You have to be in the mood for some campy things while shutting down a good part of your brain to enjoy them. One thing I like about this Godzilla is that he is relatively small. He's only 50 meters tall compared to the 118-meter Monsterverse, the 120-meter Shin and the 300-meter Godzilla Earth. To the bigger Godzillas, they scarcely notice humans like specks. But this smaller Godzilla sees them, knows they're there, and ACTIVELY hates them.

So Alteori, one thing you might have missed in regards to Gojira's theme is that for the first time since the original 1954 film, the used both (yes both) themes for their intended purpose. When Gojira was on screen, you were hearing the original theme for Gojira. The second part (when the human characters were taking action) is actually the theme for Humanity. This is legitimately the best film in the "Gojira" series since the original (which I STRONGLY recommend you watch next, though I would warn you, when I first saw the original Japanese version in theaters, I ugly cried manly tears of manliness).

I might be too much of a purist, but I absolutely hated Shin Godzilla. While I liked this movie, I really hated the changes to Godzilla in this. Not the origin, I'm okay with them shaking some things up in a reboot. What I hated about this one are the changes to the atomic breath, both the end result and the spines popping up as the breath powered up. I also hated that Wolverine style healing factor as well. The second one, I understand kind of why they changed it for this movie when you consider the ending(they had to make a way to defeat him). And yes, I know about the whole G-Cell thing from the Millenium Era, but I really prefer Godzilla taking damage being more meaningful. Conventional weapons should never cut it, pardon the pun.

It's so crazy how it took Toho this long to realize that making Godzilla bigger wasn't the solution. You gotta establish a good setting that you care about only to have Godzilla screw it up. It gives weight to his destruction. I really hope this movie does well so we can can get more of them. Despite only cost 15 million dollars it looks hella good. In both screenings the audience got up to clap, that's how much of a good impression this movie made and we cannot forget to appreciate the actors who brought their A game to what could have been a forgettable monster movie but they were the heart of it.

The $15 million has me asking lots of questions, is the cost of living in Japan much lower than USA? so CGI artists can be paid less? Or is cost of living comparable to USA so then are they underpaid? Did they hire less crew to work longer hours and they cool with that? Or they really struggled in production? Are USA production crew overpaid then?

Just back from seeing GMO. It’s definitely as good, and in some ways better than the original. I appreciated the character development. You truly care about these people and the time spent with them does not detract from getting plenty of Godzilla screen time. The acting is pretty much top notch. The story is tight and moves along at a good pace. The scenes with Godzilla are at least as memorable as the original. Agree that holding off using the full Godzilla theme music till the very end amped up its emotional impact to the max. First movie I have been to in a long time where the audience applauded at the end.

I love this movie! About the actors for Koichi and Noriko, after making this they played a loving couple on "Ranman" that we watched daily for its six month run. So coming into this, as an audience in Japan, we're already emotionally attached to this couple. The best compliment I can pay to the human characters is that I would still want to watch a movie about them even if there was no Godzilla. I also felt pity for Godzilla, in the way you would for a rabid dog that needs to be put down. He's a bomb victim lashing out in anger, a wounded animal.

I disagree that Shin Godzilla was "afraid." Reactionary, yes, but not afraid. The way he was portrayed, I attribute him to almost a zombie: nearly emotionless/lifeless, operating purely on instinct. I think from what we saw in his earlier forms, Shin Godzilla was probably in a delusional, pained state of mind. Early shots of him made it seem like he was barely aware of what was going on, and almost confused about what was occurring with him in terms of his rapid evolution. While he did exhibit recognition of pain, I never saw a creature who was fearful.

