That red warning light is so bizarre and out of place. It's like the developers realized this kind of over-the-shoulder camera view doesn't work for a beat-em-up style of gameplay so they put that blinking little light in rather then making the camera spread out. As you said before, this camera angle is generally good for shooters and such, but they're so devoted to copycatting The Last of Us that they copy things that don't even make sense in their own gameplay style.

What bothered me the "RPG elements" (I use the term loosely in GoW 2018) was how arbitrary they felt. RPG elements, even light ones such as those in the Souls series, are usually included to open up new gameplay options that the player wouldn't otherwise have. In GoW 2018, there's only one way to play, and altering Kratos' stats doesn't change anything -- it's not like you can do a _magic run_ or something analogous. It would've been _really_ nice if Kratos had, oh I don't know, an assortment of new and imaginative weapons _like he did in the older games_ for the player to experiment & toy around with. It doesn't take much to justify the inclusion of an RPG stats system. The aforementioned Souls series did a pretty good job.

If you're shit at the game then yeah that's the thought process
@StrunDoNhor

Lubble-1397 no, even once you know what you’re doing, having to track your stats just ends up gating your experience. The problem is that, aside from Cooldown, the stats don’t amount to anything meaningful. In dedicated action-RPG’s, investing in different stats usually gives you access to new builds. You have stat requirements, damage scaling, etc. All GoW 2018 had to do was give us different weapons or abilities to justify min-maxing specific stats for specific builds. Unlocking new moves as you progressed was a great first step, but it needed expanding. God of War 2018 is a game that _looks_ like an action-RPG, but with none of the depth or per-encounter decision making that normally comes with it.

And that's why video game reviews exist, to not only inform the viewer of if a games is good, but to also dismantle the game and point out some flaws. I'd actually say this game struck a good balance between a cinematic experience and being a fun video game. Now I can certainly see why the traditional hack and slash fans wouldn't like the gameplay as much, but for someone who is more into the Dark Souls type combat then hack and slash like myself, this game is good storytelling on top of phenomenal gameplay. Considering how long the game is, the cut scenes are actually a really small portion of it. I would say the only thing I don't like about the combat is that I would much prefer the camera to be further away from the character, but I suppose they made that choice for a smoother transition into the cut scenes.

100% with you on the single-shot camera thing. The reason it's impressive in films is because it takes a whole bunch of people operating at their absolute best at the same time for an extended period of time; somewhat less impressive when it's just programmed in, so you have to ask "why did they choose this? Is this the best option or would cuts have actually suited the scene better?" In some cases here it just became distracting, adding a bunch of shaky energy to totally static scenes of conversation for seemingly no reason.

Single-shots are not impressive because of the fact it's difficult to set up. They're impressive because it's used to convey a certain feeling. "Yes, but, but, God of War grew up! We got rid of the teenage-mindset senseless violence and boobies! Deep stories with meanings! We are now adults!" - every gamejourno about God of War All I got to say is that if this is what growing up means, then I guess kids are right: adults are boring as fuck. Also, actual adults don't need to try and act like adults (do just adult things, like adults things etc.), actual, mentally grown up people are mature enough to let go and be goofy every now and then. They are old enough to pick up funny, entertaining, popcorn movies or crazy, violent games and have fun with them and not let someone trying to shame them for liking mindless fun be a problem. It's the children, either actual children or people mentally at that stage, who have try to act like adults to pass as them. And I can't get over the feeling that gamejournos who praise this game for "growing up" and showing the way for the rest of the industry, are actually just children trying to pass as adults: "Look, we only like grownup things like serious stories with none of that crazy action! Only teenage boys like games like the old God of War games!" P.s. You pretty much summed up my experience with the game so far (even though I don't have history with the other character action games like Bayonetta, Devil May Cry or God of War). At this point, a bit over 10 hours into the game I have to force myself to play it through just because I spent 69,95 € on it. I'm against scores with decimals on it, but if you are going to have them, then be consistent and be VERY attentious who you give a 10 to! Games that DIDN'T get 10s out the door: Silent Hill 2, MGS3, FF7, FF9, Thief 2, Deus Ex, Planescape Torment, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime, RE4, REmake, Xenogears, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Chrono Trigger, System Shock 2, Half Life, Half Life 2, Shadow of the Colossus... And suddenly, to surpass these timeless classics, we are in an age where it's so easy to get a 10 even with no groundbreaking qualities! I honestly dont care for the reviews, but for the people who buy into it. In 5-year post-Last of Us world I thought we've been through this but I was wrong. Viral marketing is through the fuckin roof

