@@daanm3869 Depending on game settings, stations may have to be connected to a voxel in order to stay as a station, if the grid has no connection to a voxel it may automatically convert to ship. As is I believe you need to start with a voxel to make a station anyways outside of creative. Of course, provided you don't overload any of your ships, this makes the asteroids just inside gravity wells very defensible, though you do need to be careful if you want to use them for a ship yard, as weld-wall ships are very easy to over load with components. so you need extra thrusters,

Just for reference, I think they've changed up all the atmo thruster numbers recently and none of the wikis out there are currently correct. (Suspect they've changed up all the other types too but I've only measured atmo). Basically large is the way to go these days unless you're below about 4 total, it used to be more efficient to use multiple smalls. Some in game numbers for small ship atmo in a current vanilla game which I believe are correct ... Small 699Kg 72KN 608KW Large 2948Kg 436KN 2.4MW Thrust to weight of small = 0.103 and large = 0.12. Thrust to energy consumed of small = 0.12 and large = 0.18 Basically a large is worth 6 smalls in terms of thrust but weighs a lot less than 6 smalls (4194Kg vs 2948Kg) and is 1.5 times more energy efficient than 6 smalls. You kind of need to be below about 4 smalls or really need to save space before smalls are worth it now! if you want to check this. Weight comes from adding one thruster to a grid and checking the mass in info. Power comes from the thrust override slider on the thruster, it shows the KN. Power consumption is shown in the control panel for the thruster.

Great info. I use large thrusters any time I can. I typically build ships around the thrusters, since they are so big. I still use small thrusters for sideways movement in most cases though, since I typically have 3 or less each direction. Another tip when building a miner using large thrusters is to put the reverse thruster on the top rear of the craft. As long as the thrust is clear in front of it, the craft will be much more drill capable and the thruster wont get in the way.

There is a reason it was nerfed. Hydrogen shouldn't be default thrust source.
@TheMhalpern
5 жыл бұрын
they don't want multi-environment ships to be easy, or the insane thrust of hydro engines to be sustainable, that is part of the game's balance. Hydro provides insane thrust, but it isn't practical to use constantly, forcing you to use it as a boost for atmo or ion, as well as a way to get limited operational range in either environment. Later in the game, they are supposed to be treated more as emergency thrust, this gameplay design is reinforced more by the hydrogen engines, which consume hydrogen very quickly, so are likely intended as an emergency power source. The other use case for hydrogen systems, is for missiles and fighters you don't intend to have a long shelf life, so more expensive to build power and propulsion systems are a bit of a waste.

If I'd charged my batteries to full I would have had over 24 hours of power which is more than enough for most uses before I'd return to a spot to recharge so I decided to forego the weight. I used a camera on my mining vessel for docking. It is mounted just in front of the connector on the vessel, and I have a light that lines up with it on my truck thing so that when I dock, all I need to do is get over the truck, switch to the camera, orient the vessel facing the rear of the truck, and lower myself, keeping the light in the center of the camera crosshairs and using the visible attitude indicator to keep the miner level. At first, I thought it was more of just a gimmick, but it is actually way faster than going to external view and trying to orient and line it up that way while moving the camera around.

I honestly think you have the best tutorial I have seen for most any game. I built my first spaceship exactly like yours and will be testing it tomorrow. My rover efforts were somewhat underwhelming as the rover was great, but once I attached my miner to it, I could never get unattached without the miner just completely spazzing out and falling over sideways and crashing. Anyway, in the solo game I'm in the land is too damn rocky to use a rover much, anyway, so it will be nice to look at in my driveway.

Thank you so much 😊 This worked. Im out in space, low on ammo and ice because pirates. But it worked, I shot them "down" and refuel on ice. Actually I ran out of hydrogen when I fpund ice, I jumped out while the ship drifyed in 5 m/s toeards space, with antenna off. But I managed to grab ice, flew back and the 600kg of ice, it was enough to stop the ship. So now I refuel. I forgot to add the camera. But decoys saved my ship :p If another pirate come I have to return to base with no ores so far.

I think it would be much better to build a much bigger ship right from the start so you will have plenty of storage space and fuel aside from the right way to actually gain oxygen. 2 rows of 4 large containers would be a good start, each having it's own mining drill. For the engine both on the top as the bottom 2 hydrogen tanks with for each a large thruster. Then for the batteries I think it would be a better idea to have on each side under the containers for the drills a row of 8 batteries each. This won't just allow power to be a healthy commodity, it will also make sure you can use this ship safely in planetary conditions if needed. Also adding the atmospheric thrusters and the hydrogen thrusters on more tactical positions on the ship it will turn better even if it's so huge. Also directly making sure you have other things you may need would be a lot better to add on from the start. Perhaps add a defensive turret of some type if you are able to create one. In case that's a possibility it may be well worth to add on each side a turret to defend the ship properly against those nasty drones.

