I have an enormous soft spot for Godrick as Tragic Character. He's an underdog -- a "runt" among demigods -- who grew to power through his development of "grafting" his stunted flesh to other flesh. He ultimately became a monster when he turned this divine gift for flesh-grafting into something ignoble and oppressive, rather than something that could better the general population in the form of medical care etc. Instead of granting limbs to the broken and healing to the sick, he just collected the best of everything for himself, and kept the empty remainder in stasis with equally empty sentries. He could have achieved truly greater heights with a bit of charity and long-term thought, but instead thought only of himself and his scions.

Interesting point. He could have gained fame comparable to Miquella's, as a benevolent healer demigod if he used his talents wiser. Instead, he obsessed over Godfrey's strength.

I LOVE this understanding of Godrick because it shows ER's nuance. the problem with Godrick isn't that he was born "weak" and wanted to be powerful - it's that he gained power by harming others. I just woke up from a nap so I don't exactly have the brain cells to fully explain my thoughts rn, but ER could so easily have had a lot of anti-disabled narrative in it. the scarlet rot is a degenerative chronic illness, after all, and omens are essentially just people with birth defects. but ER doesn't get lazy and go "sick people and ugly people bad", there's a lot more to the narrative that makes it really interesting also, someday I will fully flesh out my theory that Radagon and Marika is a trans narrative because to me, the evidence is very obvious, I just haven't taken the time to fully dive into it yet

There's also a parallel between the Fire Giant's "golden age" and the modern trolls that are believed to be descendants of them. Which, Godrick also grafts a troll's torso onto himself.
@Odinsday
2 жыл бұрын
The lore in the game states that the Fell God the giants worshipped was inside of every last one of the giants. This is obviously the case with the Fire Giant, as he rips off his own leg as an offer to summon the One Eyed Fell God one final time to defeat the tarnished, however I think that the trolls may have inherited this from the giants as well. Granted, it may have been a weaker power than their ancestors as the Fell God's influence fizzled out over eons, but a power like that would have still been a huge problem for Marika and the Golden Order. I think the reason why every troll has a gapping hole in their stomachs was because Marika and Godfrey systematically tore the Fell God's influence out of their bodies and for some, like the trolls who moved the carriages, placed gravestones inside as a way to make transportation easier, but also seemingly as a cruel joke that showed their god was truly gone. It makes the story of the giants and the trolls all the more sad, and makes Godrick's decision to graft a troll torso to his body all the more ironic.

I see Godrick as all of From Softs fears in the form of a character. He takes all of his strengths from other warriors Out of fear and envy for greater warriors What if people saw Elden ring as this abomination of previous great ideas being grafted together to make something inauthentic? Godrick is nostalgic of the glory days and is pathetic compared to it. What if people see this game the way people see Godrick? A weakling compared to his lineage. And his last line about going to a place bathed in rays of gold. If Elden ring failed to live up to its lineage, at least it will still be hidden within the golden shade of the better games. The glory days of From Software. To overcome this fear they made a character about it and made him one of the first bosses to be defeated and the player and from software move on the future. We shouldn’t kill the past We should kill our insecurities and secure our future.

Grafting is a constant theme. The Erdtree is grafted to the Great Tree. The Crucible resulted in the confusion (the grafting of disparate parts) which lead to the beast men and demi humans. The Albinaurics appear to be the result of some kind of combining of the mimic tears and humans. Godwyn is grafted to the roots of the Great Tree and spreads death through his connection. The rot pests may be some sort of combination of humans and... something else. This idea of combining beings to create some kind of hybrid is all over the game.

