No Catholic is obliged to believe that most people will end up in Hell. It is a common opinion among many theologians, but not a definitive teaching. I think it is probable that many will be in Hell, but I think that there will be even more in Heaven. However this is a matter of opinion, since the Church didn't settle the issue.

After leaving the church several years ago, the language and rhetoric of religions has become so alien to me. The reminder that I used to hold these sorts of beliefs is often baffling. I can proudly say that I no longer think all people are horrible and deserve eternal torture for finite 'sins'. People are incredible. Look around us at the vast wealth of knowledge that we have accrued, the nations we've built, the progress we've made, the horrific tragedies and seemingly insurmountable crises we have overcome. The fact that we are still here, born in the greatest of generations; living, breathing, fighting for every inch of ground in the battle of existence, is testament to the billions of individuals that have come before us, and a beacon of hope for the generations hence. This idea that we are all inherently awful, disgusting, vile beings is one that I am very glad I no longer hold to. People are capable of far greather things than religion admits, and I look forward to the bright morning where we as a species can wake up and no longer hold such condescending and vindictive views toward each other.
@aerobicsalmon415

I understand what you mean but I see it in a different light. Religion has also pushed the progress of humanity (especially Christianity) in many ways and many have overcome such crises in life because of it. Religious orders built and developed communities, schools and hospitals where there was none, banks and pawnshops were created, art in the Western world progressed through religious patrons, many faithful laity are scientists and even priests. Even from a psychological point of view religion has impacted the community to try to do better for each other if practiced faithfully. The idea of being inherently sinful and in need of a savior creates a profound humility and calls us to always strive for better. The martyrs and saints were even able to give their lives for people that hated them. It's something not natural to human beings to love those who hate us. I don't know of any other secular human phenomenon which will create that kind of love or humility within a person. The Church has not been perfect as we humans are not perfect but it calls us to a higher standard. Much strife and suffering has also been caused by the Church, I do not doubt that but I see that Jesus is still at the helm even if we the sailors are not up to par. Before truly living out my faith, I thought I was a pretty good person because I am quite agreeable and I give to charity sometimes. Only now do I see how awful I've been to workmates that annoyed me, to give up quickly from helping when I thought people were asking too much of me, I didn't give others a chance when they had a different opinion, I couldn't forgive those who hurt me, I didn't know how to love difficult people, I judge fairly quickly, I didn't want to add extra burden to myself by helping others, I thought I was the best at most things I did and I put others down. Why would I feel the need to change on my own if I had nothing to gain from it? If not after feeling God's presence and love in my life I would never have changed. I was actually so condescending and vindictive when I didn't hold these Christian views.

I get really troubled by technicalities. For instance, it seems, from what I've read, that nearly everything is a mortal sin, not venial. So ok, you go to confession and repent and you can be forgiven and healed. I get that. But what about the in between time ?I don't know what the church really teaches but I've heard that if you're in mortal sin that God does not hear or regard you until you go to confession. If you worried about frequently being in mortal sin bc most sins are mortal and you can't get to confession every single day, then you are tormented by days and weeks of thinking God isn't hearing you and nothing you do is of any benefit to your soul whatsoever. ( I think I heard the first part of that from Fr. Ripperger and the second part I read in one of St. Theresa of Avila's books.) Everyone says God is merciful but no one talks about the nitty gritty of where you stand with God during each of these stages- how He looks at you or even if he looks at you at all. I know this all sounds very obsessive but I take what I hear from reliable sources very seriously and it matters to me. Anybody got anything?
@slamping
3 жыл бұрын
Ok, the conditions for mortal sin are these: 1. Full Knowledge that the act (thought, word or omission) was contrary to God’s will (sinful) is possessed by the offender; 2. Full Consent (with intentionality; i.e.,not forced) is held by the one committing the sin; 3. Grave Matter (anything under the Ten Commandments and the Precepts of the Church) is the circumstances of the sin. Not to belabor the point, but, there is a difference in grave matter between stealing $10 from a friend and stealing $10,000 from an orphanage. These are from the examination of conscience from bulldogcatholic.org: bulldogcatholic.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/a-detailed-catholic-examination-of-conscience-2nd-ed.pdf. For more of an in depth knowledge into your personal life, please, please, PLEASE get a spiritual director! They help soooo much! I’m telling you from experience. They help you so much in how to discern and truly understand the precepts of the church. Please remember this too, Jesus died for you out of complete love for you. If in your heart of hearts you truly want to repent of your sins and keep coming back to the confessional, He only awaits you to receive His mercy. Remember the prodigal son! For more information about the depth of his mercy, go to the Diary of St. Faustina. Her writings are approved by the church and tell you a great deal about how much He wants you and all of humanity to receive His mercy. If you want to go deeper into what the church teaches, take a look at the Gospels, the Catechism, and even go through Matt’s channel! The interview with Fr. Boniventure and Sr. Miriam James may help bring you consolation.