This whole video, especially towards the end personifies how I feel about gaming so well. I generally liked GOW, but at the same time I didn't like it either. I got bored of the amount of enemies the game kept chucking at me and was desperate for the cutscenes to play out instead of the actual game itself. I played on "Give Me God Of War" as my first time round and a lot of the points point brang up in the video really hit home for me. I'm quite fed up of all the games they're spoon feeding me nowadays because all of my favorite to play games are at least 10 years old or over now (I'm 26 btw). Half the stuff they sell to us now needs to be a story driven, 100 hour, RPG element, open world, BeAuTiFuL GrApHiCs and cut scene heavy drivel. It's happened to me so much recently with most of the modern stuff I've bought, I feel quite pissed off when I go back to the 360/PS3 era or even further back than that and half of the titles from those times are literally 4x cheaper and are just better to play. Sure those games from those era's aren't the most polished and technology has come a long way, but companies need to stop ripping the soul out of games. Every game we play nowadays doesn't need to be a 1080p masterclass with photo realism and heavy story driven bullshit for me to really appreciate what I'm playing. PS. loved the nod to the PS2 at the end, that was great, makes me feel really comfortable that there are people out there still in love with that kind of stuff and aren't just begging for the next new release.

Spidermango that’s fine but this game is very different which could alienate fans. Their interests in gaming may not be spread over the same genres as you as the hack in slash genre of the original and the action adventure genre of the new GOW aren’t connected. It can, by definition, alienate a fan (though not necessarily) since it doesn’t account for why they loved the originals to begin with. So a fan that doesn’t happen to like the new style will be turned off. Kinda like if uncharted became a dedicated platformer: only fans who happen to be platformer fans will like it but not every uncharted fan is a platformer fan.
@GAnafisMER
6 жыл бұрын
Callinater well then I'd have to say the game was improperly marketed to them because the game is very much a hack and slash and contains many of the elements that made the original great(while keep thing things fresh). Gow went through 6 games with nearly the same gameplay before this one and you don't think it was starting to get stale? They even tried spicing it up by adding mp in ascension. This game brilliantly reinvented itself in a way that you don't often see. It does all that while drawing in new fans, on top of being polished and not having all the things modern gamers have been crying about. That's why it's getting praise. And as a fan of the original games, it didn't alienate me (or most gow fans, in fact the gow fans will be the ones that enjoy this the most, not the newcomers).
@callinater6133
6 жыл бұрын
Spidermango I know what you mean but when you change a formula it’s not going to sit right with some fans. Problems with the original were related to a lack of challenge, a one dimensional protagonist which the devs tried to present as something more and other things. Devs should try to be as delicate as possible when changing a formula. You could end up risking creating a divided fanbase which has hurt franchises like sonic. It’s best to focus on improving and freshening up a formula and fixing only what needs to be fixed so a possible identity crisis doesn’t surface. Sure a majority of fans probably enjoy it but that’s because it’s a playstation game with a playstation fanbase. A lot of the PlayStation fanbase like games like these which are cinematic, have deep stories and what not. So I guess in a way they’re lucky but it’s still not a practice id encourage.
@GAnafisMER
6 жыл бұрын
Callinater considering gow is a playstation franchise, if majority of playstation fanbase is happy with the game id say they're doing their job and remained faithful to the series (which they have and as a fan of the series I can tell you that wholeheartedly). If you're talking about it seeping into elsewhere, I don't think that's relevant for this game because it didn't fall I to that trapping. I liked the old tomb raider games but the new ones is just an uncharted clone. That's a bad reboot in my eyes but this was faithful. And I still dont by the naysayers of this game dismissing it as a cinematic experience. Again if you actually play the game youd realize there's infinitely more gameplay than cutscenes. This isn't tlou or uncharted. There's no loading times however they disguise loading big areas by having characters walk or row their boat through a passage and a lot of dialogue happens during those load times. Is that somehow objectively worse than stage selects and loading screens? The story isn't also unable to have fun as this video implies. In fact they play off of how serous Kratos is by contrasting him with the other characters. And inturn also makes him appear more badass when he does something badass. I love dmc4 I really do. But that game has way worse enemy variety and dogshit structure the makes it a chore to playthrough. It's saved by how fun it is to play in the bloody palace (and the new characters in the se). Gow spends effort to make a good story and setting on top of their combat and somehow its horrible? Because half way through the game they didn't mirror itself around and slap a new character with the same exact bosses? I know it's not a fair comparison but come on. He probably loves dmc4 but this game is the bane of the genre apparently. There's times when can be a contrarion. This game also has flaws that can be discussed. The ones he bitches about in this video are not the issue, it's his own

