Goju vs Shotokan? Best match! I went to Okinawa to practice Goju-ryu Karate. Goju-ryu is my favorite karate style. Training there was the best experience of my life. Even today I am very proud to have learned Goju-ryu Karate, practical and effective. During my stay in Okinawa, exchanges with other schools were stimulating, but the match against the Shotokan school was exceptional. They were powerful, quick and had a great variety of tricks. Indeed, it is the school that gave birth to Kyokushin and Taekwondo.

From what I have heard goju ryu is one of styles closer to original okinawan karate and they have more freedom to compete in point sparring type matches as well as full contact kyokushin type matches so they are probably more used to defend the head as well has the conditioning to fight full contact and ofcourse more grappling as well maybe

I don't like the idea of "sport" or "point" karate. It leaves out the main purpose of karate - deadly self-defense. Notice how these two guys weren't setting up any of their strikes. It was all just lunge in and hit and then retreat with no follow up strikes. That doesn't happen in a street fight. MMA proves that. Unless you get very lucky, one strike isn't going to incapacitate your attacker. You have to hit until you break some bones and inflict so much pain that HE wants to stop. Sport karate doesn't teach that. It's more like Olympic fencing which is also totally unrealistic. Just leap in and hope your strike touches first so you can get a point. In the streets, you may win that point but your opponent will probably survive the hit and be on top of you with many strikes of his own. Sport is not reality.

Kyokushin karate is very effective in tournaments and street fights, but goju-ryu when trained according to hand and toe tipping (very difficult and painful) is the most effective style of karate, it only has two problems with Goju-ryu training; 1- it takes at least 5 years to become a little good at it. 2- it damages your hands and feet after 10 years of hardening and will probably give you problems in your old age. I have been a Goju-ryu practitioner since 1979, I am 56 years old and I trained properly with an Okinawan teacher for 16 years to get my black belt, because in the original style you really take that long to be considered fit to receive a black belt.

You are absolutely incorrect about pretty much everything you stated. what bmakes the Ryu's different is the philosophies, different training regiments. different applications so no they are not the same. what you have reduced various Ryu's to is nothing more than a bunch of people getting together to kick and punch because all is the same in your eyes, which tells me that byou have very little knowledge about the various systems of Karate as a whole. While some techniques look the same they are not all the same in their applications.

@@sandersdooley929 I also have great knowledge of the various forms of karate. These philosophies and training regimes nearly turned karate to be a dance. The realistic application of techniques nearly got lost and a lot of them got exposed in cage fighting. What I mean is some never worked in the cage causing some people to make fun of karate. Kyokushin and Kudo karate has made karate very meaningful. Knowing a kata or some kihon and it's philosophies is not enough I'm afraid. It is about time the practitioners of the various forms start training like boxers otherwise they will not stand a chance against boxers who spend most of their time with their 'little techniques' on punching bags and pads and also applying them in their kumite. Otherwise the many philosophies, and knowledge will not help. This can be achieved if the various forms of karate unite. The absolute philosophy of thinking that one is superior than the other must stop.
