Jim Nabors said himself in an interview about the show that he and Frank Sutton were marching in formation with real Marines on the opening, many of whom were sent off to fight and die in Vietnam. I was never clear on what message they were trying to send with this scene. Were they trying to make militarism "Hippy Friendly" or the other way around? This was the closest the show ever came to acknowledging the plight of our military at the time. Maybe the point they were trying to stress was to blame the system and the hole it dug itself, not to blame all the young, and mostly underprivileged lives that were wasted on its missteps. Wars are waged at the expense of the people who give the most and receive the least.

This is probably the closest to Vietnam as the show could get. It made no direct reference to the war at all. Could you imagine if this were to have happened today, that is the Vietnam war. How would it have played out if it were now, instead of then? The irony is this is a peaceful scene in a television series starring an actor who represented an individual who was far off in another country risking his very life for a cause! It divided the entire nation, and the irony of this is it's still the same today. The country is still pretty much divided. I think war is like life it's self. It is way too complicated to understand for the human mind. You do not know anything about it, until you have participated in it. Funny, but war is too complicated for mankind, but not an individual man.
