@GolfQuestChannel
2 жыл бұрын
From what I have read / watched, the garmin r10 is a very powerful, portable, and obviously cost effective unit. If you are going to the range a lot this would seem like a great idea. However, I think for an indoor setup I wouldn't go this route. It is reported to be not as accurate inside and for myself, I wouldn't have the distance required to place the unit behind the ball. Skytrak allows for more compact sim setups. If you have left handed and right handed golfers playing, Skytrak is not ideal as it needs to be moved to accommodate which player (lefty or righty) is hitting. Best of luck with your Sim build - so much fun!

You can go cheaper in a few areas such as - not getting an apple tv to project wirelessly, getting a cheaper mat to start (but could result in injury if you play a ton), buying a used iPad etc. You can get something other than a Skytrak but Optishot isn't really a true golf simulator it's more of a video game and I don't think it will help you get better.

$7k is way too much for something like what you have especially without a projector
@GolfQuestChannel
7 ай бұрын
Three years in and I think it was worth every penny. Most of that cost is a new skytrak (at the time) the mat and a new iPad). All essential to the sim. You can cheap out on the mat but I wouldn’t. There are videos out there showing you the moon for 5k but they are ridiculous. They realistically cost more than 50k but they say “I already owned the projector, the laptop, screen etc“. No doubt you can go cheaper by buying used stuff though. These are also CND dollar prices if you are viewing from the US. Best of luck.

ol I know - others have said this too and I recognize that but "cheap" is somewhat relative. When I first started I never thought I could install a real simulator for even close to that. I thought it would cost 15 - 20k at a bare minimum (and many sweet setups cost more than that). So this wasn't an easy purchase for me either - and I went back and forth before pulling the trigger, but it was much more doable than I had ever thought before.

Do you think it is possible to store the Fiberbuilt Mat vertically up against the wall when not in use? I want a garage setup that I can break down when I want to park the cars, the Spornia net seems to break down and store relatively easily it's the mat that I'm not sure about. Fiberbuilt's website says this mat is ~150lbs, which while heavy, suggests that it's rigid enough to tip up against the wall without issue. True?

I think you can get the unit for between 700-1000 CND and if you can install it yourself terrific. If not, you are still looking at the install cost and the cost of extending your current track. Finally, you need either an iPad or a computer / laptop to run the skytrak software (and then any other simulator software you might want to add - currently I use e6 connect to play courses). You inspired me and I ordered stuff to get this going. I live in India, so I need to source all this from abroad. Watching this video for the second time. My wife and I are also road cyclists and we have a bike and gym room with about 9 bikes. Planning to add a sim there. It's a 26*14 foot room so space seems to be enough. Planning for the Garmin R10 though not the skytrak. Few questions if you don't mind. 1. That stiff ring all around the black screen - any possibility of a ball ricocheting of that back to you? 2. If I set this up indoors where I have no pegs to hold it down, what holds it in place 3. Is it worth buying the side extensions? And, how have you fixed that one side side extension? 4. What height would you need if you wanted to swing a driver?

Glad to hear you are building a Sim - lots of fun ahead. Here are the answers to your questions: 1. I have hit the inside back tent-like pole with a ball before and it has not come back to hit me but to be fair I don't do that very often. Has only happened on the dreaded shank. 2. Nothing is holding my Spornia Net down either. It just sits there. Now, I do have the left side tied off to the wall just to help keep it perfectly straight (vertically) but it's not absolutely necessary. 3. I don't think I have ever actually hit the side extensions. I bought those more for my son in case he really missed. I don't think I would buy them again but maybe one day I will be glad I have it. It is just fixed to the bottom of my garage with a screw into the side wall. 4. Height with the driver depends on how tall you are. I have approximately 9.5 feet of height in my garage and that's all the room I need. Hope this helps and have fun with the build!

