Mlorpe I seem to remember gold plated tungsten bars ending up in a countrie's treasury and had major financial institutes going nuts checking their bullion. I suspect for large gold deposits they now use one of the handheld xray analyzer like Cody has to test the gold without doing an invasive coring test.

Sebastian Mustermann- It does after it has been used. That's actually how companies like Kodak were able to stay afloat when everyone was buying digital cameras, is that they were able to recycle the silver compounds from the developer to be reused for film. Old black and white negatives still have silver content and color film negatives drop the silver out completely when going through the developer.

Benoit Soupart; Possible? Yes, but not with the standard techniques, like he showed here. Practical? No way! You would rather to CVD with a Tungsten precursor, like they used to do with integrated circuits. In fact, Cody should actually be able to do this with the vacuum system he currently has, and some Argon to flush the chamber!

I don't know if there is a method of plating pure tungsten but It is possible to co-deposit a mixture of Nickel, Tungsten and Boron. It is a good protective plating that contains about 40% tungsten. www.osti.gov/scitech/servlets/purl/72974

Interesting, been looking into replacements for electroplated chromium; best I could do so far was cobalt which is moderately good mechanically but not optically. I've been through Abner Brenner's "Electrodeposition of Alloys. Principles and Practice" but don't recall the ternary alloy W-Ni-B mentioned there. Of course, the paper linked doesn't go into details such as composition of the electrolyte and more importantly the brightener used. I've personally considered using simpler alloys such as W-Ni and W-Co which are not too difficult (in theory) to deposit.

You can electroplate things that are non conductive with a conductive ink applied. I think for example you could paint your finger with a carbonaceous compound and wrap a wire around and hook that in place of the fork / cube in this setup, and the current from a 12 volt battery would be much inclined to go from anode through solution through ink through wire and back to battery, but not through you.

First comment, your channel is fantastic. I have watched with great interest for many a year now. Excellent work! Second comment, I think the current density is a little on the high side. You can see that by all the H2 bubbles. This will disturb the plating out process, causing the coating to flake off. I manufacture radio frequency components that have to be silver and sometimes gold plated. I used a current density of 5 to 10 mA per square mm. For gold plate on tungsten, I would first plate Cu then Ag then Au. Not forgetting to buffer the solution with a little sodium carbonate. Once again, great work on your channel, keeping people interested interested in science!

Is it possible to plate other things in tungsten? If so would it be possible to maybe plate a knife with tungsten to ad corrosion resistance and possibly some added edge retention(likely for days/weeks to get a significant enough thickness)?
@stamasd8500
7 жыл бұрын
You can't really plate pure tungsten, but you can plate alloys of tungsten with other metals such as nickel and cobalt. They will add corrosion resistance, but at the thicknesses attainable (a few microns at best) forget about edge retention. And you can't simply make thicker layers by prolonging the deposition time because as they get thicker the deposits will become mechanically unsound and flake off.
@Storebrand_
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I figured the plating wouldn't be able to achieve a significant thickness especially since in this very video Cody mentions the gold flaking off at even a very low thicknesses.

Copper may actually have been better than nickel as gold tends to adhere better to it. Copper flashings (i.e. very thin layers of copper deposited under special conditions that make them adhere very strongly) are used under many other electrodeposited metals. Almost all nickel and chromium industrial coatings are applied over a flashing of copper.
@devent10n
6 жыл бұрын
Fwiw, the flaking was also probably influenced by the time between when the breaker broke and him continuing it in the Pyrex. It happens in our shop if we take too long turning parts.

sinter or Sintering is how they spell it on Wikipedia,
@stamasd8500
7 жыл бұрын
Pure tungsten is very hard and brittle, it's extremely hard to machine. Just imagine trying to turn a diamond on a regular lathe. That's why most objects made of tungsten are actually sintered, i.e. made from powdered tungsten mixed with a small amount of binder powder (nickel or cobalt for instance), compressed and heated. Under the sintering conditions the nickel/cobalt melts and traps the tungsten particles in a matrix. It's much cheaper to do it this way than by machining large blocks of tungsten. As for casting tungsten, forget it - what would you make the mold out of? :)

Cody, a cool idea you should try is to plate elements over and over in order or atomic number. so layers upon layers of elements that would be so cool to see all the layers of them
@TheOutZZ
6 жыл бұрын
Zusky Some elements react with each other, others will oxidize in the air or corrode in solution, chemicals react with the layers below the surface through tiny impurities... there are a lot of problems to get around.