I know what shocked me the most was that in the very first scene, we see Godzilla in full. Roughly 3 minutes into the movie, we all know he's gonna attack Odo Island because duh. It's Odo Island. But rather than a quick glimpse or people shooting at something offscreen, dude shines a spotlight and he's right there. Second most soul crushing (which is immediately followed by the first) is when the tanks fail to seriously harm Godzilla. The fleeing crowd just... gives up. They cry, hug loved ones, or simply wait for the end because they've realized there's no hope of surviving. People running and trying desperately to survive is pretty powerful (at least when the focus is actually kept on them rather than just making them kill tallies for the monster) but people simply giving up and waiting to die is way more so.

“Godzilla Minus One kicks ass!” I couldn’t agree more! As a longtime G-fan, this is the dark, apocalyptic blockbuster take on Godzilla that I’ve been waiting for Hollywood to make FOR YEARS! You can only imagine how surprised I was that it was Godzilla’s original studio, Toho, to be the one to make such a movie! To put it simply, I love this movie! I still can’t get over how much I love it, let alone how much praise and success this movie is getting (Well deserved, may I add)! This movie fulfilled my expectations for “Godzilla 2014” when Legendary Pictures first teased us with that 2012 Comic-Con trailer (Before Legendary pulled the “Bait and Switch” on everyone). “Minus One” is what the 2014 film THINKS it is! It tells an emotional and compelling human story while still providing all the awesome kaiju action that you would hope for. In all seriousness, “Minus One” has been an absolute blessing (and I don’t use that term lightly, if ever)!

I think the song you're thinking of Alteori is Pharoahe Monch - Simon Says

@@Shift4g I didn't even know the name of the song until I looked it up after Alteori mentioned it. I heard her describe it and thought that it was that one song from Charlie's Angel's that the bad guy was dancing to and sure enough it was.

The single greatest strength of this film is that it gives us an updated version of the original vision of Ishiro Honda - one of a living, walking embodiment of nuclear war itself: even the heat ray attack of Godzilla perfectly mimics an atomic bomb blast! And the black rain that follows is the perfect reminder of the impending holocaust of radioactive death that remains long after the initial explosion! Truly terrifying to ponder upon seeing it. I only had a couple of relatively minor issues with this film - the first being that one scene with the tanks in Ginza: the animation work was a little unpolished and they kinda looked like they just rolled in from a different film, but I can chalk this up to the production crew’s special effects budget getting thin (after all, this film was made for under $20 million) and the tanks were not on screen very long. Secondly, some of the actors might have overacted some of the scenes they were in (the minesweeper captain comes to mind - there were a couple of scenes that came across as just a tad cheesy) but this was the exception rather than the rule as the acting was very well suited to the scenes throughout 95% of the film. Overall, I give this film a 9.5 out of 10 - those big Hollywood studios need to be taking notes as they watch as Toho made a technically superior film to most of what they pushed out the door this year on a fraction of the production budget!

What i love about this Godzilla design is that not only does he looks convincingly terrifying, his design was so brimming with personality, HIS EYES despite being a rampaging monster shows clear sign of intelligence, it screams so much of how his grudge against Humanity is PERSONAL.

Marvel needs to take notes. Godzilla Minus One has been in production since 2019 and its CGI was not rushed unlike the latest Marvel movies.

The budget creep of Hollywood Blockbusters in general is not sustainable. Hopefully this movie can serves as a reminder that you do not need 100+ million dollar budgets to make great films.

25:14 The reason the simple story is better and simpler than any other American version, is that in America they try to make Godzilla a good guy or some kind of an anti hero type where destruction is not his goal, but the balance of power in the world, while in this movie Godzilla is a villain and a threat that must be stopped and that's why it works better, because the focus is only on him and you're rooting for the humans because you're supposed to root for them, since Godzilla was originally a representation of destruction in the original first movies (because this is an original monster from Japan for those who don't know), because it represented the destruction of the atomic bombs that were dropped during the war.

Godzilla is always my favorite when he's the solo antagonist. Monster brawl movies are fun but give me a well written human-drama with Godzilla as the threat to be dealt with and I'm all in 100%. This was the Godzilla movie I had been waiting for. I adored it.
