An alternative start would be to have a group of academics become refugees. High intellect skills but crappy everything else. How quickly would they learn and adapt outside of their books? Only need a single set of stairs for the upstairs. Harder to defend two stairs if invaders get through the firsr door. Adding a third floor defensive tower would simplify dealing with any attacks in the early settlement. I'd usually just leave the second floor unenclosed to use as a shooting platform until I'd built up enough materials for a more ambitious construction program. I usually find a big depression in the ground with smaller areas depressed within that area. Remove all but one ramp or build some stairs in a better position into those depressions. Put a door and a couple walls up to block the upper stairs. Build a floor above the lower depression to form a roof so hay can be dumped down there for fodder. Designate the entire area as the animal pen. Saves a lot of effort building an actual pen or buildings to house animals. The animals won't care since they only want food and covered shelter at night. If you want the hay to last longer, and not rot eventually, build some flooring under it in the animal pen. That area right behind your building could be used for an animal pen. Jackie didn't have any clothes on at all. That's why you were getting the constant settler is cold warning. That's one thing I don't like about the start scenarios. You can specify they all wear flawless clothing out of whatever material you wish but they may spawn in with flawless clothes with nearly zero hp that rots off within days. That leaves you with not enough materials to sew into clothes, short a settler with tailor skills, or short of the technology needed for sewing tables. Only thing to be done is rob dead enemies of their flimsy or sturdy clothes which give settlers the ugly clothes morale debuff. You could save room in your storage by putting mined materials like dirt, iron, clay, limestone, gold, and silver as well as their refined ingots out in open air storage. Weather doesn't affect those materials so it's perfectly safe to leave them exposed.

As always, lots of good info....I just started so I will adjust and get things running properly, don't worry. Also, good idea for an alternative scenario.

So - you've gone for a reality TV cast of dullards? Hmm - sounds like it'll be a frustrating series if you keep that up.

@@bears_n_beans Thinking about that island - love the idea - maybe a shell keep? Entrance on the floor one up from ground level from a bridge connecting to a guard tower on the mainland end? Would be very hard to attack, you'd be able to concentrate your defense in one place and if the walls were 3 blocks thick from ground level to 3rd floor it would be very resistant to trebuchets. Lots of possibilities there.

Interesting design.....I am a bit deep into a design already, but many similarities...keep 'em comin'!

@@bears_n_beans I did a circular tower on a island in Minecraft once with the farm on the roof due to lack of space. It occurred to me that the idea would adapt well to Going Medieval because of trebuchets, which aren't a thing in Minecraft.

I totally understand....and don't worry, the devs have lots of plans for this game. I can't wait for the ability to take prisoners, raid other settlements, and use siege weapons!