I resonated with this video so much! Spoke directly to my heart! I just went to confession last week, for the first time in over a year, and confessed a sin I have had on my soul for 7 years. It was my biggest shame. I went with the intention of only confessing that sin, so I couldn't hide it in a list, and I came right out and said it the second I got in that confessional, without using fluffy language to make myself feel better. When I say it was the biggest relief I have felt in a very long time, it's an understatement. And I feel so much closer to God. I have not returned to that sin, and I intend with my whole heart and soul to keep it that way for the rest of my life. Excellent video, and it really spoke to my experience! Thank you!

As a former Protestant who learned that the Catholic Church was the fullness of truth and converted to Catholicism a couple years ago I have struggled immensely with scrupulosity, not in the sense of actions (well from time to time) but sometimes it can even be intrusive thoughts that at times can be overwhelming. The beauty of the sacrament of confession and the overall knowledge of Gods mercy is so beautiful. Loved this video.

The irony of scrupulosity is that it makes you overthink everything and that makes it more probable to fall for sin than not thinking about sinning. Instead of thinking constantly about all the sins you could possibly commit, just think of all the good deeds you could do. This way of thinking helped me.

COWBOY LOGIC 101: "... I would throw myself, my heart broken with sorrow, into the arms of my Savior..." Yes!!! Exactly. And in the same vein as this broadcast, I would just like to mention that in all of Sacred Scripture, Old Testament and New, anytime a believer prays, he or she always, without even one single exception, prays DIRECTLY to God the Father. Check it out for yourself. Here are just a couple of examples: "... your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come..." Matthew 6:8-9 And... "But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you." Matthew 6:6 And, "Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16 "GO TO GOD WITH CONFIDENCE" In all of Scripture you will see, this is his desire (command), that we come directly to Him. ❤️

"After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite: "My wrath is kindled against you and against your two friends; for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has. Now therefore take seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will accept his prayer not to deal with you according to your folly; for you have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has done." ST. POPE JOHN PAUL II: “By forgiving his executioners, Jesus showed he is not the accuser of the guilty but rather their advocate and intercessor. Jesus’ words of forgiveness - ‘Father, forgive them for they know not what they do’ - were spoken in circumstances of the greatest hatred and cruelty. Jesus forgives His adversaries immediately, even as their hostility continues. Jesus is the defender, not the accuser of the guilty, because He knows that many can be less guilty than it appears, or one thinks. For this reason, he taught his followers not to judge others. The mercy Jesus asked for His executioners is extended to all humanity.”

