1:58 so like the entire Showa, some of the Heisei and most of the Millennium eras? It's not just the American films, Godzilla can be more than just an evil monster, its the reason he's still around

I went into this movie with an expectation of around 6/10. (This was also my first ever fully subtitle movie.) Came out of this movie with a 11/10. (Gets a bonus point for blowing me away with its captivation) Probably tops Oppenheimer as my favourite movie of 2023.

Everything was perfect to me: Story, Characters, Godzilla (design, sound, visual effects) character arc, Set Design, Cinematography, Humor, Dialogue. Of course were used to getting trash by hollywood thats why its so appealing to Western audiences. But in its own merits its still a very good movie.

I think Odo island didn’t come off as effective in B&W. I just saw that version tonight after seeing the Color version 3x and the fire lighting is crucial in making pre atomic Zilla as scary as he was. Additionally the monochrome made that whole sequence way too dark. The first time I saw the film in Imax thst Odo sequence absolutely blew me away. I’d never seen Godzilla pick up people and hurl them into the sky.

I agree, Odo Island was the one scene in the entire movie that wasn't as good or better in Minus Color.

@@raysure1345 I'm not sure what it was, it might be because it was my second viewing. I saw it color first, and Odo Island was terrifying and tense. it felt much less so my second viewing in black and white.

Yes they did a great job making it feel like it’s from 1950s The Minus Color edition was just too good

I loved the Black and White version. It hit differently than the color. I would personally say I enjoyed it more in B/W, but both were fun movies. It was a return to classic story telling with a modern twist. PTGS (Post Traumatic Godzilla Syndrome) is a thing in this film. I liked how Godzilla got bigger as time went on as more and more atomic waste was added to the world. It was a relatable story for the humans with just enough character development to get me invested. The happy ending was perfectly in line with a 1950s film that remembered it was created to entertain people, not leave them feeling empty. One of the year's best films.

@jarrodskufcagaming5203 They are, but I found the experience to be quite different. Color plays a role in perception. It's like walking into a well lit room versus one with lots of shadow and places for unexpected things to be lurking. Perception matters.

The acting in this movie is outstanding, that you get what's going on without really reading. The only parts I paid attention to the writing on the screen was when Godzilla first appears on Onho (sp?) Island, the other time was towards the end with the planning of taking on Godzilla. Otherwise, you don't even notice the words as the acting conveys all the emotion. It's a darn good movie. I still rave about it.

My kid loves godzilla. I never got into it, even kong. Im not even sure ive sat thru an entire old school godzilla movie. We went to see g-1 at a regal 4dx motion theater. It was amazing. We havrnt rewatched the movie since then so I'm curious how bias i am from the motion seats experience. But this is how i explain it to my friends: if you take the monster out of this particular monster movie, its still a good movie.

Ok ... How much screen time would you say the bug guy gets?
@LoneWolf_Cub_Ogami_Itto
26 күн бұрын
@didgeteria9068 not a ton. It's more built on the characters. However much like Jaws, Alien, John Carpenter's Halloween, WHEN we see Gōjira its not awesome or triumphant, it's horrifying & devastating. Gōjira is a monster in this film, he's angry & vindictive. The human characters are very well written and acted, though I recommend sticking to Japanese dub, English dub of this film is jarring. My answer to you is, just watch it. Minus One's 2 hour run time is worth your 2 hours as an audience participant. The top 3 best Godzilla films in my opinion: 1. Minus One 2. Gōjira (1954) 3. Shin Gōjira Gōjira 1984 is damn good too. But I prefer the Japanese Gōjira, Destructor of Nihōn for the crimes of Industrial Imperial Japan. I do not care much for Godzilla hero of Earth type, though I enjoy the cheesy Shohei era of 1960s-1970s monster fights, they're not good movies but certainly fun. But as far as good cinema, compelling film goes, Godzilla works best as a monster to destroy the Japanese spirit & island. The one spoiler I'll give you is he shows up within 1st 5-10min and in up to 5min over, and it's never misunderstood Godzilla is beyond a threat. I'll also say this movie doesn't give tired old criticisms of Hirōshima & Nagasaki A-bombs, it criticizes the US Army Air Corps firebombing campaign on Tokyo that ended 5× the Japanese people more than Hirōshima+Nagasaki combined via conventional weaponry of WW2. It also, more so than the last, criticizes the Industrial Japanese Empire for treating young Japanese men's lives so cheaply for honor, Empire & Tennō Hiro Hito. It takes responsibility for the role Imperial Japan took on the battlefield of WW2. That was refreshing, it's a very humble film, a Hero's redemption journey film. By far, the best theatrical feature film I've seen in a cinema since The Dark Knight. It was a spectacle with humanity & substance and I won't lie, yes it made me tear up a few times. That almost never happens to me. You feel a great deal for our main character Shikashima Kōichi, Noriko& Akikō. You feel a great deal for our supporting characters and the Japanese people as a whole, especially Japanese Veterans. And you feel a great deal of fear for those same people when Godzilla shows up, Godzilla is so destructive in this film. So to answer your question: Godzilla is not our main character, he's our main villain and though he doesn't get the most screen time, he has the most impact when he is on screen than any other Godzilla film. This is how I and many others felt about this film. My father saw Gōjira in Germany 1961 at 4 years old, I took him to see it my 2nd viewing, half way through he leaned over and said this is not at all the Godzilla I was expecting and when we left thr theater he said if this is my last film in theaters, I'm satisfied with that to end where I began in theaters. We both agreed, one of the best films on all levels a film is judged that we've seen in a very long time. Spielberg has a similar sentiment thar Gōjira was one of his 1st theatrical films as a kid, saw it 3×, it was very clear Gōjira was part of Spielberg's inspiration for Jaws, and Jaws was one of Takashi Yamazaki's inspiration for Minus One making a complete circle. Just see it. Comment after you do, if you think it was boring I'll accept that, but please go see it. I recommend a surround sound if possible, the sound of this movie is amazing and again, recommend Japanese Voice dub & English subtitles. The acting is top notch, and 1 more thing as you watch keep reminding yourself Toho Studios made this foe estimated $12M-$15M production budget, then juxtapose that with all the inflated crap Hollywood has made the last decade. Takashi Yamazaki was a VFX guy most his career, he headed a 35 man VFX team, wrote and directed this movie, a vision of 1 man and it shows.

I enjoyed both color and minus color, but minus color would’ve been cooler/different if there was a little less music. Some music is good and essential, but a little less would’ve made it feel like the 1954 Godzilla. Loved both nonetheless.

The comparison of Minus One to that of the entire MonsterVerse is not really fair. & a bit disingenuous take out the Japan soldier out of the equation. And you still some of the complaints that you made about the American Version and while I admit in some key aspects MinusOne does better but the comparison just isn’t entirely realistic there’s a reason there’s contracts for 2 different countries they get to keep it & do one offs & one where we in the US get to have our thing and before you start possibly making assumptions it gets a 96% from me but I’m just saying while $15 or so Million looks outstanding but saying that it’s better than the US Version of King of the Monsters in the action department… common now. I didn’t want to spoil your fun for it. But again let’s not entirely drink it’s KoolAid. & be realistic. I saw it in color within roughly the week if not first few days or so of its release. I’d still as I said give it a 96%.