@@model-t6020 I'm certainly annoyed I don't dispute that, you can call it what you want, it doesn't invalidate my position. When the latest Call of Duty comes out and sucks I don't care because I had no attachment to the series, it might be worse than God of War 4 but I doesn't annoy me as much. If I'd wanted to hate God of War 4 then it wouldn't bother me, it's precisely because I wanted it to be amazing that I was disappointed. And for reference, if you care, the "humour" I was referring to is found in the introductions of the dwarf brothers, annoying, shit humour and characters that real Kratos would have killed for their insolence or forced them to improve his weapons then killed (this is a guy who killed man for the key around his neck if you can remember, assuming you've actually played the real God of War games because a lot of the "fans" haven't played anything before the most recent one) and don't use the tired "but character development he's better now he's older" because that isn't how it works really and this right at the start of the game, "character development" happening in between games that we can't see is lazy writing and a case of telling not showing (see Kratos good now) which is crap. Like I say, it's precisely because I cared so much that I feel so bad about what is a functionally average game 6 or 7 out of 10 with a average to bad story, receiving constant praise and perfect review scores, high sales; because now I know that not only will the next one be like it (which I won't like therefore) but it will spread like cancer through the gaming industry as other series scramble to imitate GOW4 in order to share some of the success.

Unlike Brit I'm actually enjoying the new GoW, however once I started doing the optional "super" bosses and optional worlds (which includes glorious challenges like kill 20 enemies without taking a single hit) the flaws with the camera and other stuff in regards to the combat became even more apparent (actually this shows up in the main story with the elf enemies, especially in the boss gauntlet Brit mentioned when you fight 2 of the elf boss types at once), I mean when you have teleporting bosses with this camera (that indicator doesn't help much for this), and one that even summons minions, you get the idea, you'll really be fighting with the camera more than the enemies. The ending of this video hit me pretty hard. I don't have a problem with games that focus on being "cinematic" and telling a story through minimal interaction. Those games aren't for me, but they are great for a lot of people, and that's cool. The thing is, I feel like THOSE games are the ones that are propped up. Its the TLOUs and GoWs of the world that get 10s and heralded as the next step forward for the genre. That's the new hot stuff. And with games becoming so expensive to make, the number of big-budget titles for a more "niche" audience looking for just some good video games instead of "immersive cinematic experiences" is becoming smaller and smaller. It was like being a shooter fan in 2007 when CoD4 took the world by storm and EVERY multiplayer game from then on had these dumb unlock progression systems. Great video games are still being made, don't get me wrong. Its just a shame that the Alien Isolations and NieR Automatas of the world receive far less critical acclaim than walking segment dad-em-ups.

I'll always come back to this video, it's one of my favorite game reviews ever. I can't agree with it because I've never even played GoW 2018, but it'll always be a great example of a reviewer sticking to his guns and going against the grain to say how he felt about the hot new thing everybody loves. I always really love the ending of this thing where Charlie basically accepts that GoW and its contemporaries may never be for him and instead resolves to just head back to his PS2. Although it's pretty obvious that you don't have to like what everyone else likes, I feel like this video will always be a good reminder to me that it's totally fine to not dig the current trend and be satisfied with doing your own thing. As someone who's spent his entire life trying to understand why I do/don't like certain media, it's a bit alienating when you don't like some kind of critically-acclaimed "masterpiece". So, this review has kind of always meant a lot more to me than someone saying "I hate this game and Devil May Cry is better."

Denis N Am I really? How so? This GoW isn't a bad game, that's not at all what I said. Also, I can't really hate a game I have no intention of playing, because if I have any feels, at all, for this game, is this one: indifference. And let me expand a bit on this situation: do you believe that the developers of this GoW are capable of doing a "father-son story with norse mithology with 'The Last of Us' inspiration and 'Uncharted+Resident Evil 4~6' mechanics" without GoW theme/story? I sure as hell DO believe that they can, but the people calling the shots don't want that. That's why people hate the "oscar-baits". They COULD be something original and full of surprises, but instead they went with "let's please the majority and the people giving the awards" and you can feel that it lacks passion.