I think that Kenneth Haight still reveres Godfrey so, not because he was so mighty that his status as a tarnished was ignored, but because people weren't aware that Godfrey is a tarnished at all. Much like Morgott who fooled his people as the "Veiled Monarch". People might know that "Hoarah Loux, Chieftain of the Badlands" (as the narrator puts it) was a tarnished, but only Godfrey and his fellow exiled men were there to see Marika take away their grace. And not telling the world how the great hero of the Golden Lineage became graceless so she could marry herself, is not only smart but also just a very Marika thing to do

While the parallels you highlighted make totally sense and are absolutely accurate, I don't think when Godrick was alluding to the dragon as a "trueborn heir" and a "kindred" that this fall from grace that you describe was the "kindredness" he was referring to. Although I also don't mean to suggest that that was what you were saying, you just highlighted the parallels between the golden lineage and the dragon lineage. But that doesn't necessarily answer why Godrick would describe the dragon as a "trueborn heir" and a "kindred" from Godrick's perspective (at least if I didn't miss something in the video), as Godrick, proud and self-important as he is, would never acknowledge his obvious fall from grace. Quite the contrary, as he insists that he is "the lord of all that is golden". Therefore I think that the kinship Godrick mentions between him (or the golden lineage in total) and the dragon (or the dragon lineage in total) is in fact their shared origin of gold. Because after all as the Gravel Stone Seal item description reveals: Gravel Stone, the scales of the dragons, and lightning, the power of the dragons, are both imbued with gold. This origin of gold to Godrick gives the dragons (even the pathetic descendants of the dragons) same as him and his lineage inherently an elevated status above everyone else. That's why Godrick describes the dragon as a "trueborn heir", because he also believes that he himself because of his golden lineage is a "trueborn heir" entitled to the throne of Elden Lord, whereas all the other demigods are in some way not "pure" - none of them are of the Godfrey-Marika line and Morgott's golden lineage is defiled by his accursed blood as an Omen. Of course Godrick alludes only to their shared origin of gold and their consequential rightful claim as lords when talking about his kinship with dragons, completely missing out that modern dragons lost their scales and the power of lightning, same as his divine blood is sorely diluted as Finger Reader Enia says. That's the irony you highlighted. But I wanted to draw more attention to Godricks thoughts with this comment, assuming this even makes sense.

Uh, I wouldn't have picked up on a lot of that for a long while, Godrick and the dragons sharing a Kindredness. However I always figured that Godricks Grafting obsession was inspired by the flaws in the Golden Orders practices fundementalist practices. Someone at somepoint mentioned an idea about the souls and bodies of the people being fed to the tree in order for all life to one day merge as one. In my mind Godrick was just taking that to another literal sense and if he had it his way, would probably have amassed everyone in to one horrific single body eventually... Though, if I recall as well, Radagon was more responsible for that development in the Golden Orders ideaology, so perhaps the time lines dont quiet add up there...

I am convinced that life force is finite in the lands between. Births are division of the universal ONE, not multiplication. Twins share souls. Shadows share souls. The dead are absorbed for power, grafted together, or recycled through the roots. Offshoots of main souls, like millicent. Dragons and giants growing more and more dilute with time and division. Omens are flawed souls, and those flaws are passed via birth. Marika's first(?) son godwyn was her most perfect, but she has many stillborn or "unwanted" children. Has she run out of life to give? Is the land running out of life to divide?

a hope yet to be realised is that, look at darksouls - it has the stories and lore of the great kingdom but the gameplay fits the fallen kingdom moment in time and I always hoped they could layer on features and mechanics and eventually end up being able to make a game where you can play through those stories, those haydays. even Elden ring plays out after the shattering, after Radahn was driven mad, after Rennala had driven to madness by her loss and fascination with the Amber egg and rebirth. I understand that the mechanics and gameplay structure lends itself more to the fromsoft established formula but the itch those games don't scratch is that story you get from old final fantasy games, where characters build up and crescendo.

Comparing grafting to Serosh is a stretch. The themes don't match. Serosh is a mechanism to control bloodlust to become civilized. Godfrey achieved lord candidacy due to his strength, but needed to become civilized to become lord. Lords must be civilized. The grafting by comparison, is simply a lust for power. Godrick is so desperate to be worthy of the golden lineage in any way he can that he goes to grotesque and immoral lengths to gain power to prove himself. This isn't the same thing as adding something to yourself for discipline.

Seroh's job besides containing his bloodlust, was serving as his adviser too, Seroh was very well recieved figure in the Golden order.