One thing to note; Just like the other equipment in the game, the bigger it gets the more efficient it becomes. The large Drill gets more ore per voxel than the Small Drill, which gets more ore per voxel than the Hand Drill.

I had to add a total of 16 Atmo thrusters (upward) to no crash on re-entry, when returning with a full load (total weight of around 90Ton) The "safe load" of 1 small atmo thruster is around 7.5 tons (it's 7.7, but a little lower, just to be safe), using this, I say "2 thrusters for each 15 tons, + 2 for safety) So to avoid crashing, I had to have 14 thrusters to be able to fly, and then I added 6, just in case.

personnal note: you could use a hydrogen engine (but also keep in mind that you need easy access to toggle it on and off) so if your ship doesnt have solar pannels you could turn the engine on so you wont have problems going back to earth, wrost case scenario you could just use hand drill to get some ice to power your ship enough so it can collect some ice to power itself

I tried to return to a planet while full. It did not go well. Now trying to panic eject during decent to try and make salvageable "landing" Update: I had enough time to throw out most of the less useful ores to bring home. Had about 20% hydrogen and managed to bring it down on the tail with dampers on. Had the atmos engines off all the way until ~200m from the deck once I had about 0 movement. Could then use those for about 15 seconds to do the last bit of landing. May make adjustments before the next space mining run, like adding the emergency parachute I left out! It is a great video and a good craft for in space. Just watch that landing if you try to bring much home.

I usually use a Hybrid format of Atmo & Hydro for trips to space minimum and more commonly all three. Launch is done under Atmospheric thrust getting as high as I can before they fizzle out. as my momentum begins to fade denoting my Atmo's are giving up. I pitch my nose up and toggle my Hydro's to kick in turning off the Atmo's to save power. once in space far enough to escape the Gravity Well, the Ion's take over and Hydro's are switched off to save fuel.
@Splitsie
2 жыл бұрын
Of course you wouldn't have the ions yet on your first escape but yeah I tend to go hybrid for a lot of things too, though much less since the amount in hydro tanks was massively buffed :)

Hey! Just picked up this game a few days ago and I have been following your guides, they really have saved me. Whenever I am going back into earth to land, I can't seem to slow down, and my atmospheric thrusters don't seem strong enough to stop the speed. I have dampeners on and I hold space but I can't seem to slow down. Eventually I hit the ground and the ship explodes. Would be glad to hear your thoughts and possible solutions.

Great tutorial Splitsie Did they patch the hydrogen thrusters? They always used to eat a tiny bit of fuel to keep the candle lit. BTW, cockpits are good place to store bottles and tools if you want to keep your personal inventory clear. That reminder would have tied back nicely to your first episode :)
@Splitsie

I don't think they ever did - I messed up some tests a while back where I thought that they did because the O2 gen was providing oxygen to my engineer who was in the cockpit :P Good point about the cockpits as storage :)

the asteroids close to and just inside of the gravity well are probably some of the most defendable positions in the game, outside of keeping completely mobile, Battlestar Galactica style which constrains your industrial capabilities, you can get all your basic resources from large scale planetary mining, its hard to jump close to them, they are not on the surface where natural gravity can be used to accelerate kinetic weapons, and if an enemy gets too close, you just have to make sure they cant escape the natural gravity, letting the planet do the rest, even if they have parachutes, or are designed to fly in atmosphere as well, they will be far more limited in what they can do, and as you'd likely have much of the area of the planet below such a base as industrial complex, it would be fairly easy to have a dedicated defense force in atmosphere, to finish them off. Outside the gravity field is the easiest place to build large ships, too.
@Splitsie
5 жыл бұрын
There certainly are advantages, but I felt for new players it was less error prone to avoid them for the time being :)
@TheMhalpern
5 жыл бұрын
@@Splitsie oh definitely those very advantages can bite you in the ass if you aren't careful, and because it is really easy to want to put a LOT of cargo in a weld wall ship, for building large ships, it can be a rather expensive error.

I think you should mention how much ore you can actually bring back without crashing. Eight small atmo thrusters (two large ones should be more energy efficient for the same thrust IIRC) cannot account for much, maybe 50 tons all in all? I saw you use a neat litte large grid ship in the linked video. I have trouble building small efficient large grid ships to really get going to and in space, maybe you could do a tutorial about this?