I jut finished it and honestly i was actually quite impressed by how better the story feels when you experience it yourself. I knew it already from youtube on release, but now on pc i came out the other end with an overall positive impression, while also being able to agree that combat in this is, putting it extremely mildly, an afterthought. But i really enjoy more thoughtful approach to Kratos's character, mixing up of mythologies, and frankly flawless voice work by some of those actors. This direction for GoW does not overwrite or invalidate original games, it builds on top, so it's a bit weird to see everyone wanting "that good ol stuff" back when there was frankly more than enough of it. I really hope they fix at least some fo the combat issues in Ragnarok, cuz if i can enjoy combat in God of fucking War as much as i do in, say, DMC or Souls, it'd actually be superior to the original.

I feel like the people who prop up this game and its story and say that is is a stellar example of how "games are art" should just watch Conan O'Brien's clueless gamer episode of this game where he and Bill Hader talk over all the cutscenes, dislike the father/son relationship, and wonder why they have to wait so long to get to the fights. People who don't play video games aren't impressed with the story, they'll never take games as an art form seriously, so why the fuck does our industry feel the need to dumb down mechanics to appeal to people who will never enjoy games in the first place? Seems like we're all wasting our time trying to prove to our parents: "No mom! Video games are cool! Look at this cutscene!" Now granted, I actually quite liked this game, but purely for what it was. As a person who is also a hack and slash fan, I was disappointed with the lackluster boss fights, and like you, I prioritized cool down times over everything else, because that's the fucking combat. The other stats are just needless number crunching. I loved many moments of this game, and I do like watching a character I grew up with on the PS2 finally develop real emotion and empathy, but did we need to get rid of the fucking jump button to do that? Ah well, I guess I can always go back to playing Wonderful 101 or DMC4 when I want fun combat, hopefully in the next game Kratos remembers he can jump again. EDIT: Wasn't expecting this comment to have this many replies. A lot of people are criticizing my use of Conan and are also claiming I didn't even play the game. First point out of the way; Conan is a comedian, yes I understand he isn't always sincere. But honestly folks, my point with that example was that non-gamers aren't interested. Show the game to a co-worker or friend or family member who thinks the entire hobby is dumb and you will get the same exact response that Conan gave "Oh these cutscenes are too long. This kid is dumb. It's so melodramatic." I personally disagree with these assessments when viewing the game, but that is what a casual audience is going to think. So I don't see the point in trying to pretend we're making something that will show up at the Oscars when it won't, and it ultimately sacrifices fun by restricting the power of many of your magic attacks, removes jumping, has repetitive and boring boss fights, etc. and that's why I made that example (and honestly half of you just hated that example because you said that Bill Hader was in a movie with Amy Schumer, something I haven't seen nor care about, so nice try trolls). Now as for having not beat the game, all I can really do to prove otherwise is give you my PSN profile name so you can check my stats and see that I have the platinum trophy in this game as well as the majority of titles in the series (it's griffin123456789 yeah it's stupid and long but people had already taken a bunch of the other digits and usernames before I created that account). I'm also starting a New Game + playthrough on the hardest difficulty right now and happen to be enjoying it a fair bit. As I said, I don't dislike this game, but the honeymoon period has worn off and we need to start looking at it with perceptive and critical eyes to make sure it doesn't repeat certain mistakes in the sequel.

At the time I even thought "wow this game's combat is amazing" (granted i came from playing lots of dark souls and stuff like it). Well now, 2 years later, I have finally played Bayonetta 1&2, Nier Replicant & Automata, DMC 5, God of War 3, and some other hack'n'slash type games (Bayonetta managed to finally suck me into the genre) And I really gotta say.... woooow this game's gameplay fell off hard. And replaying it a few months ago I had a hard time enjoying the combat... at all. It's mostly fine when you have 1 boss-type enemy to fight since you can mostly go about your day in good souls-fashion (and i love souls), but man, when you have to fight enemy groups it feels like the game doesn't know what it wants to be, it just doesn't work really well... Anyways, randomly got this video back in my recommended and just thought I'd tell this story. Good video!

It shares the same namesake as the first game because the intent was to bury that game and every other title in the series. Whenever someone searches "God of War" they don't want the 2005 game to appear because they don't feel like it's worthy of recognition, especially over their clearly superior and totally unique new direction. This is obvious when looking at pretty much all of the coverage for this game with the director, developers, and journos treating the past game like garbage because they don't know how else to elevate this vapid and pretentious nonsense other than tearing down what came before.

