God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is apparently from the 16th Century (not quite mediaeval but close enough). Early versions had the lyrics as "Sit you merry gentlemen". The historic meaning of the phrase God rest you merry is 'may God grant you peace and happiness'; the Oxford English Dictionary records uses of this phrase from 1534 onwards. It appears in Shakespeare's 1599 play "As You Like It"
I've arranged it in G minor, in CGDGAD tuning. There are quite a few versions so I've tried to encapsulate both the more mournful and the happier sound as the tune progresses. It starts off in 4/4 and ends in 6/8.
Clips are from Scrooge (1951) released as 'A Christmas Carol' in the USA, one of my all time favourite films..
