SMT- Model Railroader magazine did have some articles about building your own DCC circuits sometime in the late 1980s-early 1990s before it was readily available from the model train manufacturers. The red slide switches inside the B-unit may be set to the digital code, but the setting may be in the Binary number system (Base 2) instead of the Decimal number system (Base 10). Maybe you could try setting your controller with each possible number and see if the locomotive responds.

@CZ350tuner

It might be a ADC (Analogue Digital Command) system, which was invented back in 1958. ADC operates by sending modulated digital commands through the track at long wave radio frequencies, with a specific loco and controller transmitter being assigned (tuned) to each other. In the UK Airfix marketed a multi-train ADC system, during the 1970's. ADC became extinct rapidly, when Hornby (with assistance from Texas Instruments) marketed the world's first commercially available DCC system, the Zero One, back in 1979.

@@CZ350tuner - General Electric offered an analog model train control that was called ASTRAC back in the 1960s. It allowed for independent control of multiple locomotives on the same track. I understand there were problems with the transmitters and receivers going out of tune.

I totally agree with @Petemonster62 our train club had the DCC design settup from Model Railroader back in the mid 80s. I came here to say what Pete said too. But he beet me to it. This looks very similar. They didn't sell boards but we made our own. There was also an option to add Radio Control so that could be an extra add-on your friend is seeing!

Hornby Dublo locos are notorious for suffering from chronic motor magnet depolarisation. They will require "zapping" in a remagnetiser, which is a service that was (and still is) commonly offered by some British model railway shops. Hornby Dublo is a 12 volt DC system.

That engine that blew the traction tire is stunning! I recently ordered an 80's to early 90's bachmann 4-8-4 S&SF that was new in box, sadly usps made sure to give it "special" treatment. It arrived in many pieces, the seller offered a refund but you inspired me to give fixing it a go. I got a decent partial refund, and now the locomotive is running again. I would like to replace all the gears (every single one got deformed or cracked in the impacts) but for now it runs solid, I even quartered it correctly. Thank you for your vids, I likely would have just returned it if I hadn't seen you fix so many.

Going to take a stab at the two oddballs. There were several command control systems that predated DCC and were not compatible with each other or DCC. In addition there were some analog sound systems that worked with DC power. I don't think it is just a sound system as it certainly is not PFM and does not match modeltronics. (plus the engine is not moving and has that set of dip switches.) There was a bit of homemade DCC in the beginning so you might try the number on the switches. However I would suspect it is a Keller Engineering Onboard System receiver. I did locate a review in April 1980 Model Railroader with a small pic and it used two boards in the engine. It was about the only early one that had sound. If it is Keller it is incompatible with DCC and they are long gone. Jim

SMT, all the British Hornby Dublo three rail models, and their later two rail versions, were all DC permanent magnet locomotives. It's just North America and Germany that use AC three rail. So trying to run them on AC will damage them. A good test for DC motors is to find if they have a permanent magnet.

I may know what the control boards that are in the Athearn F units. It looks to be a homemade CTC-16 command control system. This system predates DCC, it was offered in a DIY article series from the Model Railroader during the 1980s. The system used pulse DC power to form the digital information to make the locomotive move. The number 16 indicated how many locomotives that could be controlled which obviously be 16 (Note: This is the reason for the red dip switches that set the address). Due to the size of the boards, this system often employed a power unit and a dummy unit to have room for the boards or even a box car would work for the extra board room. I'm not surprised that the locomotives did not work on DC or DCC. They would need the proper DC pulse for the data, and the DCC system would not be able to give the proper packet (data) to make them work. It is interesting to note that the NRMA used this system for the basis of the modern DCC standards. The biggest change was going to a bipolar AC signal to prevent analog (DC) locomotives from taking off at rapid speed due to the full power DC pulse of the CTC-16 system. My recommendation would be to wire them for DC or install a decoder since it would be hard to find a proper CTC-16 command control system.

Cool story I actually mentioned when I was on the phone with them that I needed a B unit for an a unit that I had. I wanted a dummy but Blue Line didn't make dummy B units units so they're repair guys actually made me one out of parts.

One is No. 4008, on display at the CNR Station in Rainy River, Ontario, and the other is No. 4100, on display at the Canadian Railway Museum in Delson, Quebec. The F A-B sets are basically a First Gen of DCC home made it looks like. The Dip switches are for the adress im assuming. goodluck getting them running im sure somewhere there is a specific controller for them.

Those F unit sets may have an early form of command control before everything was standardized. I remember seeing articles or mentions of it all through the 80's. If so there's probably zero chance of a modern DCC system running it. It could even be a home brew system. I remember in the late 80's-early 90's seeing an HO model train club layout on display, and one guy had a pair of Santa Fe geeps that he controlled from an R/C plane controller. And decapods are 2-10-0's. 2-10-2's are called the "Santa Fe" type. At least in the US. May have been different in Canada.

Oh well I really didn't want to go to sleep before 1am anyways. 😂 Check the circuit boards and such and see if you can spot any company names on anything as seeing that does ring some bells from the late 80s very early 90s and I think it did involve a proprietary system of some sort. Worst case if you can't get them running independently gut the gears out to make them free rolling and do a ABA or more likely a ABBA with some powered leads and the free rolling sound units trailing. Always good to see someone scoring some great deals but usually when I see those large collections show up in situations like that I also have to remember there's usually one reason why a treasured and well cared for collection shows up like that. Not to be too grim but more than likely one of our number has caught out on that train bound for glory.