THIS IS CLEARY AN EVOLUTION, THE BEST IN THE FRANCHISE." IT makes me want to punch both the careless developers and "fans" that don't care and think they can judge a series they never played or will.

@synysterdawn8913

@@thatitalianlameguy2235 The game was originally showcased as God of War 4 when they already had their "not a game script" written and ready to go, so that doesn't make any sense. Changing the name to steal the original namesake can only possibly serve two purposes: 1) to confuse anybody who is aware of the series' history and paying attention as to whether or not the game is supposed to be a sequel or reboot, which may soften the blow of how the new game is completely unrecognizable in everything but name if it's the latter, and 2) to keep anybody who isn't familiar with the series' history and not paying too close attention from finding those old games when they just search "god of war" online. Also, like, he already restarted his life off-screen. Dude has recovered from a suicide attempt, traveled to a different realm, stayed there for who knows how long, started a new family, and then the game starts when his second wife is dead and their son is like 12 years old. Regardless of how the game was ultimately structured in terms of gameplay and story, it was still a continuation of the events from the rest of the series, so naming it just "God of War" is a deliberate choice to obfuscate the series' legacy, otherwise they would've just stuck with "God of War 4" or just about anything else that doesn't share the exact namesake of the original.

Here's my biggest question for this generation of games, and more specifically reboots and revivals: when a game goes so much off of the beaten path of what the game originally was, to the point where it isn't even considered to be in the same genre or even the same feel of the originals, at what point is it still considered to be part of those series? Because I think God of War 4 is a great, probably fantastic game, but I don't think it's a good God of War game. If anything, had it been it's own original IP, I think it actually would've helped it be a better indicator of how good the game could stand on its own. Perfect example: look at Jak Z, a potential reboot to the Jak and Daxter series. Naughty Dog wanted to make Jak into a more realistic character, make the look and feel of the game more around the set pieces and character interactions more than ever, and remove the platformer elements in order to make a more story-driven world like Uncharted before it. At some point, though: they gave up and said "this wasn't Jak and Daxter" and threw away the idea of adding it in, because by that point, the characters and world looked completely different from what they had been. This reboot was then reworked into The Last of Us. Something to think about.

money. They abuse existing IPs and their fanbases to get people hyped and/or talking, and so they don't have to be creative and can rehash mechanics/characters/settings/themes/concepts, then add their own crappy modern spin on it all that they predict will appeal to a wider audience.

EyeSpy I’ve come to terms with that years ago, even more so after the VA for Samos passed away. Had you asked me years ago, I would’ve loved a Jak 4 or Jak reboot. But considering the current trends in the AAA market these days, I’d rather have no Jak and Daxter than to have something with the face of Jak and Daxter. A wolf in sheep’s clothing, if you will. ...That being said, I think the most I’d be happy for is for a remake of Jak in the same vein as Ratchet, Crash, and Spyro. Then I’d be satisfied.

Yeah, but you can look at the Resident Evil series and it's done multiple revolutions on what it is. RE7 is definitely not trying to appeal to people who liked RE6, but it's still got the Resident Evil name on it. It's a really weird issue when a series reinvents itself and I don't really have an answer for it.

Thank you for an honest review, I'm kind of shocked so many reviewers are missing the simple rules of 'game design' when they praise a game like this with 10/10 scores. I like this game and its very good looking, plays nicely, but I don't love it and find myself getting annoyed by little things this game persistently hits you with as you progress. Such as the loading zones (lifting a rock, walking through a hidden path, etc), climbing mechanics (press 'O' to jump), unlocking hidden chests for health and rage boosts (couldn't have us complete missions or use exp for some of those huh game?), simple enemy AI (very predictable attacks that don't change with high difficulty) and the constant interruptions by the story with unskippable cutscenes, talking and walking... so much walking. Oh and the framerate is not good, maybe the standard 30fps mode is alright, but the performance mode hits and misses frequently depending on where you are in the game while you fight and walk around. All of that more than likely due to the "seamless one shot" (no cuts) design the game is based around. Now for the good :) There are some amazing set pieces that make you feel awesome (I won't spoil them because they are wonderful, and I really wish there was more of them in the game), there are some decent side missions worth doing (such as hunting the Valkaries) and the story is done very well (lots of lore which I personally enjoy). Top marks to the studio for taking things in a different direction and not just rehashing the same thing as before. For me its an easy 8/10. Its well worth playing if you have a PS4 and despite the issues I named, its still a very enjoyable story experience (like Uncharted or The Last of Us). For people who enjoy good hack and slash game with good mechanics and replay-ability... I'd say just watch God of War online and save your money. Wait for game designed around mechanics first and not film techniques.

