Here’s a quick little ride I managed to get of one of the ex-Yorkshire Olympuses. This is 4104, new as 1804, on the 85 to South Wigston.
I actually nearly uploaded this on my personal account, but luckily realised my mistake in time.
This will be my last bus of 2022, and what a better way of marking it than with a bus that won’t be here after Christmas, as it’s these Olympuses that the new MMCs will be replacing in the coming weeks.
On the plus side, Arriva have confirmed that the new StreetDeck Electroliners won’t be arriving until next October, so we’ve got until then with the DB250s now.
Back to the Olympuses, and when these first arrived at Wigston to replace the B7TLs 2 years ago, this was quite a frequent occurrence. Unfortunately, the transfer to Thurmaston led to these proving more popular on services like the 5/5A, 104 and 127, leaving this service to rot with more MMCs. 4106, 4111 and 4112’s premature departures didn’t help either, though it’s nothing new, as Oswestry have always taken good shit from us. Back in 2011, we lost 4644 to them, followed by 4622 the following spring. Then they denied us 4788, as it was brought into replace 4622, then to replace that, they took, then completely and utterly ruined, 4707.
Regardless, I always enjoyed travelling on them. They were something different, they were beasts, a lot better than our Gemini B9TLs, they had great legroom, and with the bodywork originally being from East Lancs, they were very reminiscent of the Lowlanders. One thing I didn’t like about these was the dodgy bells (then again, the Lowlanders also had that problem). Nonetheless, they’ve served Leicester well in the last 2 years, and I for one, will mourn their departure.