Don't forget that God can even give us our innocence back - He doesn't just have the ability to cancel the debt sin creates, but can even undo it in a sense, and with it the shame it brings on us as well. We should pray for this grace, seek out the various indulgences God generously offers us each day, and hope that God makes us new and fresh again. Also, the fact He offers us forgiveness means He thinks we are worth forgiving - the very reason He does this is because He loves us, and to love someone is to consider them worth loving and still valuable.
@johncassani6780

This is very true, and it is something very much worth praying for, but it is something extraordinary when it does happen. Shame for past sins is to be expected, and is not guaranteed to be removed when one is absolved, which does not reduce the greatness of God’s grace in any way. Shame, if it does not bring about discouragement, can be used by God for great good. But, it is wonderful when God takes it away.
@AbsurdScandal
3 жыл бұрын
@@johncassani6780 Agreed! Shame can also sometimes burry itself a bit more deeply inside of us, so a process of healing may becoe required for that. I know that other spiritual things may take time to heal, but that time itself has purpose and brings about great graces! And then there are plenary indulgences available to us daily, which, though they aren't easy to get depending on how detached one's will is from sins, aren't impossible either, since they are an open possibility for ordinary people. Anyways, we should all pray to God to give us detahcment from sin and heal us in His love!

You really nailed it with this video, I felt the Holy Spirit giving me a deep insight of the Love & Mercy of God. I would add one thing which I think is very important to consider -St. Francis De Sales writes, “It is an abuse to confess any kind of sin, whether mortal or venial, without a will to be rid of it since confession was instituted for no other purpose.” You may be fully aware that you’re going to commit the same sin again because you’ve confessed it in your last ten confessions, but you should resolve with all your strength never to do it again, try to hate the sin by reminding yourself of the evil it causes, and take concrete steps to avoid the occasion for the sin. For example, if you have a certain friend who loves to gossip, think of a few ways to redirect the conversation when it appears to be heading down that path. Without a firm decision and a plan to avoid the sin in the future, it’s hard to say that you have the purpose of amendment that confession requires. Never feel hopeless with any repeated sin; God will help you through the power of the Holy Spirit; if one's weakness is great his power is even greater -2 Corinthians 12:10

Well said! I’m publishing a weekly KZitem video on episodes from the life of Don Bosco, entitled ST JOHN BOSCO by JOE ZAMMIT. In this series I’m narrating events and miracles from the splendid life of Don Bosco. St John Bosco used to perform a miracle almost every day, through the intercession of Mary Help of Christians. From the lives of saints we can learn how to love God more and draw closer to him. Thank you

rightly said, dear Matt, HE WILL, but of course if the one concerned to have HIS WILL come over him as infinite mercy, seeks, asks, and expects mercy to be his

I have a problem with this theology. Is it not possible that the idea of hell as eternal suffering evolved during time? you talk of the mercy of God, yes posit a being that will damn people to eternal torment...that is not an act of love, and indeed a love that is conditional on fear. How many people who glibly talk of hell, almost seem to relish in it's horror; how many people have ever experienced such a place for even an hour?

Do you forget? God is not merely a God of love and mercy, but of justice, and wrath. For as many as have rejected his free gift, that many shall he be forced by his own righteousness to judge and punish according to his law. Would you prefer he let such names as Genghis Khan, Hitler, or Ted Bundy enter into paradise, unpunished for their crimes?

I have a sincere Question. As a catechumen I cannot go to confession. Am I in Gods mercy? I confess my sins daily before God and make An act of contrition and love every Day. I pray 4 Times a Day and almost daily the Rosary. I really look forward to my baptism, but sometimes I worry. Can anyone help me out, Am I doing enough?

If you somehow die before your formal baptism, rest assured that by the looks of it you'll surely receive a Baptism by desire in death. So you're good 😎

What if someone recieved communion while conscious of a mortal sin? Will God forgive him?
@XCathedra

No you have to go to confession first. It's a mortal sin to receive the holy eucharist when you are conscious of a mortal sin.

"'Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,' says Christ, 'and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.' This seems to enjoin a crime or a vice; it is therefore a figure, enjoining that we should have a share in the sufferings of our Lord, and that we should retain a sweet and profitable memory of the fact that His flesh was wounded and crucified for us." -Saint Augustine, On Christian Doctrine Book 3 Chapter 16.
