Hi @Sawyer Ridge Farm! I love that you traded bucks with Dutch. He was a big boy from the day he was born and always stood out amongst the herd. I think he'll mature into a handsome buck like the one you already have. I'm sorry to hear about the chickens. Any loss to a flock hurts. That is a devastation though. Those baby bunnies are too cute! The pigs are looking good too! I can't wait to see what other additions are going to be made.

I have lost whole flocks of chickens a few times. Bobcats in particular. Last winter I lost a flock. Bobcats again. They took 3 with them, but they killed every last chicken. It is so frustrating and disheartening. We had a hard time getting chicks this year, but we finally found some pullets. The farmer next door raises purebred Aricaunas for FFA and the like mostly...show chickens. He gave us 2 recently. One is the rarer silver.

I'm so sorry to hear about the chickens. Alex was so happy & excited to get that breed & they were doing so well. The raccoons, mink, snakes, coyotes etc all seem like chickens as much as we do. I hope you are able to get rid of those aggressive raccoons! Maybe a hotwire fence that gets turned on at night after the birds get in will give any future predators a change of mind and get them to move on?

Sorry to hear of the loss of Alex's chickens, remember her talking about them. That young buck is already getting big, he is going to make a marvelous addition to your herd. I remember my mom making tunnels for the chickens to take them into the rows between the plants in the garden. So much better than having to hoe each row. Each tunnel was three feet tall and easy to move, which we did every few days. Good luck on your battle against the predators. Prayers.

I lost 10 chickens a couple of years ago. I don't know what got them, but it could well be raccoons or hawks. This time we got all new chickens, my husband built a fortress. Not only does it have a fence around it, it has a "roof" of fence wire as well. So far, it's been about 10 months and we've not lost a hen yet.

i use to free range my chickens also, once the racoons find your chickens they are not safe. I then built a 6 foot fence and kept them in there. At 230 in the afternoon I came out and saw a racoon taking one of my chickens over the fence, I have since enclosed the whole top which took a week as the coop fenced area was so big. No more missing chickens. Good luck, sorry for the loss.
