Vocalist/guitarist Joe Duplantier talks about Gojira's quest to create something powerful, like a storm, a mountain or a wave crushing. He explains that, as they've aged, they've been less concerned with sounding like bands like Morbid Angel or Death, or even belonging to a certain scene. He likens death metal to a childhood friend, whose impact on your life will be felt forever even when you've drifted apart. He assures fans that they still love death metal, elements of which can certainly be heard in their music, but they've just added more elements. One of those elements, the clean singing, has been subject of a lot of dissection from critics and fans alike. Duplantier doesn't get the big deal, explaining, "We're a rock band. That's what we do; we do whatever the fuck we want." October 20, 2016.
