Kudos to the director finding the right child actress. It's literally a dime a dozen to find the right child who can say things like "Mommy" or "Daddy" without it sounding phoned in or having to rely on just being cute. However, Sae Nagatani as Akiko manages to pull the correct believability to feel like a real child.

Godzilla Minus One was my favorite movie of 2023. I saw it in a theater with a sound system so over-the-top that when Godzilla stepped, it felt like an actual earthquake. It was viscerally terrifying, as if the monster was physically real. Sadly, you don't get that experience from watching it at home, but it's still a masterpiece of moviemaking. Think about it: A subtitled Japanese monster movie was the number one movie in America for a couple of weeks, and only through word-of-mouth. Truly a cinematic marvel.

Godzilla vs Destroya. Godzilla 2000 drives THAT point home with a vengeance. In my mind it is a sequel to Destroya which would….. eh.. watch it with that in mind. Which one had Godzilla and his son(like Akiko) hibernate… with the people leaving, saying something like they’ll finally be left alone? My father, who fought in Korea and Vietnam, in his youth…. was very impacted by the beauty all around him, having grown up in the city. He questioned why humanity would ever choose to fight, destroying what he saw as paradise. “Why would we fight here?” I remember him telling me and my brother about being stationed on a plateau…. and the sky, filled with ice crystals would be often highlighted by rainbows… and how the beauty of the land seemed to defy the horrors of the war…. And even the jungles would fight both sides, with huge thorns, spiders, scorpions…. And how THAT seemed … right. I’ve always taken that attitude with Godzilla… Kong, was killed…. Shot down from society’s pinnacle… Godzilla was kept alive to curb Humanity’s bloodlust and dismissive attitude towards nature.

Every ship and plane you see in this film is historically accurate. Those destroyers and that cruiser did survive the war, all the film did was alter their final fates a bit. Interestingly, the destroyer they were on at the end was known to be lucky, as it and her crew survived many battles without suffering any casualties or meaningful damage--extremely rare for Japan in WWII. Ultimately, she ended up with the Chinese Navy and survived with the Nationalists in Taiwan until the 1970s and there was some debate about making her a museum. Ultimately, she was scrapped along with the others, but not before some of her relics were returned to Japan as a goodwill gesture.

Godzilla Minus One is more of a "spiritual descendent" of the original 1954 Godzilla film. It's actually set in the 1940's which is before the original Godzilla was set. Setting it just after the war helps to emphasize that with the Americans refusing to get involved due to the fear of escalating tensions with the Soviets that it is up to the Japanese people to save themselves. Under the surrender terms of 1945, the Japanese were not allowed any form of armed forces with the Japanese Self Defense only being formed in 1954, being allowed by the US at the time as it meant that Japan could take up more responsibility for its own defense, which up to that point had been the responsibility of the US. Most of the events in the movie have historical context, with the mine clearances, the atomic bomb test and the Takao all having a basis in fact. Takao was sunk as a target ship in October 1946 (source National Museum of the US Navy) having been laid up in Singapore being deemed unrepairable after being damaged in attacks during WW2. I love this movie and tear up every time I watch it. I would rate this as my favourite Godzilla movie hands down particularly due to it's focus on a small number of main characters and am waiting for it to become available for purchase in the UK. (Currently I can only watch it through Netflix on streaming here.). The fact that it was not allowed another run after it's Oscar success, (reportedly due to a deal that stated it could not compete with King Kong x Godzilla) is a travesty. Something that I only picked up after multiple watches, (I saw this 3 times in the cinema) is that the main character is constantly being told to "live". The letter from his mother telling him to "come back alive, Noriko, and even Tachibana when showing him the ejection seat all emphasize this message. So glad you enjoyed the movie. Shame I missed you reaction to the table headbutting bows when he is trying to find Tachibana.

