I need to invest in an acid testing kit for any additional gold I purchase. One time I bought a gold chain that was signified as 24k gold, and looked like 24k to an untrained eye. I brought it to a local jewelry store and had it tested, it turned out to be 22k gold. While a minor difference in value, it never hurts to be able to verify the gold's purity yourself. Edit: A food scale will suffice if you are like me who buys heavier gold jewelry.

Great advice on calculating out a commodity and helping understand a market. I like to bring cash when buying at pawn shops and especially with private sales. When I make my (lowest) offer, I lay down the cash in front of them and let them count it out. There is something psychological that takes place and more often than not, they accept my initial offer.

Very interesting! The current UK sovereign is essentially "rose gold" because it is 22 carat, and the silver content was dropped in (I think) 2013. Now it is gold and copper, giving it the "rose" glow and it is quite obvious when placed alongside an earlier sovereign.

@@NGRevenant I think the silver/copper ratio varied over the years and as long as some silver was present, the coin retained its "gold" appearance (more or less). The silver was finally removed around 2012/13, making the coin 11/12 gold and 1/12 copper.

Nice video on how to calculate gold value! Though most jewelry stores/designers mark up their prices so high because customers are not paying only for the gold, but the labor and expertise in turning gold material into jewelry. The better the designer, usually the better quality of craftmanship too, making it expensive.

Very useful video, BG! It's fun figuring out what your gold jewelry is worth! I went through this process recently with a small 9.5" gold chain I bought many years ago to extend the length of the chain for a pocket watch I used to carry. I have no idea what I paid for it, but it wasn't much. I was curious what it was worth. The Hallmark says "Italy" and "417" followed by an oval symbol with a line through it. Google quickly told me it was 10K. I weighed it and did the math, but I just rechecked it again today, and that little chain has a melt value of $115 now! Not that much, but it's nice to know, and apparently Italian gold jewelry carries a premium.

In my opinion nobody should be selling any form of gold or silver at or around spot price we all know that number is manipulated to the downside for decades! It would be interesting to make a video about value proposition.. meaning an average days labor in dollars compared to how long it would take one person to find gold or silver in the ground dig it up and refine it I think this will help people understand how and why gold and silver are so much more valuable then portrayed by spot price..

Well, since most gold is processed out of ore in the grams per ton and the efficiency of mining operations, it's a fact that gold is OVERPRICED. No gold production is done at a cost below the market price. Yes, a small amount is done above the market because of pre-sales and futures. Also, most is produced outside the US, so you'd have to use the labor rate of the producing country. We also can tell you're a gold bug and no facts on gold pricing is going to change your mind on anything.

Having worked in jewelry for many years, I know how to convert grams to ounces, and identify the purity of the gold to finally come up with the melt value of gold jewelry. Even knowing all of that, I still gladly bring my old stuff/scrap jewelry to a local guy who pays 80% of spot. Thats the best price I have found from a shop that gives instant cash and I believe thats fair. I just dont want to do the extra legwork online or mail-order to try to get that extra 15-20 %. Is that crazy? And I am NOT on that side of "stacking" in case of a "collapse". lol. Very nice video. Good information for people to know if they're thinking about selling gold jewelry. However, it's my experience that a pawn shop, coin shop, or jewelry store will not give you much more than 70% of melt. I hate to say it, but you will be sized up when you enter and you could be offered as little as 60% of melt. I've never heard of a store offering melt for jewelry. And yes, they will mark it up to what you would see in a jewelry store when buying. So yes, they do offer 50% off their retail price and still making a lot of money. Well done video...a great introductory course into selling and buying from a pawn shop.

I have a few 90% Swiss gold Helvetia coins that are .1867 of a Troy ounce. I picked those up because it's a great way to add cheap fractional gold sovereigns to your stack at a lower premium. Unfortunately I've heard that the sell back price for them is only about 90% of spot because I hear there less desirable and known. But I've never sold them before (and hope that I never have to) so I'll never really know for sure until I go to sell them. Great video 👍 happy Thanksgiving

Long time stacker here and I have precious metals in almost every form you can imagine, including 10 oz silver bars. I would suggest that the best type of silver to stack is 'junk' US 90% silver coins. Especially if you think you may need to barter with silver in an economic collapse, 'junk' silver is the most widely recognized type by the US public. If you tried to do a deal with a silver round or even a US Silver Eagle, most people wouldn't know what it was. Of course there are no "bad" forms of precious metals, but public recognition is one of many considerations to keep in mind.

Regarding retail silver bars -- I agree with bald guy money's preferred sentiment on silver bars -- though, I would add one further "dimension" to the BGM's suggestion of highly recognizable and serialized silver bars for consideration, which is -- producers who are LBMA-approved for "good-delivery" 1000 oz. silver bars, as an additional layer of acceptance. Producers making 10 oz, kilo, and 100 oz. silver bars that are recognized by the LBMA for their 1000 oz bars, include, RCM, JBR recovery, Perth Mint, and Valcambi, among others. The LBMA has a listing of good delivery producers on their website and one can even download a copy of the good-delivery certificate for a specific producer from the LBMA website.

Mene is an excellent choice for gold jewelry. They sell only 24k at the current gold price (plus a fee) and buy back their wares!

Strange - KZitem doesn't allow me to see some comments sometimes. I want to believe it's a bug.

Unfortunately gold jewelry is not purchased by the gram, it is purchased by the grain or by the pennyweight. Jewellers use the pennyweight in calculating the amount and cost of precious metals used in fabricating or casting jewellery. Similarly, dentists and dental labs still use the pennyweight as the measure of precious metals in dental restorations.

I have only ever bought gold jewelry by the gram. Scales that weigh jewelry in grams are available for less than $10 on Amazon.

He buys less than 22 carat purity that's probably why they charge him by the gram maybe😂

Workmanship fees depending on the design, the more ornamented the design, the higher the workmanship fees. 😊

I get this question a lot - sadly most buyers will not pay you for them. They will count the weight vs the gold.