Thank you. I heat with two ceramic heaters. My garage is not insulated (other than the walls not sharing an interior wall with the house that is) but my garage door is a metal insulated door which helps as well. So I don't lose heat instantly when I heat. The impact is loud with the driver - can definitely hear it in the house but it's not horrible. There are other golf mats that are more portable. However, if you play a lot you might start to feel it in your joints and also they won't last as long. The Fiberbuilt definitely is not portable though lol. That thing is a beast. As for putting turf I don't know and I don't want to mislead you. Thanks for checking out the channel and best of luck with your projects!

@GolfQuestChannel

Thank you! So, I didn't mention this in the video but I also had a new garage door installed when I had the opener put in. The cost of the new door, opener, extended track and installation was 3K CND. It was all included in the quote so I'm not sure how much just the opener and track would be but I would assume more than half of that cost was the door itself. Hope this helps.

Paying almost 7K is not exactly what one would call low budget. That being said..........how high is the ceiling in the garage? You didn't mention that but most houses usually have 8 foot ceilings throughout the house, including the garage. Secondly, and one I suspect most watching would want to know......WHERE did you get the Kramer pic? hahahaha......
@GolfQuestChannel

Ceiling in garage is 9.5 feet. Yes, “low budget” is relative, but compared to the budget a lot of sim builds require this is definitely cheaper and easier on the bank. The Kramer was purchased many moons ago at some art print store in a mall. I saw it and couldn’t look away lol. Thanks for checking out the channel 👍🏻.

Great video and advice. One question: does your garage have a slope? Wondering if that would affect numbers on the skytrack or if it would cause bad habits to constantly be practicing on a downhill or uphill lie.
@GolfQuestChannel

I do have a slight slope yes but it doesn't seem to affect anything at all. I just put my skytrak flat on the extra portion of the Fiberbuilt mat (highly recommend that mat and I have no affiliate to them). It's pricey but worth it. The only thing I really find affects misreads is the background. I put my green screen behind me and that really helps.

If you scroll through the comments you will see this mentioned quite a few times. It's a fair comment. When I first got started (a few years ago now) I didn't think it was possible to do a fully functioning simulator for under 10k. The launch monitors I knew about were 12-20 k just for the launch monitor. So I always thought it would be basically impossible. So, I hear you when you question "cheap" but for me (relatively speaking that is) it was quite cheap. You can even go cheaper of course if you are willing to look for a lot of this stuff used. My buddy is great at that and has saved a ton.

So a couple if things: 1. You wouldn't want a fiberbuilt mat if you want to move things quickly. It is heavy and doesn't budge. 2. The Spornia net is designed to take up and down quickly but I have never taken it down so I can't speak to that other than what is on their website. I may have asked you this before, but my brain can't remember. I'm assuming that the studs are 2x4 basically giving you 4 inches of depth to mount the jackshaft opener in the wall. Doesn't look like much clearance between the wall mount and the rails either. What's the depth on the Liftmaster you have there? I believe you have an 8500?

I measure the base of the net (at it's widest point) at 81 inches (so just under 7 feet). The fiberbuilt, when you include the edging of the base is just over 7 feet. Plus, in the video, I have the mat slightly offset in order to align the hitting strip with the centre of the net. Hope that helps.

@@GolfQuestChannel I'm very interested in trying a similar setup. Do you think I can squeeze it into a 14' 5" x 9' 6" porch? Only place with high enough ceilings.
@GolfQuestChannel
2 жыл бұрын
@@brianpinkley It will be tight for hitting driver / woods with that space. I'm pretty sure the 9'6" width is okay if you put the mat right against the edge of the porch (the side you are facing). You might even get away with the length but I think it will be iffy - will also depend how tall / long your arms are. There are a couple other options for nets that aren't quite as deep as the spornia such as the Net Return Pro but I think they are more expensive, and I can't speak to the "bounce back" effect they have on the ball so you would want to research that a bit if you wanted to go that way. But a net like that might save you the space you need in order to swing the driver confidently. Hope this helps.

I you get one of the big brands (Taylor-Made, Cobra, Callaway etc.) you can't really go wrong with a used set. It will be better than any starter no-name set you will get. When it does hit the hood the ball can come back quickly so you have to be ready to dance when you pull out the 60º lol.
