During the epic war of Ramayana in Treta Yuga, Ravana sought to gain Lord Shiva's favor through penance to ensure victory against Lord Rama. Impressed by his devotion, Lord Shiva manifested in the form of a Shiv-ling and instructed Ravana to install it in Lanka. However, Shiva imposed a condition that the Shiv-ling should not touch the ground during the journey. On the return trip, Ravana had to briefly entrust the Ling to a shepherd while he attended to nature's call. Seizing the opportunity, Shiva increased the Ling's weight, compelling the shepherd to place it on the ground. Realizing Shiva's ploy to prevent the Ling from reaching Lanka and thereby ensuring Rama's triumph, Ravana became furious. In a fit of rage, he pressed the Ling with his thumb, leaving an impression resembling a cow's ear (गौ-कर्ण). Thus, the place came to be known as Gola Gokaran Nath.
Gola Gokaran Nath lies at coordinates 28.08° N 80.47° E, nestled alongside the banks of the Sarayan River. Encircled by lush tropical forests, it stands as the second largest town within the Lakhimpur Kheri district. Notably, Gola hosts one of Asia's leading sugar mills, Bajaj Hindusthan Limited, situated in its northern region.
The inaugural plant was established at Gola Gokaran Nath in Lakhimpur Kheri district, situated within the fertile Terai region of Uttar Pradesh (UP), renowned for its abundance of sugarcane. Initially designed to process 400 tons of cane daily (TCD), its capacity progressively expanded, currently reaching 13,000 TCD. The distillery unit at this site commenced operations towards the end of World War II in 1944, primarily producing power alcohol as a petrol additive during a period of scarcity. Notably, it was the first unit to supply alcohol-blended petrol to the military.
Additionally, in 1972, another sugar plant with a crushing capacity of 1400 TCD was established at Palia Kalan, a prominent sugarcane hub situated approximately 70 kilometers (43 miles) from Gola Gokaran Nath.
