I tried to get into this game, but I just really couldn't. It might have been I just play too much mortal kombat, but thus game just felt off somehow

As some one who jumps between a lot of different fighting games, there's definitely always an adjustment period and it's probably worse swapping to/from NRS games. The block button and dial-a-combo systems are just very distinct from what most other 2D games use. Part of it might also be that anime fighters like Strive tend to have extremely distinct character gimmicks? I've not played a ton of modern NRS games, but I don't know that I've seen any character disparities on par with like Potemkin versus Chipp. That combined with the high mobility can certainly be a lot to take in when you're just getting into anime fighters. While I love Strive a lot, if you have a group of friends you can con into buying a fighting game - or don't mind hopping into discords to play against randos - Guilty Gear Accent Core +R and BlazBlue Centralfiction are both regularly on sale for very cheap and are much purer distillations of the subgenre than Strive is. Bit of a "dive into the deep end" kinda thing but sometimes you need full immersion for everything to really click. If you enjoy Injustice you might find BBCF somewhat familiar - the basic button setup in that series is also Light/Medium/Heavy/Gimmick, although gimmicks in BBCF are generally more pronounced than Injustice. Atrocitus has a funny cat button, Carl needs to constantly keep a robot lady moving around the screen along with himself Alternatively Melty Blood Actress Again is available for free with rollback over on play.meltyblood.club if you're willing to type in ip addresses and stuff to connect to lobbies. If you end up enjoying that one, it has a new entry called Type Lumina - which isn't as cheap but all its DLC characters are free
