I once had a Kurdish, communist friend at college who had almost died in a Turkish prison for arguing politics with guns. He told me that Jack London was his favourite author. I did not share his politics or taste in literature & I recall being bemused by his choice. I could only think of Call of the Wild & The Sea Wolf & thought of him as no more than an adventure writer. Now I see an uncompromising political manifesto in this tale & think of him differently. Fascinating stuff. Tnx. Ash

Why was this never a movie? This story should be taught as a class; it's methods debated, revised and improved; with global happiness our primary goal. But instead of Percival Stultz, we might revere Mr London as a man with an imperfect vision that inspired it (and also Plato, whose ideas I suspect inspired Jack's). He was so much more than the author of "Call of the Wild". And to the skeptics who will say this can never be: GET OUT OF OUR WAY AND WE'LL SEE! 😄😆😃 Energon = People Power = Pure Democracy?

Who is this guy Tom Lawson that London refers to in 13:49?

Probably is Thomas W Lawson who was a "captain of industry" type in the early 20th century

I can imagine that they would behave much better if DEATH was looking over their shoulders at every moment... and this story would be a "start" in the right direction...

+mrninesixfive Makes sense given the zeitgeist of the time and his position in it; In The Scarlet Death, he referred to the Aryan Race several times

Moronic and silly; stupid, communistic; but most of all maximally boring, though narrated well.
