast. Curious if this will change it and folks will just wether. I am super careful and picky as to what bucks carry the Hill Valley Farm name therefore this may make me even more picky.

Interesting about the DNA for the Bucks. I don't know why anyone wouldn't want that in place other than financial reasons. I guess one possible way of getting past that would be for the testing to be covered by ADGA or have it included in the price of registration or something. But of course, that would make the registration price go up. For me, I'd be okay paying that extra if it meant I knew exactly what line my goats were coming from. Some really shady stuff can start happening, and it would be really hard to deal with having several generations from a buck that wasn't the buck you were told. Especially if that line wasn't a great line.

Congratulations to you & Emily! I don’t have goats nor have I ever had them. I enjoy watching yours & learning from you, though. It sounds similar to the AKC in dogs. They want DNA of the stud when he father’s a 3rd litter. That 3 rd litter & later cannot be AKC registered without the stud’s DNA. Like you said, it is for the Pedigree. I never had to do it because my boy wasn’t AKC Registered at first due to his breeder not giving her stud’s DNA. There was a big mixup with litters & after it all got worked out, I was able to register him AKC shortly before i had to retire him due to an injury. So I totally get the DNA thing. Overall it is a good thing.

I recommend Crystal's video about the importance of Selenium supplement for the does; deficiency in Selenium causes SERIOUS problems, including death for the kids. Look at the channel (click on the name Blue Cactus Dairy Goats) and look for "Playlists" - click on that and a list of topic related videos will guide you to Goat Care. There's a lot to learn, but protecting the health of your herd is #1 -- especially when you have does to breed. Crystal has everything from birthing supply videos, with links where you can find them.....to hoof maintenance and of course the seasonal health/worming/supplement administrations and HOW to do all of those tasks. A word of caution: Some worming meds WILL cause miscarriage in pregnant does. Preparation for the kidding season begins the year before. Good luck to you. 🌷

Re DNA testing of bucks- how does this affect use of semen from deceased bucks (that were never tested)? ex) if you breed a doe or does to some top sires via AI who may never have been tested in their lifetimes? We had Nubians and LaManchas with Top Ten and GCH pedigrees. Would this new rule mean those bucklings could be not registered in the future? Thanks for clearing up my concerns. Good video with lots of exciting content!
@WickedAwesomeGardening

It shouldn’t be any different from bucklings being born now from living sires who have never had their DNA on file. It’s less about verifications at the moment than it is building a database for the future I think.
@SageandStoneHomestead
8 ай бұрын
I think they'll be alright as a lot of those goats used for AI have been DNA typed already. And if not that's okay it's just the bucks born going forward, that THEIR kids can't be registered unless the DNA typing is done on their sire who would have been born this year.

I see the buckling DNA requirement reducing the registered breeding stock. Maybe that's what ADGA wants..? I hear there has been a mountain of registered bucklings to choose from. Line breeding is a big thing in show worlds, whereas genetic diversity becomes a concern only after it has been lost from a breed. Since unregistered Nigies or their offspring can't become registered to herd books, might lose a chunk of genes in this confusion. Not show lines, but "just" dairy focused herds might not bother with the hassle. I do prefer my country's rules where every goat (and sheep, and cow) HAS to be registered (3 months age for goats and sheep, 20 days for cattle). There will be a record of lineage for everyone, whether cross-bred or purebred or made into pure from mixed ancestry. Of course our animal numbers are less than a single State😁

I’m still waiting for ADGA to even verify my signature so I can officially get my goats under my name. 😂 So while I support DNA records for bucks etc, shouldn’t they handle their current backlog before adding a ton more data they are going to have to update?

I'm in favor of the DNA typing of bucks as well. Any honest Breeder would be in my opinion. Anything that comes up will be tracable but not only that, proven lines (the best) can be built from those lines to replace any collapsed family trees. ADGA had some of our AGS goats papers for THREE YEARS and those transfers finally just went through, as well as a couple milk Stars. They are getting the kinks smoothed out.

Three years?? Goats are going to die before ADGA even register their birth at some point. Crazy that they're asking for a higher workload when they can't even handle the one they have. I feel that there shouldn't be requirements that cost a goat owner more $, if the ADGA doesn't even have their current back log addressed. These authoritative agencies are always too happy to take your $ without offering reasonable results. If you don't pay for this new requirement, you suffer the consequences, but who holds the ADGA accountable to deliver once they start collecting their fees? The hardship falls to the goat owner if AGDA fails to deliver..the ADHA doesn't suffer if they fail to deliver.

Here’s my concern about the DNA. I have 3rd and 4th generation does on our farm. Sire, grand sire, great grand sire were born here too. All dead now. So how do I put a buckling on file when there’s nothing to trace back to? I don’t have hair from the dead sires. As it wasn’t mandatory before, a lot of us thought nothing of keeping hair on file. So what do they do when they hit dead ends? Make our whole herd null? That wouldn’t be right now fair. Now if they want to bring in all this DNA this year, keep it mandatory, and starting 2025 records will be checked strictly to ensure buck kids are matching to their sires DNA…I’d be fine with that. I think most would be happy to contribute their part. This will help cut back on the flood of registered bucks in the market. And only the better bred ones will be more likely to be registered. Otherwise, I feel this is a scary move by ADGA. I have spent thousands on my herd. I grew up with these does and have been breeding, selling, and milking for years. Now I’m in the performance group. If I had my herd kicked from the registry it would hurt me immensely. Destroy all I’ve built and hurt all those that have bought from me in good conscience. Maybe it’s not as scary as I think and there’s ways to ensure my herd is approved as long as I’m sending DNA etc. Idk. If someone can explain it all in a way that would put me at ease, I’d much appreciate it! 😅

It's not the old bucks that need their DNA on file. Any BUCKLING born this year will need his DNA collected to register HIS future offspring. So if you buy or keep a new breeding buck born this year, you will need to collect his DNA to be able to register his daughters and sons. Makes sense to me to keep the DNA as buyer's responsibility rather than breeder's.
