Goethe has shown increasing interest in Islam over time. In 1814 Goethe read the German translation of the work "Diwan" by the Persian poet and mystic Hafis and was obviously enthusiastic.
This resulted in 1814 the work "West Eastern Divan", Goethe's most extensive collection of poetry. In the Islamic world, the West-East Divan is considered a masterpiece of German poetry. The work is divided into twelve books, with titles such as "The Book of Hafiz" or "The Book of Giving."

The interesting relationship between Goethe and Hafis can be analyzed in many ways. His real name was Muhammad Shams ad-Din. Hafis are called people who know the Koran by heart. Muhammad Shams ad-Din knew the Koran by heart.
Goethe was so fascinated by the poems of Hafis that he immediately started working on the West-Eastern Divan.
