“Going Home” is an African American folk spiritual that became the theme of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s New World Symphony because of influence of Harry Thacker Burleigh, whose birthday is today, 12/02/1866. Burleigh played a significant role in the development of American art song, having composed over two hundred works in the genre. He was the first African-American composer acclaimed for his concert songs as well as for his adaptations of African-American spirituals. Burleigh was accepted to the prestigious National Conservatory of Music in New York, eventually playing double bass in the Conservatory's orchestra. In 1893, Burleigh also introduced Czech composer Antonín Dvořák to Black American music, which influenced some of Dvořák's most famous compositions and led him to say that Black music would be the basis of an American classical music.
