Just ordered the V1-S. For me, the user interface makes all the difference. I own two V860iis and I still struggle to figure out the menu system and how to change things quickly without Googling it - so much so that I leave them at home and take my AD200 pros with me instead. Being able to change settings quickly in a run and gun situation is worth the extra money - in my opinion - and the V1 will give me that, control my AD200s, help me focus in low light and etc. etc. It's worth it for a lot of reasons.

The quick lock works fine for me. I like this speedlight, especially with the extra accessory pack. It works well as a fill with daylight when using high-speed sync, and it will illuminate low light shots up to about 50 feet at full power and 110 mm zoom. For a speedlight it does a good job and it's light and easy to carry. And the price is right. My Nikon SB 500 cost $600, and no excessory kit is available. And, no hot shoe problems.

@Wes Perry - I've just picked up one of these for my Sony A7R III and what I've noticed on the latest firmware is that you can have the 'modelling' light turn off whent he flash fires (before this remained on) - none of the reviews of the V1 I've seen even mention this.. in fact some say it remains on with the flash.. to turn it off when the flash fires - all you have to do is turn it on and then press the first soft button on the left hand side with 'MODEL' up above it.. this then places a lightning bolt icon in the bulb on the display and when your flash fires the modelling light turns off. If you want the light to stay on constantly with the flash then you press the soft button again to remove the 'flash' symbol from the bulb. :)

I bought 3 of these and they don't last at all. 2/3 are broken already and the last working one is a bit wonky. First one stopped working right after guarantee ended. The hot shoe clamp ring stuck to the camera and when I got it off you could not use the clamp anymore. After a little while that V1 stopped turning on. Second one got a faulty flash tube. The third one does still work but occasionally it's in a bad mood and doesn't want to do it's job and the flash tube is full of these black spots so I'm not sure how long that will last. I do use them a lot but mostly one at a time so it's still annoying that they break so easily.

The other stopped firing entirely, suspected a faulty trigger coil. It is not a user replaceable part. Apparently MANY folks have suffered this issue. I tried replacing the flash tube just to be sure it wasn't that... no good. I'll still buy another one to replace it, but just be aware, these things do have some weaknesses. Probably good to buy a backup to have on hand in case one goes out on you during a shoot.

I read that H200R give the same "effect" at full power than V1 (measured with flashmeter in same condition). Do you have any advice?
@WesPerry
3 жыл бұрын
I would say that the H200R head is actually a little smoother in light output than the V1. If you mean the same power output, the H200R will give more power, but since the V1 is a zoom head, it can measure the same or brighter depending on what distance you're metering from. But that's about light focus, not light output.

I notice this flash alters in colour output between shots when you use burst mode. My 6D is only 6fps and I have tested the flash at 1/128 with white balance on manual on a scene that is in total darkness without a flash. Yeah, that’s been the case with Sony for a long time now. A lot of focus assist beams are infrared, and mirrorless sensors can’t see infrared (phase detect DSLR modules can), so Sony didn’t even put the capability to interface with it well in their hotshoe configuration. (It’s more a Sony fail than it is a Godox fail). Godox did find a way around this for Some of their devices. The X1T can create a visible red grid focus light, but only when the camera is in AF-S...which mine never is in those situations, as AF-S is so much worse in low light than AF-C (on these cameras).

Wes, do you use auto WB when shooting godox strobes or you set it up to 5600? I'm asking because I'm getting very warm WB when using auto and only using grey card or setting it to 5600 fix the problem. I read that it's the godox transmitter XPROs problem and it can be fixed taping other hotshoe connectors except middle one. I hope Godox can fix it in firmware update.
@WesPerry
4 жыл бұрын
Most of the time that I'm using strobes, it's in uncontrolled environments (wedding receptions, prep, outdoors, etc etc), so 5600 doesn't apply, and I just use AWB and fix it in post. When I'm doing a controlled portrait session or something, I'll either eyeball it and lock it down after the first shot or two, or use an XRite white card (I just lost mine. UGH. So expensive!) to nail it down first. Because even when you're totally controlling the light, unless you're in a perfectly white or perfectly matte black room, the walls and windows and floor and everything else in the room will create light reflections and alter the overall white balance of the photo. So if you have a yellowish hardwood floor, it'll come back more yellow, etc. All that being said, I have heard that the V1 is a little yellower than other flashes. Probably due to the extra diffusion needed in the compact round head design. I actually hadn't heard anything about the transmitter myself. Maybe if I spent more time in the studio (very little) I would care more about that ;) haha

Nice follow-up video, thanks for that! I have the V1c flash and find that the interface is much easier to use as a master to control other remote flashes compared to the TT685c menu which I find confusing. As for the many comments I've seen saying the bottom of the V1 hotshoe breaks easily, is that applicable for the Canon version flashes or only for Sony versions or all manufacturer versions? I'm under the impression that the hotshoe is only breaking on the Sony version.

There’s definitely a colour difference between them as you said. Since I generally only use such flashes in rather uncontrolled lighting to begin with, I can’t say it’s really practically noticeable. Yeah some of them vary. Also depends on whether you’re using the bulb or flash/fresnel heads. They also tend to slowly discolour with age and use. I only notice the colour shift in my AD100 Pro, though. Aside from that all mine are reasonably close (and I have a lot of them! Lol)