Honestly it's a VERY astute and accurate comment. Japanese mythology is an offshoot of Chinese mythology. Bowser appears to be a combination of the French Tarrasque, and the Chinese Dragon Turtle. Both are turtle shelled dragons with some amount of hair. Though the Tarrasque takes it further, giving it fully a lion-ish mane head of hair, as well as being covered in spikes, just as we see with Bowser. Dragon Turtles, and Bowser also share facial similarities to the Guardian Lion statues AKA Foo Dogs AKA Komainu AKA Shishi. Godzilla is a dinosaur/dragon thing, but it's frequently designed with these Eastern-style dragon/mythical beast traits, which are inherently a bit canine/feline. Some sort of underlying mammalian-ness. As a result, the designs frequently strongly echo the faces of Dragon Turtle and Komainu statues, just as Bowser does, though obviously without the shell, mane, and spikes. It's more in the face design. Those Eastern mythology dragon face traits that borrow mammalian lion and dog features.... (And the mammalian traits even echo through the overall body shape, thought that of course was for practical necessity reasons of having to cram an actor in the Godzilla costumes.) That's a huge part of why Legendary Godzilla was the best Godzilla design (before they ruined it in GVK and GXK). Legendary Godzilla is FULLY a reptilian design on a surface level. Like it has no mane, or canine teeth, or little silly ears or cat nose or anything. And that makes it feel FAR more realistic and plausible as some sort of massive lizard or dinosaur, or even falling more within the realm of our accepted expectations of what a dragon is. BUT, his overall proportions and structure and movements are overwhelmingly designed to look and move like a MASSIVE bear. He got upgraded to echoing not jus a dog or lion, but the most massive and terrifying of ALL mammalian land predators. BEARS. His bipedal lumbering walk echoes a bear's bipedal walk. His crouching run and quadrupedal gallop echo a bear charging on all fours. The way his head moves, and the way he handles his mass are mimics of bears too. But bears are also cute, and somehow THAT comes through too, a tiny bit. Like there's something about bears that we like and relate to, and that lets us connect to Legendary Godzilla WITHOUT actually doing anything to make him cute. He's 10000% giant terrifying badass lizard dragon dinosaur monster, but SOMEHOW we still find him a little cute and something we can connect to, and THAT allows us to so easily buy into and cheer for him as the hero. Something about the design allows us to project a feeling of benevolence on him. Somewhere under all that ruthlessly badass indestructible armored lizard dragon design is a distant echo of your puppy, or a teddy bear, or your cat. In GvK, to make Kong seem like the hero, they began screwing with Legendary Godzilla's design, screwing up his proportions, giving him longer arms to allow for more of crouching crawl-style movement, having him burst out of the water a ton to snatch his prey, and just overall adding a LOT of crocodilian traits to his build and movements. Because we don't relate to crocodiles. They're terrifying. They're the bad guys. It was just the wrong direction for Godzilla. Both because we need that relatability to see Godzilla as the hero (he WAS ultimately one of the heroes), AND because those mammalian traits tie back to that classic Godzilla design, and the Dragon Turtles, and Komainu, and Bowser, etc etc etc. It's simply more authentic to what Godzilla is supposed to be.

If I remember correctly, Cassie, Kamikaze translates to "divine wind" in Japanese. Obviously, since you've already completed the movie, you know that when applied to a Japanese pilot, yes, they were basically suicide bombers. But I wanted to share the original meaning with you :) As for how he was treated coming back to Tokyo. He was, at least in the eyes of his people, considered a coward, having committed a dereliction of his duty by feigning engine trouble to get out of committing suicide by crashing in to enemy targets.

I love doing this type of stuff. My daughter who is 13, hates the music I listen to, of course, so I got that tracy chapman song fast car, used a pitch shifter for my voice, and at the beginning of the song, I say "ladies and gentlemen, Billie Eilish, and then added fake applause. She loved it and couldn't figure out why she couldn't find it on youtube. This was a little before the country version was done and I gave her a fake song title.

This was the way Godzilla was meant to be portrayed. As a destructive force of nature. The design of him and the look of the face was downright scary. When they detonate that 2nd mine and you see the mouth area regenerate and then he stands up and looks right at them with all those teeth showing ... I would have lost my mind. Hats off the the VFX team for creating quite possibly one of the scariest versions of Godzilla we've ever seen (Shin Godzilla is right there too). Loved that this won the Oscar, they deserved it. A movie for the ages.

I agree. In this one and Shin Godzilla, it's a bit stiff, but I think it adds to the impression of this massive, monolithic creature that almost doesn't seem like a mortal being. Although the first state of it in Shin Godzilla is this wriggly, bizarre animal, gives body horror vibes.
@TheKyrix82

The part that didn't dawn on me at first that I really grew to appreciate; is how when Tachibana chose to save Koichi, he was not only forgiving him but also saving himself. That man had been a mechanic specifically for kamikaze planes, knowingly sending many men to their deaths. On top of that, he was unable to save any of the men who worked under him when Godzilla first attacked, and took his anger out on Shikishima. For a man who had felt guilt for years in being associated with so much death, he redeemed himself by finally getting to save a life. Also, watch Shin Godzilla. A close second as far as modern Godzilla films go, though nothing can quite top Minus One if you ask me. Shin is ultimately a dark satire that critiques the largely inadequate response Japan's government had to the 2011 Fukushima tsunami and subsequent nuclear meltdown.

