Ram Das would always say... " Oh if you think you're so enlightened, go spend a few hours with your family". The problem is most people's solution to that problem is to avoid it but only through some friction and pain does growth actually occur. He did not mean the solution was to avoid his family, it was just a reminder that he had so long to go. Most people today think the answer to all their problems is to just avoid them. Good luck with that. Definitely don't ever ponder that you may be the wrong one, that could clearly never be fruitful!

Some members ( too many ) of society are so self absorbed in their own self righteousness and entrenched ways of being they commit the very heinous acts they accuse others of. for the last 2 years or so I have intentionally looked at publications, opinion pieces and "scholarly" works from camps that I normally could not agree with . I have never looked back. I must look at and examine life from multiple views if I am truly to have compassion for myself and others. I am on a quest to have less and less judgment and more pragmatic compassion. it's challenging for me but absolutely necessary for my own development. I feel like I am alone in this so often. Filial piety is really big in Japanese Buddhism in general. Kukai famously made a place at Koyasan for his mother to live in so he could visit her regularly. Nichiren was also crazy about filial piety, with his parents being among his very first converts. He called the Lotus Sutra Buddhism's "classic of filial piety." On the Zen side of things, Suzuki Shosan heavily emphasized respect for one's parents, and actually extended this parental respect to one's feudal lord (he was a samurai, so that stuff came with the territory lol). Anyone advocating for going no-contact with their family over such petty reasons would have been seen as totally crazy by all of these people.

Is it in some way inconsistent with your beliefs and practices to refer to a person by their preferred pronouns? I recall a video you'd made discussing how making accommodations for people in retreat settings can be problematic, and i appreciated that. I agree that our overuse of labels divides us into factions and can potentially move us further apart from another. We develop attachments to our personal 'brand' of ego. Whether that be nationality, religion, gender, ethnicity, or political persuasion. But I dont think its asking too much to refer to a person, even one you vociferously disagree with, by the pronouns they identify with. Or, if doing so would be inconsistent with your beliefs, why not refer to all people with they/them, and get beyond the gender label altogether?

The thing with going no contact is that even if the individuals you're dealing with might be incredibly toxic and you may not be entirely in the wrong for wanting to do that including with your family members however alot of people including people like the infamous Reverend Jim Jones used the whole thing of "You don't have to deal with these toxic crappy bad scumbags just come with me and my group and everything will be fine after that."As a means to manipulate and to be toxic towards people and even if you are gravitating towards a person who says just cut contact and come with me because the people you're currently with might be very toxic and this type of thing might seem like the right thing to do you could potentially be falling out of the frying pan and into the fire or potentially even into another frying pan.

Being no-contact is an integral part of Buddhism. In Pali this is called 'viveka'....detachment. Check out the Rhinoceros discourse in the Dhammapada. One whose mind is enmeshed in sympathy for friends and companions, neglects the true goal. Seeing this danger in intimacy, wander alone like a rhinoceros. Like spreading bamboo, entwined, is concern for offspring and spouses. Like a bamboo sprout, un-entangling, wander alone like a rhinoceros. As a deer in the wilds, unfettered, goes for forage wherever it wants: the wise person, valuing freedom, wanders alone like a rhinoceros.
