I actually have see your boat many times when walking and fishing with my partner. I used to look at it and think that it has so much potential and it was just sitting there! I used to think that I would love to own and renovate it (not that i could right now lol) so to see the same exact boat on youtube, bought and being refurbished by you is an absolutely spectacular feeling. I feel uniquely connected to your project and channel. Thanks for sharing!❤

Hi - just found your site and look forward to following your adventures, I’m not an armchair expert (I have almost a quarter of a century around boats) so please take any comments that I may may imbibe in the future as gentle hints/reminders based on experience - so saying always attach a short safety line on anything that may get dropped overboard - like the outboard motor, I guarantee it won’t float and if you do god forbid drop it - it will not go to the bottom. Wishing you all the best in the future😊

Just a little word of warning, running the engine on the dry, will ruin the impeller in no-time at all, so not really something to repeat. Still it's nice to see that this small engine is willing to do the job, until you instal something better suited for the job. Best of luck to the three of you.
@alan6832

I like to see how so little power can move such a big boat as that is why they originally built canals, before big power was available. The over oiling is probably fouling the plug. since the engine is new, that can probably be corrected soon and should be before carbon build-up sticks the rings to the piston. But until that can be corrected or on old 4 strokes where it can't easily be corrected, I use hot plugs (with a deep internal valley) with small plug gaps, and usually get good results. In the field like that, if you can't correct the oil right away and have no plug selection with you, then reduce plug gap, and clean the insulator, to get it started.

Putting a line on the outboard motor with a bouy on would help you find it if you slipped while you were manhandling the motor and it fell in to the canal.

Hi both, when you go into the dry Dock ask them if they can put some heat on your tiller arm and straighten it for you, it will make your life a lot better when steering. Also your poor little outboard being a two stroke do need the nuts revved out of it now and again to blast out the muck build up in it. Be safe.

ALWAYS bring spare spark plugs for a two-stroke engine, particularly one that idles-along like yours does. They love to foul their plugs (especially when shovelling-out as much blue smoke as yours does), and two-stroke plugs wear out early and you can't tell by looking at them - don't ask me how I know... I would've recommended you getting a Honda 4-stroke outboard, but needless to say, they cost a whole lot more than a Hangkai 2-stroke.

I love those boats/barges, there is so much potential with the one you have. I love seeing people build out of things like these. I will be going back and watching the previous episodes, got to know the beginning and will continue to look forward to the progress. I did a conversion in a retired school bus that I am currently living in, it was an adventure,nightmare drama and comedy all rolled into one with a lot of sweat a few tears and little blood lol. Remember wear your gloves and eye protection when working on you adventure so it stays just that an adventure. When times seem tough and hard, keep pushing because getting to look back on what you accomplish, build and learn along the way and being able to see it and think to yourself "I built that" is it's own reward. p.s. I just saw that you also did a van so you've got some conversion experience, good luck with the boat.

The lock could be any Irish lock, until you look closely. Our balance beams are almost all horizontal and you never walk on them. The gates all have foot boards for crossing the lock. One that you’ll thank me for, some day. Never take your hand off the key, while it’s engaged with the rack spindle. If anything dislodges the ratchet, while you’re not holding it, the weight of the paddle will pull the rack down hard, causing the spindle to turn rapidly and usually throw the key off violently. With luck, all that will happen is it’ll go in the water and you’ll have to spend a day with a magnet, trying to find it. But it can cause serious injuries, possibly even kill somebody. If you’re walking away from the windlass key, put it on the ground. It can’t fall from there.

Wow, you two have had a full exhausting day! Glad that you were able to accomplish your intended goal. I can fully relate to park at a shop or store to use their WiFi, had to do that regularly a few years ago when out of work. I eventually bought an amplified directional antenna to place on the car roof, which gave 4X the communication range. If you are using the original spark plug that came with the outboard engine, those Chinese plugs are notoriously unreliable. I suggest buying a few NGK plugs for backup. One problem you may be having with the outboard - on cold damp mornings, the carburetor throttle plate can ice up, which shuts down the engine when it accumulates to certain point. Chris, clever hookup of the tiller to steer the outboard!

That’s why I like your inboard diesel. Cold can’t freeze your carburettor, if you haven’t got a carburettor. Plugs can’t foul, if you haven’t got plugs. Magnetos can’t short, when you have no magnetos. Also, sticky fingered canal walkers have to try a lot harder, to make off with a diesel that lives inside the boat. I was very surprised when you abandoned that and got the little 2T 6hp motor. I figured some emergency must have cropped up that necessitated moving the boat immediately, but the real engine would be sorted out in short order. Yet, months later, here you are, still struggling along with it. 2T motors are not good at long periods at low rpm. They don’t get hot enough to clean the spark plugs, if you don’t rev them way up for a while, every now and then. For the added reliability, if you’re going to be continuing with the outboard much longer, I’d really go for a 4T. They’re heavier, but much more dependable in cold and damp conditions, and happy to run at low revs for long periods. Oh, and attach a safety line to it. If you drop it, or it works loose, you don’t want to have to go in after it, or worse still, go in with it, while you try to save it. But get the Kubota installed and running. You won’t know yourselves. Even misery is more tolerable, when you know you can start and get warm, at will!

Your not going to get much life out of sparkplugs on an 2-stroke idling around like whats required there. 2-strokes are built to be ran hard. To much oil will make it worse. So buy spares an a plug wrench. Even a 2-stroke used correctly will foul plugs much more often than 4-strokes do. Also dump the fuel out an run the carburetor dry of fuel if you are not going to run it again for more than a week. Not as big of an issue there as it is here, but todays fuels are hydroscopic an not very carburetor friendly.

Having grown up cussing and discussing the operation of my Dads’ old two stroke Firestone 2.5 hp outboard I can attest to the necessity of carefully measuring out your oil to gas ratio. It can either gum up the works with too much oil, or in the much worse scenario, over heat the piston to the point of distortion, then it’s throughly done in. Also, run it hard, in gear, at the end of your day to clear out gunk from the cylinder. You can also get “no smoke” two stroke oil. But it still smokes some, but not like an old battleship steaming into battle🤣 I’ll echo the suggestion of having the tiller arm straightened. Besides that, have it made so that the arm can be completely removed when not in use. It clears the deck of unnecessary obstacles when you’re relaxing or having a soirée. Cheers from Dallas!