Been trying to find a bad review of GOW but everyone is saying that this game is amazing, and any normal person should like it. Finally, I watch your review and you literally described each of my points so thank you very much for that! Yes it's a great looking game making for a highly cinematic and engaging experience but I was really underwhelmed by it. I thought it was repetitive and not that exciting. The combat was a huge let down as it doesn't capture what GOW is about: a fast paced badass combat. And where the fuck are the real bosses? I was looking forward to kick that dragon's ass but it was so boring, can someone take me back to the Chronos fight please? where are the monsters? I like that they tried to make a more mature and deeper game, on that they succeded but gosh, what a drag! and that final boss was so disappointing! People are so eager to defend it though, I traded the game in and the guy from that game shop literally had a go at me for not liking the game. If your definition of gaming is carrying wood chunks whilst spending most of the game educating your child, perhaps you should have sticked to the sims, dude.

A pretty honest and accurate review. The lock-on system frustrated me as well, any enemy that goes off screen breaks the lock-on. The dodge mechanic is painfully unresponsive at times. The difficulty is completely unbalanced, fighting the last valkyrie is infinitely harder than the final boss of the campaign. Higher difficulties give enemies absurd amounts of HP and allow them to OHKO you all day long. Plus this game has you spending more time solving puzzles than actually fighting. And not being able to use my entire move set at any given time REALLY bothers me and makes this game feel too much like an RPG. Not a horrible game but for a God of War title I'm unimpressed.

Thanatos388 He's not wrong. MGS V is an unbalanced mess. Base building and most of the weaponry are completely unnecessary. Missions are repetitive, the story is horrible and barely existent. It's not unplayable or downright broken, but it's far from being great or even polished.

Thanatos388 How can you say the game is not unfinished when they literally cut the ending and an entire chapter off of it?
@Tamacat388
6 жыл бұрын
Winnetou64 Most weapons are unnecessary and unbalanced. But they are fun to use. Just like...well...literally every fucking MGS game since 2. They all have the tranq gun as the best gun with no use for any of the other weapons. The only difference is that V does more to make the tranq less effective than any other MGS game. Using different weapons is still fun. Missions are only repetitive if you play the game the same. So thats really your own fault just as much as it is the games fault since you really have no incentive to not just tranq everyone. Again...lack of incentive to use your arsenal is consistent to every MGS game but for some odd reason that only matters to you now. Story is horrible is subjective so Ill give you that. Barely existent? That's just a stupid meme that needs to die. V has more cutscenes than 1, 3, and PW. Venom talks just about as much as any other Snake does in the previous games, the only actual difference is that he is quieter and doesn't ask stupid questions every 5 seconds. That's just about the only actual difference beyond the lack of optional codecs. Im not saying V is some masterpiece. It definitely feels rushed and the Eli subplot was lazily handled. But saying it has no story or is just so incredibly and obviously confirmed unfinished is stupid. And most who complain that the gameplay is bad either suck at it or just use the same weapons in every mission making that boredom your own fault.

Solar Juice I guess it depends on the game. But yes that narrative seems very superficial. As an art form games should embrace what they do differently from the other art forms, and that is gameplay and how dynamic they are. Not story since books and films already got that base covered. Not saying a serious story is bad but it shouldn’t be the highest priority for most games.
@solarjuice4985

That's the whole point. Saying things such as "gaming needs to grow up, you guys!" just goes to show how clueless people saying this are. Games have grown. A LOT. We have seen many games evolve in terms of mechanics and their use of technology, the attention to detail in the old MGS games, the outstanding AI in FEAR, hell even the mechanical depth of games seen as more "juvenile" such as DMC or literally any fighting game ever. Games should be held first and foremost by the things that MAKES THEM GAMES. You can say a certain game has an amazing story and good CGI work... but you could use the same things to describe a movie. What does the game do to actually push the medium? And for the record, using a generic gameplay formula borrowed by other franchises while covering everything in pretty graphics and a "cinematic" story for the exact purpose of appealing to the lowest common denominator is not making games "grow up". In fact, it's the opposite.
