The restaurant we visited for this photo shoot is Katoya, which specializes in ankatsu-don, a bowl of rice topped with a fried pork cutlet and egg. While a typical katsudon consists of a pork cutlet topped with an egg, this restaurant's dish is a katsudon topped with an anko (red bean paste) made from dashi (Japanese soup stock) and soy sauce, with the egg dissolved in the batter. The dish is delicious, carefully prepared without adding unnecessary ingredients, and the cheerful and energetic owner is well -loved by the locals. The owner also wants to live up to the love the locals have for her, and she prepares her dishes every day with the people who eat them in mind.
At the time of the photo shoot, there were not many people around the station, and I wondered if there would be few customers today... but my fears were unfounded. Before noon, locals, tourists, bikers, and other visitors arrived one after another, filling the restaurant to capacity...so popular was the restaurant that there was even a wait outside.
In fact, the restaurant has been introduced on many TV programs, and it is said that customers come from all over Japan.