FYI fan theory. Godzilla splits apart at the end, only the part with Godzillas atomic heart will regenerate back into Godzilla. All the other parts will regenerate into other Kaiju like Rodan, Anguirus, Manda, and others. Also fan theory partially confirmed by movies creators, Noriko survived Godzillas atomic breath because she absorbed some of Godzillas regenerative energy, you can see black marks on her neck in the final scene meaning she could mutate into a Kaiju like Biolante which was part human. Cannot wait to see where Toho takes us next. This has 💯 more interesting ideas than anything Legendary can put out ❤

There's a deeper context when Gojira uses nuclear breath for the first time. When the bombs fell on Japan they were followed by a black rain (kuroi ame), the rain was made black by picking up the particulates kicked up by the bombs. People on the ground were covered in the rain which carried these highly radioactive particulates, and because the bombs destroyed much of the infrastructure a lot of the systems carrying running water did not work so some people drank the rainwater not realizing that it was radioactive which could not be removed by boiling or other cleaning methods. This rain increased the already tragic exposure to radiation of many hibakusha (people affected by the bombs). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Rain_(novel)

godzilla is literally the mc's physical manifestation of his survivors guilt and ptsd. there wasn't a mistake in the writing to make him a kamakaze pilot who chickened out. this was a man who was called on to die for a pointless cause. but when he chickened out, and even the mechanic patted him on the back for doing the right thing, godzilla shows up immediately to kill everyone else. giving the mc a physical demonstration of the lives possibly lost by failing to die earlier. to drive the symbolism home directly he chickens out a second time by not shooting at godzilla. and action we all know is pointless and would have resulting in his death. still the mc got to watch other people die in his place as a result. he comes home and is imediately confronted by a civilian, a neighbor who's children all died in the firebombing of tokyo, who blames "cowards like him" for the deaths of the civilians on the home front, and the MC then finds out, after hearing the accusation that him and people like him are responsible for her childrens... and yes.. parent's deaths, it then starts to sink in... it flashes to his parents letter wishing him to survive the war, and he's breaking down because he survived... for what? a ruined city and a lot of people dead and somehow he was still alive. it's not a surprise godzilla isn't defeated by a pointless kamakaze attack, but only when the mc wants to live for akiko and is willing to die for her, that the mechanic proclaims he's finally ready to do his duty. then shows him the ejection seat. he had the propper mindset of a warrior, of someone willing to do what was needed. and not pointlessly sacrifice himself in the madness of war. and litterally by killing godzilla he could finally bury his ptsd and his survivors guilt, the guilt of being a coward. and live again with akiko and noriko.

Godzilla: Minus One is technically a remake of the 1954 original and serves as the first movie in this continuity. Basically, Godzilla movies are divided into different eras depending on who was Prime Minister of Japan when they were made. There’s the Showa era (1926-1989) Heisei Era (1989-1995), Millennium Era (1999-2004) and the Reiwa Era (2014-now). The Showa Era is its own continuity which begins with the 1954 original and continues all the way to 1975. The Heisei Era is also its own continuity, but the 1954 original also serves as the first movie in the timeline of this continuity. Most of the films in both the Millennium Era and current Reiwa Era are stand-alone and do not share continuity with any other movies (except for the Monsterverse films and Netflix anime trilogy). Also, Godzilla has always had the ability to regenerate. Minus One is probably the first movie to properly showcase his healing abilities.

My favorite part of the story is that so many people had a character arc. From the most obvious, Mr. Shikishima to the young guy, who became the hero with the tugboat team to Mr. Tachibana who was the reluctant mechanic hero. To Sumiko, who struck Mr. Shikishima twice, once at the beginning of the film in disgust and once at the end in relief that Sumiko, Koichi and Akiko would be a family. This Godzilla film has the best story, with nods to the original and very human and very relatable characters. I don’t know if you need to react to another Godzilla movie. This one sets the bar pretty high.

Unlike most 'monster' movies, Godzilla in this movie represented all of the hate, destruction, misery, etc...that culminated due to WWI and WWII. The world had just gone through more than a decade of the horrors of war. And in this movie, Godzilla was the result of so much of the dark side of humanity. His atomic/nuclear breath was a reflection of the device created to end the war against Japan, initially developed by Germany, and brought to grim realization by America. It's impact was inevitable, though devastating. The after effect still felt until this day. 'Godzilla Minus One' was showing us the horrors of humanity, and the struggles to move forward from devastation and loss. GREAT MOVIE! GREAT REACTION!

In the Godzilla Minus One finale, Noriko is shown to have a black infection spreading on her neck. Shikishima can't see it, but it's very much in the shape of Godzilla's iconic dorsal fin. It's not radiation poisoning either, as it's shown to be active, hinting at some sort of sentience. It times with the final shot of the movie, which is a piece of Godzilla's body regenerating in the ocean, teasing his return. This development plays into two eras of Godzilla movies.
