I already had a hammock, but living in swampy Florida I knew I needed a bugnet. Rather than buy a new hammock I made my own mosquito net, actually I have two. They were both made from leftover building materials and camouflaged with leftover house paints.i even have grommets in one of them. Unfortunately they are not as light as a real mosquito net, but they are durable and do work. One is made from pool screen and the other from weed cloth. Going to use one this week along with a homemade tent design that is quite unique in that it can be set up in a number of ways and is super light and compact. Good job on yours, I especially like the way the net is stored.

I'm so impressed by your design. Using the carry bag as a ridgeline organizer blew me away. Can you comment on the durability of the hammock, now that it's been 3 years and a half since you made it?

This setup was made for a friend so I'm not sure how often it is used...so far she hasn't had any problems with it. The two that we use have seen heavy use. The hammocks are still in great condition. Our first generation bug nets had some problems. The bug net in this video has a ton of improvements from the first ones we made. The first ones we made lasted about 5 years with moderate use. We expect this reinforced bug net to last longer.

Awesome design. I love that you can slide it back and stow it when the bugs aren't an issue. It looks like you essentially followed Fronkey's design and didn't close from the cord lock to the ridgline on one end. Instead sewing channels and running shock cord there as well. Do I have that about right? I am certain I can turn this into a goat roping if I get it wrong. Thanks in advance.

Stephen Greer exactly like Fronkey style but the one side is left open. I also got the idea of simply folding the bug net over without a seam from FireInMyBones. There are a few threads discussing the bug net over at Hammock Forums

The bug net alone weighs 2.5 oz (that weight includes all of the cord locks etc). sorry for the delayed reply :)

Looks great But when you laydown in it mosquitoes will drilled through the bottom of the hammock. And you will know about it!

We use under quilts when we use hammocks even in the dead of summer so that keeps the bugs from biting from underneath. You can also treat your hammock with Permethrin if bugs are really bad in your area!

This is great! I love what you did with the bug net and bishop bag. What material did you use for the net?

Do you think the .5 oz netting is wide enough for an 11' hammock with a 110" ridge-line without needing to sew two pieces together?

I think over 9'6" hammock you'll need to sew 2 pieces together and trim a bit off the bottom to get a good fit. Someone suggested that you can make tarp snake skins from the excess you cut off the bottom.

Hi! I’m Flip-Flopping the AT and am changing out my kit after gleaning info from other hikers. I’m not familiar with making my own gear, so are you interested in making another for profit? How much would it cost for your model?

I don't think we're ready to sell them...but there's SO many good hammock makers out there, I'm sure you can find a good one :)

Tim Ellender we didn't do video of the construction process. We got most of our ideas from hammockforums.net. The stowable bug net, the bugnet bag, and the hammock storage bag/Ridgeline organizer was all our idea though. If I can find some details about construction I'll post it, but it was mostly on-the-fly construction. MtnGoat might chime in also about construction...she did the sewing :-)

There is a thread about this hammock here: www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php/136919-GoatBone-Ultralight-Hammock-and-Bug-Net?highlight=goatbone Near the end of the thread I posted as much detail as I could remember. There is a very rough sketch of my 'plan'. Maybe that will help you if you decide to build one. Good luck!

It's pretty time consuming to make someone else a hammock since we really do spend extra time making it perfect ("we" meaning MtnGoat does all the sewing). There's so many good hammock makers out there though that I'm sure someone will make you exactly what you want :)
